Abe Lincoln's Hat (Step into Reading)

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-As a young lawyer, Abe Lincoln found that his stovepipe hat came in handy for more than just covering his head. It also served as a good place to keep important papers. Brenner weaves this and other anecdotes about our 16th president into this easy-to-read selection. Watercolor illustrations highlight the sometimes choppy but informative text. Pair with David Adler's A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln (Holiday, 1989) where beginning biographies are in demand.Lesley McKinstry, Findlay-Hancock County Public Library, OHCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 1-3. A far cry from the reverent tone of most children's books on Lincoln, this short, anecdotal biography actually humanizes him. Lincoln is shown as a struggling and somewhat disorganized lawyer who makes his way through goodwill and good sense. The book begins with his purchase of a tall black hat. Later, a group of boys rig up a high wire and knock it off his head, scattering the important papers he kept inside. Courtroom stories include Lincoln proving which man owned a young horse by letting the colt loose to go to its mother and his defense of a slave's right to be granted freedom in Illinois, a free state. Although Brenner includes no source notes, she states that all the stories she relates are true. The humor, lively lines, and soft, shaded colors of Cook's illustrations add to the book's appeal. Since my Kindergartener (age five-and-a-half) had completed the Step 2 books in the Step Into Reading series of books, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Step 3 books. I was a bit hesitant because I noticed there is quite a big leap between the Step 2 and Step 3 books, especially in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. The vocabulary is more advanced with higher order words, and the sentences are longer. I was also concerned that my daughter might not like the topics which seemed to be more 'academic' with history-based stories. My worries were unfounded. She loves the books and is reading them with very little help from me.These books are excellent for building children's reading skills as well as increasing their confidence. Once you've completed the Step 1 and Step 2 books (I would advise proceeding level by level), the Step 3 books are not as daunting as they might first appear. In "Abe Lincoln's Hat", young readers are introduced to our 16th President. There is a lot of background information provided which makes for interesting reading, and it is pitched appropriately for young readers so as not to overwhelm them. The fact that Abe used his tall black hat to keep papers in is an interesting anecdote that had my little one giggling.I can't recommend these books highly enough - they are great for building reading skills, and also educational. This book is a great introduction to history, and I also came up with a series of short comprehension questions based on the story in this book so as to hone my daughter's comprehension skills (e.g. "Where did Abe live?", "What did Abe do with his hat?", "Describe the kind of person Abe was?").

I had this book in my school library and have given at least 5 copies to grand and great grandchildren. They all loved this story about Abe.

This is an interesting story of Abraham Lincoln and his years of being an attorney. It speaks of his character of fairness and to his sometimes disorganization (misplacing important information). Very humanizing and humorous.

The book is a little long for early childhood children and it's a small size book. I thought it would be larger in size.

My first grade class loved this. It has some standard information as well as a more personal side of Abraham Lincoln.

Grandson loves it

Easy to read

These step into reading books are so great for my 7 year old. I love how these books are interesting and fun and he gets to learn a piece of history.

In “Whatever It Takes,” Paul Tough tells the inspiring story of how Geoffrey Canada (founder of Harlem’s Children Zone) is attempting to change Harlem by radically reforming the way that children are raised and educated in Harlem. Canada’s vision is to create a “conveyor belt” (yes, he actually calls it that) to success. With its gamut of schools and services, Harlem’s Children Zone is designed to provide parents and their children with the support structure that they need to enter and succeed in the American higher education system. For Canada, Harlem’s Children Zone is designed to be a virus that will infect and contaminate all of Harlem, forever transforming it.This book praises Geoffrey Canada as a charismatic visionary who has done his research. Half of the book details how Harlem’s Children Zone actually functions, and the other half explains the academic debate around education empowerment. For both Paul Tough and Geoffrey Canada, the scientific evidence says this: Yes, nature and nurture are important, but so is schooling. Through early, sustained, and deliberate intervention, children can adopt the habits, attitudes, and ways of thinking that will transform their lives. And Geoffrey Canada is obsessed with transforming the lives of Harlem’s residents, whatever it takes – and regardless of Harlem wants to change or not.Paul Tough is a very good and diligent reporter, but much of the book is unsettling. It reads more like a hagiography rather than a nuanced and sophisticated look at the American education reform debate. For one thing, he never questions Geoffrey Canada’s obsession with test scores, and he would never dream of questioning the agenda of the hedge-fund billionaire who is financing Geoffrey’s “quest to change Harlem and America.” For both author and protagonist, the ends justify the means. Yes, the focus on test scores means that teachers and students are stressed-out all the time, and are deeply unhappy, leading to massive turnover among the faculty. But getting into college changes lives, doesn’t it? Isn’t getting Harlem kids into the middle-class worth all the sacrifice? These are questions that no one can answer except the parents and the kids themselves, but I don’t think anyone has really bothered to ask them these questions. There’s something deeply repugnant about the top-down, results-oriented, data-driven approach that Geoffrey Canada has opted for in Harlem. Whether or not he succeeds in creating the conveyor belt to success he envisions, the fact that he thinks it’s a worthy goal to properly and rationally structure the lives of children is worrisome in itself.

