2/27/18What turned me to this book? I’m sure many of your readers including yourself could relate to this but I’m on an endless pursuit to better myself. To your point, with ADHD we’re either on one end of the spectrum or the other, we live on the extremes and I wanted to make sure I was on the right side. School is where I struggled the most with the typical symptoms so I decided to poke around - I always knew I was wired differently. I was diagnosed just before getting into college. At any rate, after I started my initial dosage (Dexedrine) 6-8 months in, I nearly failed all my classes. I also lost all my creativity. My sister remarked I was zombie-like and lost my personality. So, I turned my cheek to the entire concept and began doing my own experimentation to improve myself. In college, even though I didn’t get the best grades, I had a strong entrepreneurial drive starting from elementary school. Junior year college, I co-founded my own business with a friend. That business was in the home loans space (yeah, I know). Obviously it didn’t last too long but luckily I was smart enough hedge with college. The experience gained from this business combined with my background in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Economics landed me a job on a trading desk as a Desk Strat (Quant). In this industry, it was a well known thing: If you didn’t have ADHD, you’re toast! All top performers had the symptoms and they were extremely sought after. Fast forward to now, I lead a Data Science team in Tech. During the journey of self-improvement, disciplining myself, etc. I got wind of Cal Newport’s series. I’ve been a huge advocate of his work since: Read 3 of his books, took one of his courses, read countless blog posts, and participated in one of his experiments thus far. That’s when I first heard about your ability to dial-in on airplanes (read this about 2-3 years ago). Recently, I read Ray Dalio’s new book : Principles. He talks about the benefits of understanding your own brain better and repeatedly emphasized "people are wired very differently," and the creative type need the most discipline. So in efforts to understand my strengths and weakness, I turned back to ADHD. (By the way, Ray’s definition of a “Shaper” is very similar to the strengths you described on pg.13) As I was browsing through books ADHD, I came across quite a few but the two I bought was yours and Driven to Distraction. On Faster, the reviews were solid and I recognized your name and it was recent.Things I could relate to.. The high you described after/during presentations, I experience a similar feeling - this past friday actually gave one to the entire organization. (I also happen to be good at presentations) I actually wrote this shortly after it: It's an incredible rush, from the nerves leading up to it and to afterwards when everyone's high fiving you and giving "Good job!" handshakes, asking tons of questions... it's absolutely riveting. It’s the same feeling I get from extreme sports and this high last for hours. I’ve been diagnosed about three separate times with ADHD. Though, I do well at my job, I’ve had repeatedly difficulty with coworkers and bosses (not all just 2). I’ve repeatedly been deemed talented but difficult / unmanageable and it’s not my intention to be difficult, but it’s my unique ways which got me into the “talented” category to begin with. Similar what you mentioned on pg 39. I live in Manhattan as well! So envisioning your stories were pretty easy. The Squirrel references for key insights.. Firstly brilliant analogy. My friends joke about how my dog and I have similar personalities but most say I'm very animated and cartoon character-like which bodes well for presentations, now that I think of it.What distinguishes this book from others.. Thought leadership and advice material is often provided as a disparate set of facts. You do a great job of connecting these into a greater, overarching concept.Which insights did I extract?