Carlson's book covers statistical study in archaeological contexts using the R statistical programming language. R is an open source, free version of the S-Plus language. It has a steep learning curve and can be daunting to people expecting a more GUI oriented approach to statistics. But ... it's free. And over two decades it has become an international standard with thousands of packages dedicated to specific disciplines and implementing routines that are not directly implemented by the primary source. Carlson's book provides a strong background and basic structure of analysis that will benefit many archaeologists, who are often trained to use spreadsheets - shudder - as databases, and innocently trust the canned routines included. QMAUR however, addresses things like examing the data first, plotting and conducting exploratory analysis to detect oddities, errors and outliers that require attention, correction or further treatment. It is a first class work for any archaeologist interested statistics and limited in budget.

If you want a good book about the fabled Ciudad Blanca, read Douglas Preston's "The Lost City of the Monkey God." If you want a book about a whiny New Yorker who is woefully ill prepared for any sort of outdoor adventure and yet somehow thinks it's a good idea to "find himself" on a trek through the dense jungles of Mosquitia, then I guess Jungeland will do.The book is broken down into very short chapter vignettes, alternating between Stewart's trip through the jungle and Theodore Morde's 1940 expedition in search of Ciudad Blanca. At first it's a contrivance that works well, but it quickly becomes annoying, mostly because Stewart neglects to add any real weight to his writing or research. In fact, Stewart fails to realize the biggest issue with Morde's "discovery" of Ciudad Blanca: it was all a farce. Morde and Brown established a gold panning operation on the river and never bothered looking for the famous lost city, and then he fabricated the entire thing on his return to the States, including falsifying his notebooks. That alone wouldn't really be too much of a problem for Jungleland. Instead, what really kills the book is the fact that Stewart spends so much of it whining about how his feet hurt, how hot and sweaty he is, how exhausted he is, and how much he misses his family. I've been on long treks and travels overseas before, and I get all of that. But Stewart takes it to an entirely new level. I wonder if his companions, namely archeology Chris Begley, wished he had just drowned during one of their river crossings.Stewart mentions in the book that he is used to dangerous situations as part of his job. Seeing how much he whined, worried, and complained the whole time, it makes me wonder if the most dangerous thing he's done was walk into a Harlem Starbucks.

This is an ok read but, in the end, disappointing. The life of spy and adventurer Theodore Morde is in itself worth a book and the trek that Stewart takes into Mosquitia (in Morde's footsteps...kinda) should have been exciting. But the way the book is organized (toggling between chapters on Morde and Stewart's own trek) makes it all a bit disjointed. AND, in spite of sickness, hunger, snakes, mosquitoes, and pirates (yes, pirates), Stewart makes his trek surprisingly mundane. The conclusion is also a bit of a letdown, although its mystical punchline could have been profound. [One final note: reading this at a time when the pundits are going crazy about the lack of democracy in Venezuela is interesting. Part of the back story to this book is how a US-backed military coup displaced a popularly elected President, Mel Zelaya, just before Stewart landed in Honduras. This didn't concern too many folks in North America. Zelaya, like Maduro today, represented the poor...seems like it is ok to abandon democracy when it is only the poor who get hurt.]