“Whatever It Takes” chronicles the struggle of the Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem Children’s Zone in their work against institutional poverty here in Harlem, NY. This powerful reflection examines how organizational structures and services evolved from Canada’s recognition that historically disenfranchised communities especially those like the one he grew up in, developed “contaminated” cultures that did not support young people as they embarked on academic ventures in their schools. Recognizing the disparities between the childhoods of middle class white Americans and the childhoods students of color endured in poverty stricken inner city communities, Canada and the Harlem Children's Zone began identifying programs that would counteract the hardship students in Harlem endured. The book illustrates some interesting aspects these programs took on to inform both their structure and management. For instance, since the Harlem Children’s Zone was a charter school a significant source of its funding was through private foundations. As a result the school’s operates with a different requirements and methods for accountability than of most public schools. Canada used this to make student achievement the goal that would drive every aspect of their work. “Canada believed the best way to achieve that goal was to act not like a bighearted altruist but like a ruthless capitalist, devoted to the bottom line. He didn’t think it was right to hold himself or his employees to a looser standard of achievement simply because they happened to be making the world a better place.” (pg. 135) This perspective raises some concerns regarding what motivates our work in education and what we truly value about schools and the growth of the young people we serve.Although I struggle with this idea of acting like a ruthless capitalist, I can certainly agree with the notion of using data to drive decision making and the urgency of work and change that needs to take place within an organization to facilitate progress towards making all of our students successful. This in part certainly motivated the community partnerships that allow the Harlem Children's zone to engage in so much of the social education and services work that has made their work so successful. As schools consider their place and roles within communities “Whatever It Takes” offers valuable insight on how and why organizational partnerships within local networks don’t happen nearly enough within our schools. In this way the Harlem Children's Zone is a fantastic model for school leaders to use in examining how they can better utilize resources already present within their communities to support the families and children they serve. The way the book describes how these partnerships and programs have interwoven into the organization fabric of the Harlem Children’s Zone made this idea of the Conveyor Belt of safety nets and support structures that have made the school so successful. What I think is lost in the book is that Organizational frames were consciously used to inform how develop these programs developed. (Structure, Human Resources, Political, Symbolic) But, the context was unique to Harlem and although Canada’s quest has been to change Harlem and America the book fails to illustrate the degree of impact that context has on this work. While Baby College, 3 Year Old Journey, and Pre-Kinder (All Day) programs did wonders for Harlem many other factors need to be considered in developing functioning “Conveyor Belts” across schools in the United States.“Whatever It Takes” gives school leaders an opportunity to consider how relations with external organizations can be worked into the fabric of a school's structure. There are many lessons to be gained from considering how social capital can be cultivated from similar work and there are plenty of things to consider with regard to how Canada’s very authoritarian leadership style drove change in this institution through passion, dedication, and an unrivaled commitment to the students and community he serves in Harlem. Although this would not be a recommended read if you're looking for examples of distributed leadership, there are important lessons that can inform leaders of times that require more definitive charge and direction from a leader. “Whatever It Takes” is a wonderful read for leaders considering the structure and connections within their organizations and will challenge readers to consider the role leadership should take in driving school reforms.

