Ray Bradbury is my favorite writer of all-time. Dandelion Wine is the tale of a small-town summer in 1928, told through the eyes of the colorful characters who inhabit it. There is a boy and his brother, awakening to consciousness of the enormous scope of being alive. No emotion is spared: joy and terror, tragedy and hope, all wrapped up in prose that is so beautiful it hurts.When I first started reading, this book confused me. It lacks the narrative arc that is so common in novels, and presents more like a series of vignettes with no obvious connection. It's also not science fiction, which is disconcerting if you are used to Bradbury's fantastical worlds. No, this is simply a story about summer, the mundanities of life transformed into something magical.It took me a few chapters to understand this. I persisted reading only because Bradbury is such a good writer be can make anything interesting, even when nothing is happening. But about a third of the way through, this book got its hooks in me and never let go. As it reaches its conclusion it becomes more than the sum of its parts and you see the thematic unity. It's a story about treasuring life in the face of mortality.Any writer striving for improvement should read this book, if you can bear the shame of knowing your greatest efforts will never compare.

That would take an entire page! Absolutely one of my favorite reads. Now reading it again with my adult grandson (who lives in Europe)....on very long distance calls of over 2 hours.....we read paragraphs back and forth...relate our own "Dandelion WIne" summers. Now we're writing our experiences out and placing the pages between the pages that "take us back"....he is so taken by the story ...he has to continually stop reading because his own memory kicks in....as does mine....I return to the "Blueberry Summers" of my youth....and find the time not so long past.

Surprising to me, few mentioned the one of his works that meant so much to me and affected my life so deeply. While he was most known to the general public for his science fiction, I found his mostly autobiographical novel Dandelion Wine to be the most impactful. At the same time it best illustrated Bradburyâ€™s incredible command of the language, his ability to stir the imagination, and the way in which he could open windows on life.I couldnâ€™t count the number of times I would reread a single sentence and become overwhelmed with admiration and envy at how he used words to create images in the mindâ€™s eye. All this was particularly on display in Dandelion Wine and its sequel, Farewell Summer. For Bradbury, it couldnâ€™t be just water. â€œNothing else would do but the pure waters which had been summoned from the lakes far away and the sweet fields of grassy dew on early morning, lifted to the open sky, carried in laundered clusters nine hundred miles, brushed with wind, electrified with high voltage, and condensed upon cool air. This water, falling, raining, gathered yet more of the heavens in its crystals. Taking something of the east wind and the west wind and the north wind and the south, the water made rain and the rain, within this hour of rituals, would be well on its way to wine.â€Essentially, Dandelion Wine is the story of a summer in the life of a twelve year old boy as he comes to understand what it means to be alive. There is horror, love, comedy, wonder, nostalgia, and human relations. Bradbury could find unique ways to describe them all.I first read Dandelion Wine in 1957 when I wasnâ€™t much older than Douglas Spaulding, the central character. It helped me put life in perspective as I was leaving high school. I read it the second time in the early â€˜80s when I introduced my daughter to it. Kelly and I sat on our front porch swing one warm summer evening and I read aloud to her the story of Bill Forrester and Helen Loomis. It was all I could do to finish it and when I did we both had tears streaming down our cheeks. Such was the power of imagination and Bradburyâ€™s ability to stroke it to life using just words.I read it the third time in preparation for reading the sequel, Farewell Summer, written 55 years after Dandelion Wine. Like a fine wine, it had only gotten better with age. Appropriately, Farewell Summer was given to me by Kelly and I read it on summerâ€™s eve 2012. It was the perfect beginning for yet another summer.In both books the ravine in Green Town, Illinois, based on Waukegan, Illinois where Bradbury grew up was a central feature. I couldnâ€™t resist going to Googlearth to see if the ravine was real. It was. And, it is still there even after Waukegan had changed from a small town to a satellite of Chicago. I was pleased to simply find I could locate it. But when I zoomed in and highlighted the little tree symbol I found the ravine is now Ray Bradbury Park. Perfect!Dan WintersJune 29, 2012

I was unsure if I liked this book, but after a while I started to like it and then I loved it. I could "feel" myself living in 1928 and the simpler life than we have in 2017. Children played outside and adults sat on porches and talked to their neighbors. And there is a lot of insight into things...like being a lonely old man with a lot of memories that the young boy called The Time Machine because of his stories. I was sorry to finish it.

