Marji's parents, especially her freethinking mother, modeled a strong belief in freedom and equality, while her French education gave her a strong faith in God. The girl's independence, which made her parents both proud and fearful, caused them to send her to Austria. With bold lines and deceptively uncomplicated scenes, Satrapi conveys her story. This book or comic is already pretty popular, and already a highly recommend book so what can I offer that these others haven't mentioned? I don't know, I honestly don't think I can but maybe someone can take away something about what I say. Now there not a lot of books dealing with Iran or the Iranian revolution and if their is I haven't found them yet. Now this book is about a young girl going through Iran cultural revolution and how people change and how her whole family had to change or adjust to their surroundings. Eventually she goes to Europe or France (if I remember correctly) and having to deal with love, liberals or hippies, and racism and mean nuns. I don't think story is the first of its kind but that doesn't mean that it should be undermined. The story has great illustrations and how the author deals with this struggles. In a way you see her loose her innocents through a child's eyes till adulthood. There are plenty of stories of young woman having to deal with change, and their countries sexist views and using their religion to justify their actions. Even some American states do it, so calling us nothing or better than Iran is hypocritical. If your intrested in Iran, or the story of a young girl having the deal with change or racism, or the struggles of living in a very conservative/ religious country I would highly recommend this book. This is part 1 of a 2 part story. Ms. Satrapi's masterpiece is one of my favorite works in all of comics. I read this when it came out and foisted it upon all of my comic reading friends. I gave a copy to a niece several years ago, and then recently bought another copy for another niece for her 11th birthday (I'll hold off on part 2 for her until she is 14). Because I had given it to both nieces, my 76 year old mother decided to read it. She is a retired English teacher, and she was floored at how good the story was and how powerful the medium of comics are in telling a story. Persepolis ended up jumpstarting my mother's interest in comics, and in the following weeks she read all three volumes of March, both volumes of Maus, the Story of My Tits, Chicken with Plums, and Two Brothers (this last one confused her, but she loved everything else).So, there you have it. This floored my 11 year niece and my 76 year old mother. It's brilliant and timeless.

This clever book is a kind of a memoir slash graphic novel slash comic book thatâ€™s essentially a coming-of-age story about a girl growing up in Iran.I really enjoyed this book and found it really interesting and thought-provoking. Although it sort of appears to be a light-hearted read, it gets into some serious stuff at times and really gives you some perspective.Overall, I highly recommend this book to both young adult readers and adults alike.

A long time ago my high school history teacher put the movie version on in class, much to the dismay on my classmates. A lot of people began complaining about it so my teacher turned it off. I remember being so fascinated by Marjane Satrapi's story and finally picked myself up a copy of her book. What a wonderful story. I think what I love most about the book (which is made up of comic strips) is how different the emotions can be and change. One story/comic strip will have you laughing, another furious, and another heartbroken. It was truly inspiring to see how Ms. Satrapi moved about her life and the trials and tribulations that came with it. Loved it and would highly recommend.

Finally, in the early 21st century do we receive a woman's view of life in Iran. Persepolis deserves to sit among Hirsi Ali's Infidel and Husseini's Murder in the Name of Honor. Perhaps because he parents were not overly devout Muslims, Marjane was permitted to read to her heart's content. She assimilated copious quantities of political dogma at a young age, which enabled her to see things from several perspectives.We are shown life through Marjane's eyes from her days in elementary school (even then she is a bit of a rebel, unwilling to wear the burka in the desert, though she is not alone here). Growing up in a society where social class and gender matter more than anything else, she feels genuine grief for her maid, who is doomed never to marry the neighbour she loves. Fortunate enough to evade the bullets through serendipity before the Shah's overthrow, she is forced to mature rapidly and learns that she must not blame children for the atrocities of their parents. Perhaps the most profound moral of her childhood tribulations is the price of freedom and the tragedy for those left behind, hoping, worrying and fearing for the fate of their loved ones who were imprisoned for being enemies of the state. Everyone living in the democracy must be grateful they are not suffering the fate of North Koreans.Always, regrettably, the dark puppet-masters are omnipresent. Willing to aid despots in their quest for power, the common people are often forgotten and seen as expendable. With no means to resist armed police (or escape from a barricaded cinema), their insurrections are often easy to quell. Recurrent themes are the deadly chains of hatred, vengeance and bitter grief. Forgiveness is a laudable goal, and though Gandhi succeeded in his endeavours, one is always left wondering whether the cost in human lives was worthwhile. Was there a better way? Could the soldiers have been convinced or coerced to turn against their own oppressive regime if necessary?Although told from Majane's perspective, the stories of her uncles, friends and extended families also receive their fair share of space. Each chapter of the first half reveals more of the history and culture of Iran in the 70s and 80s. No detail is omitted and the harsh realities of a country in the throes of anarchy are laid bare for readers to vicariously experience.Her secondary education in Vienna enabled her to learn more about the world beyond Iran's narrow and artificial borders. Like Anne Frank's diary, as Marjane matures, so too does her writing style and vocabulary. Despite being a comic book, the latter half is full of text and can be quite vexing to slog through. The most poignant and tragic moment comes when Marjane rejects her homeland and chooses freedom over a patriarchal dictatorship.