Geoffrey Canada has developed a comprehensive, holistic formula to successfully educate poor kids in Harlem who historically have not had a good educational outcome. This book details the work that went into the program his Harlem Children's Zone developed and administers. One of the best parts of the book is the detailed discussion of why kids who come from a background of poverty more often than not do not do well in school. It debunks myths that these kids have inferior intellects. It covers how their upbringing by well-meaning but highly stressed and beleagered parents puts them behind their affluent peers. It details how Canada, who was born in a poor neighborhood in the South Bronx, decided that if these kids were going to succeed in large numbers that his approach was going to have to affect every part of their lives, not just what happens while they are in school. The city I live in, Charlotte, NC, struggles with many of the same problems of a wide achievement gap between affluent white kids and poor black and Latino children. I am telling anyone who will listen that there is a way to educate all of the kids in our community and that what Geoffrey Canada has come up with may be the best approach. This is a great book that anyone who is passionate about public education and the inequities that exist in them will enjoy reading.

I thought this book was a great read and summarizes what I believe is the true cause of the great divide. Lack of access and knowledge by the poor that they truly have choices. And that part of having choices is that they can make add choices to the list of options not only select from the options presented. More access and belief in true choices is what is necessary. Easy to say, near impossible to achieve but no reason not to try!

While obviously the Beatles overshadow almost anything by anybody, McCartney, despite a few silly detours, output a remarkable collection of songs throughout the seventies. This book takes you from the final moments of the Beatles through to John Lennon's death and makes some sense of the erratic nature of his output. It also reminds you of the creative courage he showed by going from part of the world's biggest act, to touring in a bus in the UK playing spontaneous gigs at smaller venues just to reinvigorate his creative spirit.I've always loved the best of McCartney's 70s output even though there were moments of almost traumatically bad songs sprinkled in there (Mary had a little Lamb for god's sake?) and this book will take you through the formation or dissolution of Wings in all its incarnations as well as - to a lesser degree - covering the background of the Beatles ongoing saga.Although I purchased this on the Kindle, I actually bought it again in hardcover to have around as a bookshelf reference, such was my enjoyment of it.

Wow! Admit it, we assume superstar icons like Beatles, Paul, John, George and Ringo led idyllic lives, seamlessly creating some of the greatest music ever composed leading charmed lives we could only dream. Not so. Paul McCartney relates to journalist, Tom Doyle, the angst, tribulations and trials. Oh, the trials of post Beatle life including trial after court trial. And all the years of Beatlemania made it all the harder to continue a career with new musical ventures, most notably Wings. Gut wrenching, vexing, sometimes humerous this reader has his eyes opened to the complex world of the music industry. Who would have known the McCartneys lived hand to mouth, Paul's near nervous breakdown to his record setting record sales. Also, in detail is the loving, stable nearly normal life Linda and his children provided a foundation. I have this four stars because of a and tied confusing chronology. Also, sometimes I didn't care for Sir McCartney with his frugality, obsessive work ethic, and treatment of band mates. All part of this very interesting background to the music industry and a true musical legend The seventies and early eighties gone, the story happily continues.

There once was a man named Paul,Who used to be a Beatle and all,They had a falling out,With a thunder and shout,And then he became a solo artist.Man, my rhymes suck. This book doesn't though. The book was written by a reporter from a British music magazine (Q maybe?) and it reads at times as a long magazine article. It's very well written, and is multiple sources from past Wings band mates. It's not too tabloidy, and it is a pretty quick read. As a 30+ year Macca fan who treasures the 70's stuff, I really enjoyed this and learned a few things I did not know.

I am more a Lennon fan. But I appreciate that John was only part of the equation. I can't forgive Paul for some of his stupid songs and many more I can't get out of my head. He doesn't come off too well in this book. Can't pick or keep a band together. Give him credit for being a genius. I was tired of him by the time the book ends. I say it's worth the read.