I read The Lost City of Z a few months before I read Christopher S. Stewart’s Jungleland. I might have appreciated Stewart’s book more if I had read it first, but I don’t believe that doing so would have given me a better impression of Stewart as either an author or an adventurer. Percy Fawcett of Z was at home in the bush, but Stewart was no more at home in the bush than I would be.According to the book’s jacket, Stewart is a writer and editor with the Wall Street Journal. He became interested in jungle exploring after reading the journal of an adventurer, explorer named Theodore “Ted” Morde, who explored the wilds of Honduras some 70 years earlier. Wikipedia describes Morde as, “ an adventurer, explorer, diplomat, spy, journalist, and television news producer best known for his claim of discovering the "Lost City of the Monkey God" Stewart becomes obsessed with finding the “Lost City of the Monkey God” and so he enlists an older man of some experience in the bush named Chris Begley to assist him in his journey. Begley is described as, “a real-life Indiana Jones.” The book is written in chapters that alternate between Stewart’s story and excerpts from Morde’s journal.Stewart leaves his wife and young daughter at home in New York, and he and Begley go to Honduras to begin their journey. Descriptions of life in the Honduras jungle border on the bizarre. In one segment, the duo and some local helpers are moving through the wilderness jungle, enduring insect bites, avoiding poisonous snakes and jaguars, when a young native girl, who is carrying a baby, and who is dressed like any young woman in any city in America, and holding an umbrella as protection from the sun, comes down a path toward them. Her picture in the book shows that she is smiling at the weary travelers. Another segment depicts the group as enduring hardships of jungle life, and they finally reach a village, where they listen to a radio to receive the latest news. When Stewart and Begley reach what they assume is the Lost City, one wonders why they went to so much trouble. Stewart would have had a better book if he had just printed Morde’s journal.

This really is a great title for A very mediocre tale. The author pumps up a modest excursion to a site already well-known to try and come across as a serious researcher. There are a number of other books on the white city presenting serious research, but perhaps it is inappropriate to mention them by name here. A little Googling will serve you well.

Imre Lakatos (1922-1974) was a Hungarian philosopher of mathematics and science; the companion volume to this book is The Methodology of Scientific Research Programmes: Volume 1: Philosophical Papers. The Editor's Introduction states, "When Imre Lakatos died in 1974, many friends and colleagues expressed the hope that his unpublished papers would be made available. Some were also interested in seeing his contributions to journals and conference proceedings collected together in a book... we have prepared two volumes of selected papers which we hope will meet these demands. None of the papers published here for the first time was regarded by Lakatos as entirely satisfactory..." Volume 2 contains papers on the philosophy of mathematics, as well as some essays on contemporary philosophers on political and educational matters. He explains, "The Frege-Russell approach aimed to deduce all mathematical truths---with the help of ingenious defintions---from indubitably true logical axioms. It turned out that some of the logical ... axioms were not only not indubitably true but not even consistent. It turned out that the sophisticated second ... axioms---devised to avoid the known paradoxes---even if true, were not indubitably true (and not even indubitably consistent), and that the crucial evidence for them was that classical mathematics might be EXPLAINED---but certainly not PROVED---by them." (Pg. 30)He states, "So we cannot prove in science; the most we can do, if we are anti-inductive empiricists, is to disprove. If, however, we extend our critical attitude to the facts too... we can allow only tentative recognition to basic statements. The Popperian epistemological zipfastener, unlike the zipfastener of logical positivism, is unsuitable even for infallible disproof. It cannot prove and it can disprove only tentatively. As to the heuristic zipfastener, this may start from a reasoned fact... may move upwards through a deductive passage, and then make an inductive jump to the Theory of Gravitation; and then turn back along a purely deductive path, erase the former fact... and so on. There are no absolutely hard, stubborn, perfectly reasoned facts." (Pg. 90)He observes, "But if we start from a proposition P and draw consequences from it rather than try to look for premises from which it follows, then what we objectively do is TEST rather than PROVE. Thus in analysis we test---Popperianwise---a conjecture; but if we FAIL to refute it, we may succeed in turning it first into a proof and then into a mathematical research programme." (Pg. 95-96)He argues, "According to the demarcationist one theory is better than another if it satisfies certain objective criteria. According to the elitist one theory is better than another if the scientific élite prefers it. But then it is vital to know who belongs to the scientific élite. While élitists claim that no universal criteria for appraising scientific achievements are possible they may admit the possibility of universal criteria for deciding whether persons or communities belong to the elite." (Pg. 112-113)He asserts, "where corroborations of two theories are incomparable, so are their reliabilities... We can only judge the reliability of eliminated theories from the vantage point of our present theories... we cannot give even a fallible absolute estimate of Einstein's theory itself before it, in turn, is superseded by another theory. Thus we cannot grade our best available theories for reliability even tentatively, for they are our ultimate standards of the moment. Only God could give us a correct, detailed estimate of the absolute reliability of ALL theories by checking them against HIS blueprint of the universe." (Pg. 185)Though far less well-known than Popper or Thomas Kuhn, Lakatos was one of the most important philosophers of science and mathematics of the 20th century, and his writings are "must reading" for anyone studying the philosophy of science.