We forget how much of American Music is related, like a wonderful family tree. Tin Pan Alley meets Rock & roll. Gospel meets R & B, Dixieland leads to Jazz leads to Sinatra and Ella. The Band & Robbie Robertson captured that energy and now he becomes the history teacher & damn good one! It's also obvious that Robbie the 'dad' has done a great job of passing on the legacy and the love of America's music to his son. This was a Christmas gift for my grandsons, both musicians. I hope this causes them to look behind the curtain and listen to music and artists that they hadn't heard before this book/album.

This book is full of colorful graphics, but there's almost no content. If you want to find out any significant information about any of these musicians, this is NOT the book for that. It's little more than an illustrated list. Very disappointed. Returned the book.

This book is informative, beautiful, and fun! I know it's being marketed toward grade school kids as a brief education on the people who were vital to the musical world, but it truly is ideal for music lovers of all ages. My collection of books on music would not be complete without this on the shelf.While the information on each artist is not extensive, we're given the career highlights showing the importance of their contributions. There are also fun facts about each artist that give the bios a personal feel. The artwork is spectacular and the colors vibrant. I also have to mention the cover. I am not a fan of the dust jackets on all hardcovers these days. I just think they cheapen the look of hardcovers, and I miss the days when the design was on the actual cover. This book has a dust cover, but the exact same artwork is on the cover itself. The quality is exceptional.Of course, we're also given two CDs full of the music discussed in the book. This is the perfect addition, giving life to all the music on the pages.

Bought this book as a way to teach my kids about modern music. We are currently reading a chapter or two a night (2 pages) with a 6 year old girl and 4 year old boy. Some of it is a little (just a little) over their heads, but overall they are gaining a huge appreciation of lots of different types of music. They now ask for Bob Marley in the car and Chuck Berry to dance to at home. They want to know how the different styles of music fit together and what genres were first, who influenced who, etc.Overall we are very happy with the book. I have always loved The Band and you can tell Robbie Robertson is not only a life long student of music, but also a huge fan of the musicians he writes about (sometimes a little over the top). The song for each chapter is a nice touch as well. However, I have found using Spotify or YouTube to play the suggested song is easier since it is right on my iPhone and often the kids want to hear more examples of the artist we are reading about (more than one songs worth).Great time of year to pick this up - covers all genres and varieties of 20th century music and would do well under the tree.

It's a coffee table edition with enclosed CDs of the remastered recordings, wonderful drawings and the editorial info/historical data about the artists is insightful and complete. Robbie Robertson and his son have done their homework, for sure. What a perfect gift for the holiday season ahead, especially for all music fans of any generation.

Woah! This has already been well reviewed. But for those "Amazon fans" who read my reviews fairly often, and might've missed this great book, this complete package is something to take notice of if you're a music lover. The title says it all--inside are "Legends, Icons, & Rebels", and "Music That Changed The World."This is something I wasn't prepared for. This almost 12"X12" hardcover book with a very cool jacket contains some of the best artistic portraits of some of the best performers ever. Not only is the artwork very fine, the text is equally good. Yes, it's a "children's book", but what they don't really say is it's also a very cool adult music fan's book. The text is obviously written for younger readers (but not so simple as to bore adults), but so what? The information is still valid, interesting, and informative. The layout of the book is awesome too--you have to see it to understand--the samples on the Amazon page don't do it justice.Plus you get 2 CDs with a pertinent track from each artist. I know that most of us will already own the music included, but (again) so what? Together the text, the graphics, and the music make for an unbeatable package. And on an adult level, are there other artists who could've been here? Of course. But that's not the point. As a kid's book it's a great eye-opener to some great performers and music. And to an adult music fan (like me) it's just a cool book to read through beginning to end, or simply browse through. Or you can just enjoy the wonderful graphics that are very well executed, and that just about jump out at you as you turn virtually every page. I did take the CDs out (like I do with all CDs that come with books) of the slots (with a thumb notch for easy "out") in the inside of the back cover and put them in a double CD holder so they wouldn't get damaged.Well, I've said enough. Others have reviewed this fine book in more detail than I. But it is such a great book on different levels that I thought I just had to say something about it. This book has a place in my dedicated library alongside a number of other well done books on music. In my fifty-plus years of reading I've been lucky/foresighted enough to have amassed a fairly large number of books (I've kept everything I've ever read from the beginning) related to music (genres, specific eras, groups, biographies/autobiographies of individual musicians, critiques, etc.) along with hundreds of other volumes on many subjects. The shelves are bulging/bowing so I've become particular about what I add to my library--and this book is a no-brainer as far as that. Give this great book to a music loving child you know, and give a copy to yourself.