Well-written chronicle of Paul's 1970s activities starting from around the time of The Beatles' breakup, through solo projects, from the first to the last Wings album, ending the decade with the death of John Lennon. I learned a few things I didn't know and enjoyed how the author, while clearly showing respect for Paul's talents and achievements, also highlighted some weaknesses - including a certain naivete that seemed to get Macca in trouble consistently. Clearly made me go back and listen to some Wings albums I had overlooked.

Based on several interviews the author did with McCartney, there's a good amount of substance here and not all conjecture. Definitely some things about Wings that I didn't know about that I learned from this book. Writing is pretty solid and kept my interest until the end. Very good for super fans. People only mildly interested in McCartney's life post Beatles in the 1970s may not find it that interesting.

Captures the essence of the Wings decade. It was interesting how it appeared so seamless to me at the time, yet those years were quite trying for McCartney. Nice insights into how difficult it was to emerge from the shadow of the Beatles and try to create a band that gels when there is only one superstar in the lineup.

A great look behind the scenes of the years between the break up of the Beatles and the breakup of Wings. Gives a great insight into the real Paul and shows how much he truly loved Linda. Points out all his flaws and yet leaves you adoring him even more when it’s over.

Dandelion Wine: A Novel (Grand Master Editions), by Ray Bradbury

Amazon.com Review

World-renowned fantasist Ray Bradbury has on several occasions stepped outside the arenas of horror, fantasy, and science fiction. An unabashed romantic, his first novel in 1957 was basically a love letter to his childhood. (For those who want to undertake an even more evocative look at the dark side of youth, five years later the author would write the chilling classic Something Wicked This Way Comes.) Dandelion Wine takes us into the summer of 1928, and to all the wondrous and magical events in the life of a 12-year-old Midwestern boy named Douglas Spaulding. This tender, openly affectionate story of a young man's voyage of discovery is certainly more mainstream than exotic. No walking dead or spaceships to Mars here. Yet those who wish to experience the unique magic of early Bradbury as a prose stylist should find Dandelion Wine most refreshing. --Stanley Wiater

Ray Bradbury is my favorite writer of all-time. Dandelion Wine is the tale of a small-town summer in 1928, told through the eyes of the colorful characters who inhabit it. There is a boy and his brother, awakening to consciousness of the enormous scope of being alive. No emotion is spared: joy and terror, tragedy and hope, all wrapped up in prose that is so beautiful it hurts. When I first started reading, this book confused me. It lacks the narrative arc that is so common in novels, and presents more like a series of vignettes with no obvious connection. It's also not science fiction, which is disconcerting if you are used to Bradbury's fantastical worlds. No, this is simply a story about summer, the mundanities of life transformed into something magical. It took me a few chapters to understand this. I persisted reading only because Bradbury is such a good writer be can make anything interesting, even when nothing is happening. But about a third of the way through, this book got its hooks in me and never let go. As it reaches its conclusion it becomes more than the sum of its parts and you see the thematic unity. It's a story about treasuring life in the face of mortality.Any writer striving for improvement should read this book, if you can bear the shame of knowing your greatest efforts will never compare.

That would take an entire page! Absolutely one of my favorite reads. Now reading it again with my adult grandson (who lives in Europe)....on very long distance calls of over 2 hours.....we read paragraphs back and forth...relate our own "Dandelion WIne" summers. Now we're writing our experiences out and placing the pages between the pages that "take us back"....he is so taken by the story ...he has to continually stop reading because his own memory kicks in....as does mine....I return to the "Blueberry Summers" of my youth....and find the time not so long past.