- Early rises (5a) but I go straight to work (90 mins) - meditate - gym - office I can’t begin to tell you how much this has positively impacted my life. My issue was waking up and falling asleep before midnight. The WiFi light bulbs coupled with the REM Alarm app on my phone help SO MUCH! This is something I’ve been battling for practically my entire life. As for falling asleep my lights are triggered to dim into this Amber tone by 9pm. It automagically makes me sleepy.- EWR instead of JFK Though, I’m sure it wasn’t your intention by mentioning which airport you frequented but it made me question why I leave from JFK so often. Newark is much less crowded. Is that why you prefer it? Seems to be nearly the same commute time.- Decluttering I know you’re a major (pg 139) proponent of outsourcing, however I feel it comes with some bias of being a Manhattanite. The services industry is huge out here. I’ve also found some satisfaction in doing things myself. For example, If I want to take my mind off something stressful, cleaning or doing something else engaging helps me disconnect. But when I get my new job (hopefully soon) I’ll give this a shot. For now, I’ve formed this into a Sunday habit.- Hot buttons After you brought this up, this helped me identify specifically what about my boss drives me up the wall.- Sporadic Burst Exercises Has been a proven successful so far - an instant boost.- Commitment to researching digital productivity hacks So far I’ve mined a bunch of good stuff from your book but as the world evolves, I need to start a habit of it.- Double up on outdoor activities Couldn’t agree more with this. Even in the frigid winters here in NYC, I’ll find enough layers to go running along the Hudson on the way to Chelsea Piers every morning.Was advice tailored to people with ADHD? Yes, I would definitely say so. Certainly on decluttering and exercise. I know health & organization/planning is emphasized in most material on productivity, however I think this impacts people ADHD doubly, I can attest from my own experience. Anders Ericsson, in his book Peak mentions, likens mastering a craft to summiting a mountain: You could either spend a while trying to figure out the path to the top or have a Sherpa show you the way. You sir, are the ADHD Sherpa.Trivial to insightful ratio? I was very compelled to write all this to you so I definitely found it much more on the insightful side. Did it blow me away? No (because I read so many self-help books already) , but close enough. What I liked most was how well I could relate to you, that’s a key distinction from any other book I’ve read. One of my favorite authors Mark Manson puts it this way: Since this book is comprehensive, you'll find information that's either trivial or insightful. If it's insightful great! if it's trivial, use this as reaffirmation. I think of it kind of doing a math problem and looking at the solutions set just to instill confidence on your approach. I found this often to be the case, for example, I wasn’t sure about sporadically working out throughout the day. I had tried it once when I was unemployed, even though it was effective stopped because I got a job and it’s awkward to seek out remote areas of a building to do burst workouts. But your emphasis on it re-ensured, it was worth the cost.How fast did I read it relatively speaking?I read it faster than any self-improvement book I own and I have at least ~20.- Stuff I find helpful in my own routine- Meditation Vipassana- Exercise, leaning a bit more on the cardio end- Preparation & Planning at the hour-level- Routines & Habits- Nearly a paleolithic diet- Reading & Writing- Timer cube for time deterministic tasks like cleaningMy favorite part of the book Often times being as different could lead to poor treatment and/or being ostracized. He reminds us on how to deal with such behavior: At the end of the day you can't control other people's actions, but you can only control your own and you should have the courage to be yourself despite what others think.