Foundations of mathematics. The Hilbert--Russell meta-mathematical programmes were meant to establish the infallibility of mathematics by the Euclidean method: "derive all mathematics from trivial logical principles" (p. 12). Although "From the seventeenth to the twentieth century Euclideanism has been on a great retreat" (p. 10), having failed again and again in numerous branches of knowledge, Russell and others had no doubt that mathematics would be different: "Too often it is said that there is no absolute truth ... Of such scepticism mathematics is a perpetual reproof; for its edifice of truths stands unshakeable ... to all the weapons of doubting cynicism" (p. 14). "We all know how the brief Euclidean 'honeymoon' gave place to 'intellectual sorrow', how the intended logico-trivialization of mathematics degenerated into a sophisticated system, including 'axioms' like that of reducibility, infinity, choice, and also ramified type theory---of on the most complicated conceptual labyrinths a human mind ever invented. ... There even emerged the completely un-Euclidean need for a consistency proof to ensure that the 'trivially true axioms' should not contradict one another. All this and what followed must strike any student of the seventeenth century as a déjà vu: proof had to give way to explanation, ... Euclidean theory to empiricist theory. We also encounter the same refusal to accept the dramatic change", e.g. "Like Newton hoping to explain the Law of Gravitation by principles of Cartesian push-mechanics, Russell hoped for the trivialization of the reducibility axiom" (p. 14). But eventually Russell admitted defeat: "When pure mathematics is organized as a deductive system ... it becomes obvious that, if we are to believe in the truth of pure mathematics, it cannot be solely because we believe in the truth of the set of premisses. Some of the premisses are much less obvious than some of their consequences, and are believed chiefly because of their consequences. ... The only way in which work on mathematical logic throws light on the truth or falsehood of mathematics is by disproving the supposed antinomies. This shows that mathematics may be true. To show that mathematics is true would require other methods and other considerations." (p. 17). Thus logic "is an empiricist theory" like any other, albeit one that is hard to test. "The only way of criticizing this peculiar empiricist theory is, on the face of it, to test it for concistency. This leads us to the Hilbertian circle of ideas." (pp. 19-20). "Gödel's second theorem was a decisive blow to this hope for a Euclidean meta-mathematics. ... consistency proofs have to contain enough sophistication to render the consistency of the theory in which it is carried out dubitable ... For instance, Goldbach's conjecture---that every number is the sum of two primes---might be formally proved to-morrow, but we shall never know that it is true. For it would only be true if meta-mathematics, meta-meta-mathematics ... ad infinitum are consistent. This we shall never know. Gödel's first theorem showed a second way in which a formal theory could misfire: if it has a model at all, it has more models than intended. ... If the Goldbach conjecture is true in its intended interpretation, but false in an unintended one, there will be no formal proof leading to it in any formalization. Gödel's discovery of omega-inconsistent systems was still worse. ... A formalized arithmetic might be consistent, i.e. have models, but none of the models might be the intended one; every model, if containing all the numbers, might contain some other 'class-alien' elements which might provide counterexamples to propositions which are true in the narrower domain of the intended interpretation. In a consistent, but omega-inconsistent system we might prove the negation of the Goldbach conjecture even if the Goldbach conjecture is true." (pp. 20-21). Contemporary logic should not pretend to be the foundations of mathematics. "We read in one of the most competent books written on the subject that the 'ultimate test whether a method is admissible in meta-mathematics must of course be whether it is intuitively convincing.' But why then not stop earlier, why not say that 'the ultimate test whether a method is admissible in arithmetic must of course be whether it is intuitively convincing,' and omit meta-mathematics altogether...?" Or, for that matter, "why on earth have 'ultimate' tests" at all? "Why foundations, if they are