Ray BradburyAugust 22nd 1922 - June 5th, 2012When Ray Bradbury died reactions came from everywhere including from President Obama. Surprising to me, few mentioned the one of his works that meant so much to me and affected my life so deeply. While he was most known to the general public for his science fiction, I found his mostly autobiographical novel Dandelion Wine to be the most impactful. At the same time it best illustrated Bradbury’s incredible command of the language, his ability to stir the imagination, and the way in which he could open windows on life.I couldn’t count the number of times I would reread a single sentence and become overwhelmed with admiration and envy at how he used words to create images in the mind’s eye. All this was particularly on display in Dandelion Wine and its sequel, Farewell Summer. For Bradbury, it couldn’t be just water. “Nothing else would do but the pure waters which had been summoned from the lakes far away and the sweet fields of grassy dew on early morning, lifted to the open sky, carried in laundered clusters nine hundred miles, brushed with wind, electrified with high voltage, and condensed upon cool air. This water, falling, raining, gathered yet more of the heavens in its crystals. Taking something of the east wind and the west wind and the north wind and the south, the water made rain and the rain, within this hour of rituals, would be well on its way to wine.”Essentially, Dandelion Wine is the story of a summer in the life of a twelve year old boy as he comes to understand what it means to be alive. But it is also a time capsule for the year 1928 of life in a small town when everyone’s world was much smaller and more compact. There is horror, love, comedy, wonder, nostalgia, and human relations. Bradbury could find unique ways to describe them all.I first read Dandelion Wine in 1957 when I wasn’t much older than Douglas Spaulding, the central character. It helped me put life in perspective as I was leaving high school. I read it the second time in the early ‘80s when I introduced my daughter to it. Kelly and I sat on our front porch swing one warm summer evening and I read aloud to her the story of Bill Forrester and Helen Loomis. It was all I could do to finish it and when I did we both had tears streaming down our cheeks. Such was the power of imagination and Bradbury’s ability to stroke it to life using just words.I read it the third time in preparation for reading the sequel, Farewell Summer, written 55 years after Dandelion Wine. Like a fine wine, it had only gotten better with age. Appropriately, Farewell Summer was given to me by Kelly and I read it on summer’s eve 2012. It was the perfect beginning for yet another summer. In both books the ravine in Green Town, Illinois, based on Waukegan, Illinois where Bradbury grew up was a central feature. I couldn’t resist going to Googlearth to see if the ravine was real. It was. And, it is still there even after Waukegan had changed from a small town to a satellite of Chicago. I was pleased to simply find I could locate it. But when I zoomed in and highlighted the little tree symbol I found the ravine is now Ray Bradbury Park. Perfect!Dan WintersJune 29, 2012

I was unsure if I liked this book, but after a while I started to like it and then I loved it. I could "feel" myself living in 1928 and the simpler life than we have in 2017. Children played outside and adults sat on porches and talked to their neighbors. And there is a lot of insight into things...like being a lonely old man with a lot of memories that the young boy called The Time Machine because of his stories. I was sorry to finish it.

These have the most imaginative designs I've been able to find. I've purchased other brands are these are much more imaginative, unique, and fun, whimsical. Highly recommend!

My husband and I have started using Adult Coloring Books as a way to de-stress. I know that many crafts use the same part of the brain that one uses in meditation, so I wasn't surprised to read that many other adults were turning to coloring. I have bought several different types of books and I find that I like a lot of the ones by Creative Haven/Dover. I have found that my non-alcohol based markers and my gel pens all leak through this brand of book, so I am sure to place paper between the pages to keep the pages behind fresh and clean. I've found that freezer paper works really well for this purpose. The pages of the book are single-sided and are perforated at the bound edge so you can remove the page to color or to frame afterwards. The pages are a bright white and have a decent pound weight - they are not flimsy. This is the second Creative Haven book by Marjorie Sarnat (her first has been one of my favorite - Cats.) This book of Owls is now tied for for my top honors. There are 31 images to color (if you don't include the small faceplate on the title page.) The images have a wide range, including: an owl sitting on a wildly decorated crescent moon, an owl with butterflies, a "smart" owl amongst his/her books, owls on a wooden rocking horse, pirate owls, fairy tale owl, totem pole owls, steampunk owl, the owl and the pussycat (yes, cat included!) and many, many more. These illustrations are so lovely, I plan to do each and every one of them. I love that the Ms. Sarnat has used such wild colors in her artwork - I plan to color these with just that kind of abandon.

This is a really cute and charming coloring book perfect for owl aficionados and colorists who like quirky pictures. This reminds me of a mash up of one of Johanna Basford's books and Amy Weber's Curious Creatures. I plan to color with Staedtler fibre tips and Fineliners, as well as colored pencils. As always with Creative Haven coloring books, the pages are single sided and perforated, and will need a paper buffer between pages when using markers.