It's unreal how similar our brains work, the many stories of his everyday life scenarios and how he has dealt with them. Truly on the same page. When this book was announced, I snapped it up. Eager to learn how to use my "superpower", the life hacks he outlines are simple and easy to implement. I'm hoping to change my life and truly live my life faster than normal!I can't sit still long enough to read a book, this one has my attention and I cannot put it down.Squirrel!!!!!Putting words, experience, rules, and sense to what I have dealt with over my lifetime, I wish I would have found this sooner. If you, your spouse, children or family members have ADD/ADHD, you will learn what they cannot tell you about how their brains work.Buy this book and listen to what Peter is telling you regardless if you have ADD or not. Reading "Faster Than Normal" is like having a really long conversation with a good friend. A friend who really "gets you" and values your challenges as what makes you unique.Since being diagnosed with ADHD as a grad student in 1995, I have read A LOT of books on ADHD. What puts this title at the top of my "must-read" books are the practical tools Shankman suggests as well as the necessary reframing that needs to happen in order to leverage my brain's differences and make them work for me rather than against me.Shankman writes from his own personal expeerience and with his disarming style of self-deprecation. He's been in the same trenches and knows how hard one must work to be successful with ADHD. Not in spite of it, but because of it.

I stumbled across a Forbes interview of Peter Shankman last week. I've never purchased a book this fast in my life. I proceeded to download the entire backlog of his podcast and then went back to finish the article because I had 9 tabs open in Chrome and just got thoroughly sidetracked. Yep.Peter is fun to read, and it's so refreshing to approach my ADD as a superpower to be channeled, not a problem to be managed. Sure, most of us can't skydive and chill or fly to Tokyo just to write a book *cue eye roll* but we definitely all develop weird coping mechanisms.I didn't read the book so much for the hacks. Books are my source of dopamine, and I read more self-help and business books than is healthy (although I'm a writer and editor, too, like Jennifer Harshman on his FTN podcast). I know the tricks and the strategies, but I really enjoyed reading his book and listening to his podcast. It's just nice to know I'm not alone and that AD(H)D looks different on everyone.Highly recommended for anyone who's ever been overwhelmed by a calendar.

I had tried a Keto Diet once before and had to quit because I just felt too limited with what I could eat. I pretty much got sick of eating the same basic things every single day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That being said, I'm not a salad person, so the Keto Diet still appealed to me because I can eat meat. I grabbed author Emma Katie's new recipe book when I was ready to try again and it has been an entirely different experience. I love the variety and quality of the recipes here, that make it so easy to stay on this diet. I cooked so many different kinds of chicken, steak, snacks, and even some slow cooker recipes. Definitely recommend this one if you want to use the Keto Diet to lose weight.

It has some good recipes. There are no pictures and I would have preferred calories, carb, fat, and protein breakdown.

It's really hard to ensure a successful keto diet without knowledge of the nutritional information within each recipe. The ebook presents some interesting although very brief recipes. It would be largely improved with nutritional information and perhaps a few images of the recipes.

I got this "cookbook" months ago and after my first glance I ended up throwing it on a shelf and forgetting about it. The rest of the 1 star reviews sum it up: poorly written, cut and paste look, no reference picture to go with recipe, and who cares about nutritional values by that point... all I can say is that it is in the garbage now where it belongs. I got had for $15. Whatever.

Too many type-Os. Wish there were Nutrition Information listed for each recipe. There is none.

Not 100% keto. Do your homework!

Call me mainstream but my new year's resolution for 2017 is to eat healthier and get fitter. My overall goal is to get a flatter figure but given the fact that I'm pretty overweight, I'm setting easy goals so that I don't get discouraged. Anyway, I do follow a bunch of fitness gurus on YouTube and one of them suggested Keto diet and recommended this gem.Over the last four days, I've stuck to the Keto recipes that I found in this cookbook. The recipes are fairly simple, straight to the point and delicious. I made Beef Zucchini Stew for my folks the other day and they absolutely loved it. Although, as per the recipe, the cauliflower florets in the chicken steak recipe needs to be cooked for 5 minutes but, that really depends on the size of the florets so start checking after 3 minutes to make sure they're not overcooked.Emma, your recipes are spectacular and I cannot thank you enough for this hell of an awesome cookbook.

Originally bought this on kindle, but I enjoyed the recipes so much, I wanted a hard copy that I could use daily in my kitchen as we are progressing through the ketogenic diet. It is a well written cookbook, simple instructions. I love it!

Excellent snorkeling and diving guide (See my other review of the book Snorkeling the Florida Keys ). It has maps, detailed information about the snorkeling sites, information about history, geography, climate, lots of color pictures and maps. Overall, a great book by Dr. Harrigan, a Marine Biologist. The only problem is the last published edition was in 2006. I doubt the snorkeling/diving sites have changed very much, but the other information may have. Dr. Harrigan: Please revise your book !!

Diving and Snorkeling Florida Keys is a must for anyone diving the keys off a boat. Also a good guide to the few sites reachable from the beach or by sit on top kayak. Match this up with the Diving Guide To Underwater Florida and a Florida Keys fishing chart sold by most marinas and youl'll be ready to get wet.