I heard the author's interview on NPR and was intrigued enough to immediately buy this book. I'm drawn to non-fiction espionage (Kim Philby, John Walker, the Rosenbergs, Robert Ames) and Dean's book didn't disappoint. His insightful perspective on how the radical Islamic jihadist mindset developed from localized conflicts in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Chechnya to the global phenomenon it is today, is by far the best explanation I've read on the subject. His internal conflict during the course of his involvement with the jihadi from an early age, through his time with KSM and OBL, to risking life and limb multiple times as a double-agent for Britain's MI6 (hence the title), is a testament to Dean's courage and ethic. Britain and its allies owe this brave and sensitive man a huge debt of gratitude, and his story is not to be missed.

An excellent read. The author is courages, intelligent, perceptive and disheartend by the misinterpretation of his religion for the purpose of cruelty and bloodshed. Aimen knew all the whos who within the terrorist camp and came through it with honour and respect.

â€œNine Lives: My Time as MI 6â€™s Top Spy Inside al Qaeda,â€ is a compelling walk through jihadist life by â€œAimen Deanâ€ (not his true name) and well worth a review. This exceptionally well-written account by Mr. Dean and his co-authors, Tim Lister and Paul Cruickshank, both of whom have distinguished themselves in their highly knowledgeable reporting on behalf of CNN, takes us from Deanâ€™s original home town of Khobar, Saudi Arabia to Jalalabad, Bosnia, the Philippines, and, of course, Afghanistan, where he functioned as the deputy director of the Darunta camp. Darunta, the smallest of the jihadist camps in Afghanistan, was a major counterterrorism focus by the United States and our allies, for it was in Darunta that al Qaeda conducted so much of its research into chemical and biological weapons. Along the way, Mr. Dean personally pledged his loyalty to Usaâ€™ama bin Ladin, the head of al Qaeda. He also had personal interface with other senior al Qaeda leaders to include Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the principal architect of the â€œ9-11â€ attacks on America. He saw much of the gore and endless violence which disproportionately took Muslim lives, and he began to question. Dean eventually offered his services in-place to British intelligence in an effort to destroy al Qaeda. For an extended period, he risked torture and death to function undercover in the most dangerous environment in the world, and, in so doing, proved to have the proverbial nine lives. After being outed, he escaped al Qaeda and now lives under an assumed name while always looking over his shoulder. â€œNine Livesâ€ is the singular best book Iâ€™ve read that chronicles life on the inside of al Qaeda, the now resurgent terrorist group that has claimed many American lives and so many more Muslim victims.

I bought the e-book version, but I then I felt the need to get the print version for reference. Thank you for writing this book. It opened my eyes to the logic and thinking of Jihadist terror. If Aimen Dean happens to read this, I am impressed and humbled by the risks you took to get the information to the West. I am also surprised you took the time to write a book. If I ever get the honor of meeting you in person (extremely doubtful, but you never know ;-) ), it would be my privilege to buy you a Diet Coke. :)

Maybe more a treatise on why he is entitled to admiration from fellow Muslims and westerners, still he weaves a well explained path through the jihadi world illuminating its ideology and motivation and, if he is right, the problems still facing the world.

Really enjoyed the book. Read it in three days and let me neighbor read it too. He also loved it and some of it scared him. lol....Can't imagine how much intel he would have got had the US not outed him? Leave it to us Americans to ruin things! Ugh...