These have the most imaginative designs I've been able to find. I've purchased other brands are these are much more imaginative, unique, and fun, whimsical. Highly recommend!

My husband and I have started using Adult Coloring Books as a way to de-stress. I know that many crafts use the same part of the brain that one uses in meditation, so I wasn't surprised to read that many other adults were turning to coloring. I have bought several different types of books and I find that I like a lot of the ones by Creative Haven/Dover. I have found that my non-alcohol based markers and my gel pens all leak through this brand of book, so I am sure to place paper between the pages to keep the pages behind fresh and clean. I've found that freezer paper works really well for this purpose.The pages of the book are single-sided and are perforated at the bound edge so you can remove the page to color or to frame afterwards. The pages are a bright white and have a decent pound weight - they are not flimsy.This is the second Creative Haven book by Marjorie Sarnat (her first has been one of my favorite - Cats.) This book of Owls is now tied for for my top honors. There are 31 images to color (if you don't include the small faceplate on the title page.) The images have a wide range, including: an owl sitting on a wildly decorated crescent moon, an owl with butterflies, a "smart" owl amongst his/her books, owls on a wooden rocking horse, pirate owls, fairy tale owl, totem pole owls, steampunk owl, the owl and the pussycat (yes, cat included!) and many, many more.These illustrations are so lovely, I plan to do each and every one of them. I love that the Ms. Sarnat has used such wild colors in her artwork - I plan to color these with just that kind of abandon.

This is a really cute and charming coloring book perfect for owl aficionados and colorists who like quirky pictures. This reminds me of a mash up of one of Johanna Basford's books and Amy Weber's Curious Creatures. I plan to color with Staedtler fibre tips and Fineliners, as well as colored pencils.As always with Creative Haven coloring books, the pages are single sided and perforated, and will need a paper buffer between pages when using markers.

This is a great gift for an owl lover and perfect for yourself if you like to get lost in intricate coloring pages. I've used Sharpie Ultra-points with great results. Will buy many more copies of this coloring book!

Will color the pages and by frames to decorate my kitchen, because I have all kind of owls as of now in my kitchen .I love Owls and chickens in my kitchen, so I pick up odds and ends.

Coloring hobbyists who loved Creative Cats, will have more fun with Ms. Sarnat's Owls. The art is fun on each themed page. The pages are perforated & the paper quality is excellent, able to hold up to water based markers & gel pens, as well as alcohol markers. Hours of coloring fun, each page is more interesting than the next. These Owls are so cute, you will want to frame your finished pictures!

So far so good. This is my first adult coloring book and I used RoseArt colored pencils to color the first few pages. It does get tiring after a little while and my writing hand hurts a little, but you can always take a break and start again where you left off.I like how there is a wide variety of shapes to color. It's a one-sided page coloring book as well so you don't have to worry about ruining a drawing at the back of the page you are coloring. I don't know if I can say the same when using markers to color or anything other than pencils.So far, I'm pretty happy with the purchase. It entertains me when I need to destress and I am always excited to color them. I'm not good at coloring or choosing a nice, coordinated palette but it does its job of taking my mind away somewhere else for a little bit while I am coloring.

Very detailed images. What can I say, I love owls and coloring! A marriage made in Creative Haven!As in another, more detailed review (see Magnificent Mehndi Designs from Creative Haven) these images were created with adults in mind; fine motor skills are a must because there are a lot of small to very small spaces to fill. What makes coloring so stress reducing for me - I have to concentrate on detail on the page and not a lot about anything else - ahh...relaxation for the mind.I use colored pencils, the paper it is printed on is not that thick for watercolors so I don't suggest that, but each page has only one image on one side and the page is perforated so that it can be torn out and colored separately. Crayons, pens, markers and pastels could also be used to color these very detailed pictures. Remember when playing was fun? It's back!An talented artist created these brand new images and Dover Books has struck gold with me in the modestly priced Creative Haven series.Imagine if DaVinci's sketches were available to color..how many more people would have been inspired to be creative and artistic!