A lot of color pixs and good infoYou could actually use a lot of the info and maps when scuba diving at these locations

This is a great book, and I take it along every time I go diving in the Keys (about once or twice a month). All of the popular dive sites are featured in this book, and there are a lot of pictures that truly represent the diving in the area. I have found the information to be highly accurate when describing the sites, though somewhat vague at times. This book is small in size, so I can even zip it up inside my log book so it stay dry.

This guide is helpful, but could be more informative. We will be diving from our own boat, and could use more information about the dives themselves, rather than the history of the site or wreck. The guide should also have GPS coordinates, description of the moorings, etc.

This book is very informative, with good pictures and descriptions of the most popular dive spots in the area of the Florida Keys

I received the book as an advanced reader copy and chose of my own accord to review. My opinions in this book review are my own. I wasn't sure what I was expecting, (and I'm not even quite halfway through), but it's been far and above what I expected. So much to chew on, process. It's not a book to rush through, not one to superficially glaze over, but one to digest, slowly take in, even though it could be considered an "easy read." I read and reread the same pages even. I don't do this with most books. I'm typically a fast reader and can devour a book in a day or two. But this? Nope. #savoringeachword This is one book I'll definitely be re-reading, in fact, with highlighter in hand. I rarely read books twice, but reading it through the first time without highlighting helps me to just digest the truth of what Sheila pours out, that it's okay not to be okay, to question and to wonder, to struggle and to wrestle with hard things. Re-reading then allows me to go through it a second time and highlight the "key" sentences that speak to right where I'm at now. Definitely worth TWO reads!

I found that I could easily relate to the authors struggles and found it helpful how she directs you to God in the difficult times with no condemnation. I loved the questions at the end of the chapters to help make personal and cement what I had learnt in each chapter. If you need encouragement to keep moving forward (and who doesn't?) this book will be helpful.

The situation i have been facing just this last week, taking compassionate leave at work, i downloaded this book to read on the flight. Talk about meeting you where you are at. Its a womans message, but as with alot of books that have touched me lately, its a human message. Men and woman arent that much different when it comes to all this stuff, men can just do the hard bravado thing better, but underneth its the same core issues. I can go onto tomorrow, even if im not ok, because it truly is ok not to be ok.

Reading through Shiela's book has been challenging for me because she asks hard questions, but they're GOOD hard questions. She doesn't hold back. In one chapter, she brings to light the way we approach God after disappointments and heartbreak. As I read this chapter, I thought, 'This is me, afraid to ask God for big things because I have felt disappointed in the past.' I like that each chapter ends with tools for further consideration, guiding me in how to apply what I gleaned in each chapter.

A long-time fan of Sheila Walsh, I think It's Okay Not to Be Okay may be her best book yet. Her candid stories range from heartfelt to entertaining and through it all, Sheila invites into to heart and life as she shares Biblical truth and wisdom. This is the sort of book that causes one to reflect, cry and laugh. It has reassured me of truths I need to remember in the midst of the hard of life and has encouraged my heart. Put this book on your list if you're struggling with feeling not-enough, overlooked, or afraid. You'll be glad you did!

I just finished Sheila’s new book “It’s OKAY Not to be OKAY,” and I have both laughed and cried at her gut-honest stories. The book gets high scores from me: entertaining (check); insightful (check); and faith building (check). Most of all, it caused me to pause, take a look at myself, and know there is hope for the best and the worst of us. I am one who underlines key statements as I read, and there are actually pages where I underlined the entire page. As a teacher in women’s ministry, I could teach a full lesson from every 2 to 3 pages! The profound statements are numerous, and I am in awe at the wisdom and graciousness with which Sheila imparts both her struggles and her victories to her readers. I’ve read many of Sheila’s books, and once again, she did not disappoint her audience. This is a must read for every person who struggles with being OKAY with God and OKAY with yourself. My hat is off to Sheila!

Great book that reminds us that even in the middle of our mess God has a purpose for us. We all have our days, sometimes moments when we aren't ok, but through those times we know God is with us. Sheila shares some of her experiences in this very same area. She helped me understand that we are not alone. We shouldn't feel guilty when we don't feel okay because it doesn't mean we did anything wrong. Life is hard and we all have struggles, just know God will always walk with us during these times.