Since I'm unable to upload any pictures of the pages, here are a few descriptions:Mama Owl and owlet on a branch, lots of floral and leaf detail, sun shining.Owl on a crescent moon, lots of peace signs & yin-yang, & celestial bodies.Gorgeous owl with wings spread, flying among some butterflies and flowers.Owl with accompanying crafty owls with button eyes (sounds creepy but is really cute).Hippy owl with a peace sign alongside guitars.Family of owls riding on a rocking horseMr. and Mrs. Owl (or King and Queen?) along with goblets.Nautical owl with ships, shells and sea creatures.Owl with Russian nesting dolls.Royal owl in the foreground and a castle in the backgroundWizardy owl looking into a crystal ball that has a castle inside it.Owl flying among some beautiful kites.Totem pole owl complete with an owl perched on one of the totem wingsOwl surrounded by coins and monetary billsPharmacist owl with tonic & tincture bottlesSteampunk owl, Tarot owl, pinwheel owl, harp owl....You get the idea....so many adorable and whimsical owl pictures! This is a great gift for an owl lover and perfect for yourself if you like to get lost in intricate coloring pages. I've used Sharpie Ultra-points with great results. Will buy many more copies of this coloring book!

Will color the pages and by frames to decorate my kitchen, because I have all kind of owls as of now in my kitchen .I love Owls and chickens in my kitchen, so I pick up odds and ends.

Coloring hobbyists who loved Creative Cats, will have more fun with Ms. Sarnat's Owls. The art is fun on each themed page. The pages are perforated & the paper quality is excellent, able to hold up to water based markers & gel pens, as well as alcohol markers. Hours of coloring fun, each page is more interesting than the next. These Owls are so cute, you will want to frame your finished pictures!

So far so good. This is my first adult coloring book and I used RoseArt colored pencils to color the first few pages. It does get tiring after a little while and my writing hand hurts a little, but you can always take a break and start again where you left off.I like how there is a wide variety of shapes to color. It's a one-sided page coloring book as well so you don't have to worry about ruining a drawing at the back of the page you are coloring. I don't know if I can say the same when using markers to color or anything other than pencils. So far, I'm pretty happy with the purchase. It entertains me when I need to destress and I am always excited to color them. I'm not good at coloring or choosing a nice, coordinated palette but it does its job of taking my mind away somewhere else for a little bit while I am coloring.

Very detailed images. What can I say, I love owls and coloring! A marriage made in Creative Haven! As in another, more detailed review (see Magnificent Mehndi Designs from Creative Haven) these images were created with adults in mind; fine motor skills are a must because there are a lot of small to very small spaces to fill. What makes coloring so stress reducing for me - I have to concentrate on detail on the page and not a lot about anything else - ahh...relaxation for the mind.I use colored pencils, the paper it is printed on is not that thick for watercolors so I don't suggest that, but each page has only one image on one side and the page is perforated so that it can be torn out and colored separately. Crayons, pens, markers and pastels could also be used to color these very detailed pictures. Remember when playing was fun? It's back!An talented artist created these brand new images and Dover Books has struck gold with me in the modestly priced Creative Haven series.Imagine if DaVinci's sketches were available to color..how many more people would have been inspired to be creative and artistic!

"Brown's enthusiasm is infectious as she re-teaches us our history."?The Boston Globe  Five hundred years before Columbus, a Viking woman named Gudrid sailed off the edge of the known world. She landed in the New World and lived there for three years, giving birth to a baby before sailing home. Or so the Icelandic sagas say. Even after archaeologists found a Viking longhouse in Newfoundland, no one believed that the details of Gudrid’s story were true. Then, in 2001, a team of scientists discovered what may have been this pioneering woman’s last house, buried under a hay field in Iceland, just where the sagas suggested it could be.Joining scientists experimenting with cutting-edge technology and the latest archaeological techniques, and tracing Gudrid’s steps on land and in the sagas, Nancy Marie Brown reconstructs a life that spanned?and expanded?the bounds of the then-known world. She also sheds new light on the society that gave rise to a woman even more extraordinary than legend has painted her and illuminates the reasons for its collapse.  "Brown rightly leaves scholarly work to scholars. Instead, her account presents an enthusiastic appreciation of her education in how fieldwork and literature offer insights into the past."?The Seattle Times "[Brown has] a lovely ear for storytelling."--Los Angeles Times Book Review NANCY MARIE BROWN is the author of A Good Horse Has No Color and Mendel in the Kitchen. She lives in Vermont with her husband, the writer Charles Fergus.