I was on the fence about buying this cookbook because in my head, a man is the one who makes the chili. He doesn't need a recipe. He throws crap in a pot and it tastes great ! That's what men do is make Chili, steaks, and burgers. Well, that's the only thing my man does and I have had to claim his man card to get him to do those three things. He has made the chili in the house the past few times and has done a good job. I ordered this for him to sit on the coffee table thinking he may pick it up out of boredom one evening. I myself have 100s of cookbooks and I probably only pay attention to the recipes if it is something very specific. I am more about the science and the information on why the recipes work or the hints throughout cookbooks. I figured he would look through and it just get some ideas.Well, little does he know this is my cookbook!!! It not only has chili recipes but it has the basic recipes for all tex mex recipes I love such as Chili Con Carne, Huevos Rancheros, Red chili sauce, Homemade chorizo, etc. And the kicker is it has a recipe for El Real's cheese enchiladas in it. I can't wait to try it.If you have ever made a complete Mexican meal at home you know it is an all day affair. I am excited for the sauce recipes. My plan is on a weekend, make a triple batch of the sauces only and freeze them for future use. A cheese enchilada dinner would be easy to come home and make if I already had the chili con carne sauce and enchilada sauce made before hand. I am thinking of googling how to can the sauces for longer shelf life as well. It would be awesome housewarming gifts as well. I can't wait!

I live in Michigan, where the winters are cold and chili is my go-to for a warm, nourishing meal. I've tried quite a few recipes online, as well as other cookbooks on the subject, but I was really impressed with this one. Walsh gives an interesting history of chili itself, including regional variations, the history behind the chili cookoffs, etc. I actually sat down and read the whole thing. What really makes this book worth it are the recipes, though. The ingredients are all pretty readily available, unlike others I've seen (where the heck do you buy suet or tallow?) Wick Fowler's 4-Alarm Chili is amazing. As is Ed Real's Chili Con Carne (with 1/2 pound of bacon!) Walsh also includes alternate instructions for many recipes for those (like myself) who prefer to use a slow cooker. Highly recommend this book - you won't regret it!

I can't complain about the description of the book. It's subtitled "history...with recipes". The history content looks well researched and interesting, but you have to wade through pages of history to find the recipes (which in fairness look great). The only thing that stopped me from returning the book is that the index provides hotlinks to recipes, so you can go to "B" for example, scroll over to "Beef" and there they all are.Still, if you're going to split the recipes into themed categories, why not fix the Table of Contents so that each chapter opens to show a list of recipes in that chapter, with hotlinks to them, and then have the narrative and history after that. It is fundamental that a cookbook is only useful if you can pick it up, and quickly and intuitively find a recipe that you like, or that you've made before

This is a really fun book. And it is beautifully produced and bound. The printing and production is Chinese. This is a fairly thin, square hardback book that is easy to hold and read. The photos and layout are top quality. And the content is even better. Robb Walsh is a bona fide chili expert and aficionado.. He provides a good amount of history about the various origins of American chilis, chillis, and chiles. He also connects the dots with similar dishes from other parts of the world, such as goulash/gulyas that was developed on the range by cowboys in Czechoslovakia, Berber dishes in Morocco, Indian stews, etc. He also discusses the Greek (Montenegrin) origin of Cincinnati chili as a completel different dish from American southwest chili. He also discusses the various theories of southwest chili and the argument of the origins -- Tex-Mex, Mexican, Canary Islands, and other influences from immigrants to parts of Texas. There are great recipes with a lot of variety. This is a fun book just to pick up and read, then give the recipes a try and mark the differences and your preferences. If you like chili/chile/chilli and like to make it, get and enjoy this book.

Have made 3 of the recipes so far and enjoyed them all. The "Coney Island" chili recipe is good, but not as good as the coney sauce some relatives occasionally bring us from Michigan. The author mentions "the truth is, you wouldn't want to know the secret recipe. Some include beef hearts [...]". Well what's wrong with that? The stuff we get from Michigan does indeed include beef heart, and other organs. And it's delicious. Nothing wrong with offal.I made "A. J. Foyt's Supertex-Mex Chorizo Chili" over Labor Day weekend, and it was first rate. The recipe says "serves 8" but we got at least 10 servings out of it, maybe more. (Some of it we put in containers and gave to the in-laws â€” who also loved it â€” but they may've made more than 2 servings out of it.) My mother-in-law now says I'm her go-to guy for good chili. (A mixed blessing. Prep time was ~2 hours. But I'm not a very experienced cook, so YMMV. Also part of that was making a pound of home-made chorizo (recipe included). Did you know chorizo was just ground pork with some spices? I didn't.)The pictures and other explanatory text are also good and reasonably entertaining and informative. This book is half cookbook and half history book. I only wish that the Kindle edition had a better table of contents with links to specific recipes.Anyway. If you like chili, this is a great book. I look forward to exploring more recipes.

I absolutely adore this book. My daughter is young and I donâ€™t think she will truly appreciate the content in the book until she gets older however I still read it to her often! Itâ€™s poetry style written. Great job!!!