A lot of really good straight down the line help from a very mature perspective that is very helpful. Best taken in small chunks and mulled over. it doesn't hurt that the audio book has Sheila's awesome Scottish accent as she reads her own work. Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you are after a ministry book, or if you are sitting on the fence thinking about it. It's really very good! If you struggle with painful emotional hurt, suicide in the family or depression, or youre an introvert with various other difficulties, Sheila and the Holy Spirit really have something to say.

As a former student of Dr. Lyons, he did not disappoint in his most recent work on Ezekiel. Lyons' deep love for both the prophets and textual analysis/comparison are unavoidably contagious to the reader. The work itself surpasses the mere "introduction" as it is described by helping the reader to get a deeper understanding of the context of the book of Ezekiel (even dabbling into the psychological and anthropological relevance to the exiles themselves). Lyons helps the reader see the distinction between the various target audiences for the book, going from its original recipients of the sign-acts themselves, to the written text we find in our Bibles today. Lyons also demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of the scholarship on Ezekiel by juxtaposing various interpretations of key themes and passages that are not widely agreed upon and exposing the stances that are most likely accurate from a textual standpoint. Overall, I highly recommend this book and guarantee that you will both learn and laugh throughout the pages.

Lyons has produced a readable introduction to Ezekiel that accomplishes being thorough and clear. It would be great for the Seminary level or even advanced undergraduate students. About the Author

Growing up in a small town in rural Washington State, Jeff Stookey enjoyed writing stories. He studied literature, history, and cinema at Occidental College, and then got a BFA in Theater from Fort Wright College. In his 40s he retrained in the medical field and worked for many years with pathologists, trauma surgeons, and emergency room reports. I really enjoy Jeff’s writing, his first person POV is tops, bar none. The reading is so smooth, you are transported to the time and place in the book without any effort on your part.Lovely scene-setting, accompanied by lively action and dynamic dialogue, will leave you wanting more at the end of the book and series.The finale of “Medicine for the Blues” series, “Dangerous Medicine” gets the top score of 5 stars!

What a huge accomplishment this is. Finished the trilogy this morning. Enjoyed the characters and the meticulously researched evocation of those times. Wish they were really in the past. The epilogue was very welcome and the author's notes showed the historian and journalist in the author. Excellent work. Thank you.

If you like a good mystery this book is for you. This book continues the journey of Jordan and Ellie, both of whom are detectives on the police force and just returned from a brief honeymoon. While this is book 8 in the series it is written that it can be a standalone as well. The beauty of the series is that you get to follow the wild things that happen to these two lovable characters. This book is not only a wonderful mystery, it's lead characters are all strong women and who doesn't like a good mystery with strong women and a little love interest on the side. While there are many twists and turns in this mystery as there are in all mysteries,what makes this one a bit different is that there's two unbelievably strange twist that was quite unexpected , and how are heroines deal with this out of the blue twist is a fantastic addition to a good mystery.I enjoyed this book and know you will too if you like strong women in your stories.

Upon reading the beginning of the first chapter, I recall reading it in the previous book and thinking that this was going to be either a good thing or a bad thing. I won’t tell you which it is, only that you will enjoy finding out. I like how Winkes takes her characters further in each book. Jordan seems to evolve more in her personal life, where Ellie’s character takes off more in her career. Each of the characters are developed further and give greater depth to the story. I have totally enjoyed the Carpenter and Harding series…each story builds on the lives of each of the characters and offers a unique mystery to be solved. So what’s not to like. Check it out, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy them all.

This installment of Ellie & Jordan's story is another good mystery. The ladies are trying to figure out married life as well as solve another crime spree! Throw in a family surprise and this book will keep you reading until The End! I enjoy Barbara's storytelling, it just gets better and better with each installment! Now I have to wait again for Ellie and Jordan's next appearance.