I've been reading this book since the end of March, and I don't really know why I kept avoiding it all these months. I just felt that it was an interesting premise that somehow faltered. There was nothing wrong with the scholarship, or the writing, but it felt disjointed to me as if the author simply didn't know how to construct a narrative. The story of Gudrid should have been riveting. This is a woman who traveled from her Scandinavian home to Greenland, Iceland, and the area of the Americas known to Vikings as "Vinland," for its wild grapes. In her old age, she made a pilgrimage to Rome and became a nun. But the book goes every which-way, bouncing from her life, to archeological information, to Erik the Red, and back again, never quite allowing the reader to come to know Gudrid on a level where we could feel engaged with her life and adventures. I recognize that there's scant information about her, but what there was could have been better used, in my opinion.Still, if you're interested in Viking travels to the new world, this book does offer some insights, and that's not a bad thing.

Although there are a few interesting stories and facts in this book, it is not well organized overall, and the internal organization of the chapters was precarious. You might start out with an interesting tale of, say, Eric the Red, then suddenly find yourself reading a lesson on how to build a turf house in such detail that you forget completely about Eric the Red, the ostensible subject of that chapter. Then it might jump to some other off-topic subject before giving a passing nod to poor neglected Eric at the end. Apparently, neither the author nor her editor ever heard of transitions. Far too much space was devoted to the author's egocentric experience of being an amateur archaeologist, in detail ad nauseam. Overall, there was precious little information about Gudrid Thorbjornsdottir beyond "might have" or "would have" inferences, and a few contradictions hit one in the face. The author would have been better off taking herself out of the picture and presenting the book as a general "life of Icelandic women in 1000 AD." I've read dozens of works on the Viking period of history by respected sources. Given the egregiously misleading title, I found this book sometimes frustrating, often boring and, generally, disappointing.

Nancy M. Brown does a wonderful job at bringing history to life through her very capable writing and story-telling ability. She also does a great job at keeping the cultural integrity in place regarding the landscapes and people that she is discussing. She doesn't take away from, or gloss over, their flaws nor does she neglect their accomplishments. Her other book "Song of the Vikings" is one that I have recommended to many people because of just how in-depth she is when writing about her subject matter. I highly recommend both this book, and 'Song of the Vikings' for anyone that is interested in heathenry, history, or learning more about the Viking Age and how their stories got their foundations.

I was not sure how this book would read when I first purchased it, but I really enjoyed it. This book primarily looks at account of Gudrid's life, multiple marriages and travels, as well as Icelandic archaeological information to talk about property ownership, women's role with goods and communal living. I have read a few books that generalize about women's roles in Viking society, but I felt this book really got the point across that: without the women producing fine goods, the men would have nearly nothing to trade with.Maybe it's an odd comment, but I really loved the chapters on land claiming (Chapter 5) and turf homes and entire houses dissembled and moved plank by plank to Iceland (Chapter 8).I felt Gudrid's life was an excellent jumping off point for which the author talking about women's roles.

This wasn't exactly the book I thought it was going to be, but I learned a lot about the times that Gudrid lived in. They were brave and hearty and I can't imagine sailing to the coast of Canada to live for a few years surrounded by hostile Indians and a hostile climate. She is amazing. Good read.

This book is filled with really fascinating bits of history of Iceland and the Vikings. As other reviewers relate, it is somewhat oddly told and includes details most readers will find tedious on weaving and using archeologists tools and the like. Overall, I am glad to have read it, and the author does an excellent job of filling out the character of Gudrid and laying down good basic Icelandic history.

The story telling pulls you in. The author has written a book that based on fact draws you into the events like a good saga would.

Want to know more about Vineland, Greenland and the extent that a woman traveled during the early days of Iceland, this is the book.