I've been reading this book since the end of March, and I don't really know why I kept avoiding it all these months. I just felt that it was an interesting premise that somehow faltered. There was nothing wrong with the scholarship, or the writing, but it felt disjointed to me as if the author simply didn't know how to construct a narrative.The story of Gudrid should have been riveting. This is a woman who traveled from her Scandinavian home to Greenland, Iceland, and the area of the Americas known to Vikings as "Vinland," for its wild grapes. In her old age, she made a pilgrimage to Rome and became a nun. But the book goes every which-way, bouncing from her life, to archeological information, to Erik the Red, and back again, never quite allowing the reader to come to know Gudrid on a level where we could feel engaged with her life and adventures. I recognize that there's scant information about her, but what there was could have been better used, in my opinion.Still, if you're interested in Viking travels to the new world, this book does offer some insights, and that's not a bad thing.

Although there are a few interesting stories and facts in this book, it is not well organized overall, and the internal organization of the chapters was precarious. You might start out with an interesting tale of, say, Eric the Red, then suddenly find yourself reading a lesson on how to build a turf house in such detail that you forget completely about Eric the Red, the ostensible subject of that chapter. Then it might jump to some other off-topic subject before giving a passing nod to poor neglected Eric at the end. Apparently, neither the author nor her editor ever heard of transitions. Far too much space was devoted to the author's egocentric experience of being an amateur archaeologist, in detail ad nauseam. Overall, there was precious little information about Gudrid Thorbjornsdottir beyond "might have" or "would have" inferences, and a few contradictions hit one in the face. The author would have been better off taking herself out of the picture and presenting the book as a general "life of Icelandic women in 1000 AD." I've read dozens of works on the Viking period of history by respected sources. Given the egregiously misleading title, I found this book sometimes frustrating, often boring and, generally, disappointing.

Nancy M. Brown does a wonderful job at bringing history to life through her very capable writing and story-telling ability. She also does a great job at keeping the cultural integrity in place regarding the landscapes and people that she is discussing. She doesn't take away from, or gloss over, their flaws nor does she neglect their accomplishments. Her other book "Song of the Vikings" is one that I have recommended to many people because of just how in-depth she is when writing about her subject matter. I highly recommend both this book, and 'Song of the Vikings' for anyone that is interested in heathenry, history, or learning more about the Viking Age and how their stories got their foundations.

I was not sure how this book would read when I first purchased it, but I really enjoyed it. This book primarily looks at account of Gudrid's life, multiple marriages and travels, as well as Icelandic archaeological information to talk about property ownership, women's role with goods and communal living. I have read a few books that generalize about women's roles in Viking society, but I felt this book really got the point across that: without the women producing fine goods, the men would have nearly nothing to trade with.Maybe it's an odd comment, but I really loved the chapters on land claiming (Chapter 5) and turf homes and entire houses dissembled and moved plank by plank to Iceland (Chapter 8).I felt Gudrid's life was an excellent jumping off point for which the author talking about women's roles.

This wasn't exactly the book I thought it was going to be, but I learned a lot about the times that Gudrid lived in. They were brave and hearty and I can't imagine sailing to the coast of Canada to live for a few years surrounded by hostile Indians and a hostile climate. She is amazing. Good read.

This book is filled with really fascinating bits of history of Iceland and the Vikings. As other reviewers relate, it is somewhat oddly told and includes details most readers will find tedious on weaving and using archeologists tools and the like. Overall, I am glad to have read it, and the author does an excellent job of filling out the character of Gudrid and laying down good basic Icelandic history.

The story telling pulls you in. The author has written a book that based on fact draws you into the events like a good saga would.

Want to know more about Vineland, Greenland and the extent that a woman traveled during the early days of Iceland, this is the book.