admittedly subjective? Why not honestly admit mathematical fallibility, and try to defend the dignity of fallible knowledge from cynical scepticism, rather than delude ourselves that we shall be able to mend invisibly the latest tear in the fabric of our 'ultimate' intuitions?" (p. 23)."The method of analysis--synthesis." A famous "heuristic" in Euclidean geometry was to prove a theorem by assuming it to be true, deriving something known (analysis), and then reversing the steps to obtain a proof (synthesis). This approach was explicated by Pappus, whence it may be called the "Pappusian Circuit" (p. 76). "A main feature of the story of modern scientific method is the critical elaboration of the ancient Pappusian Circuit into the Cartesian Circuit, followed---in spite of some partial successes and several intriguing rescue-operations---by its breakdown" (p. 77). "Both Descartes and Newton were very explicit about the necessity of starting the analysis from facts, from which one proceeded to 'mediate causes' and from there to first principles. They despised those who tried to arrive at first principles with no care for facts, by 'rash anticipation' instead of by laborious analysis" (p. 77), e.g., "Hooke only guessed the inverse square law, but he, Newton, deduced it from Kepler's empirical laws" (p. 80). This is also the meaning of Newton's "Hypothesis non fingo." "Hypotheses have to be embedded in a Cartesian Circuit and thereby cease to be hypotheses" (p. 77). "Descartes's main interest was to find a method of discovery of infallible knowledge, an infallibilist heuristic. The paragon of infalliable knowledge was of course Euclidean Geometry. And the only extant method was of discovery in Euclidean Geometry was the Pappusian Circuit. This was Descartes's natural starting point." (p. 83). "Now my differences with Hintikka's and Remes's rational reconstruction of Greek analysis--synthesis become clear. They base their reconstruction on the assumption that Pappusian analysis was a heuristic pattern in already axiomatized Euclidean Geometry ... In my view the most exciting analyses of Greek Geometry were pre-Euclidean and their role was to generate Euclid's axiomatic system." (p. 100).Criticism of falsificationism. Popper "has refused to notice two [historical] facts: (1) 'Crucial experiments' are frequently listed first as harmless anomalies, rather than refutations ...; and (2) All important theories are born 'refuted'." (p. 201). Further discussion on this is limited to Lakatos' effortless refutations of two minor falsificationists (Agassi and Grünbaum)."Cauchy and the Continuum." Conventional histories claim that Cauchy made several "mistakes" in his Cours d'Analyse, e.g. his proof that the limit function of a convergent series of continuous functions is always continuous. This seems strange, however, because there were already published counterexamples and "today, if one gave Cauchy's false proof to a bright undergraduate, it would not take him long to put it right; and indeed, Seidel [who eventually corrected the proof] did not find the problem at all difficult! What inhibited a whole generation of the best minds from solving an easy problem?" (pp. 46-47). Actually, there is no "mistake", since the alleged counterexamples do not converge in Cauchy's sense, as he himself explained: "His example is the series sin(x)+sin(2x)/2+sin(3x)/3+... He shows that in the neighbourhood of zero where the limit function is discontinuous, 'the value of the remainder for xs very near to zero, for instance for x=1/n where n is a very large number, can differ considerably from zero,'" so that the series does not converge at the "moving point x=1/n" where n goes to infinity (p. 57).

The author introduces the main lines of discussions in epistemeolgy and philosophy of mathematics in a very understandable but comphrehensive way. It is a brilliant reference book for the subject which also contains so-far unpublished articles of the author.

Every since I was a kid, I have always been the shy guy at school. I was afraid to say no and always wanted to please people. I'm now studying in a university and luckily, it became less apparent. Saw this book and ordered a copy. Now I'm a few chapters in and have already been inspired. First few chapters covers how to balance your assertiveness and its effects. Then, it gives ways on how to combat your "YES-man" nature without building unwanted tension and ways to get it your way. So far, I think the techniques and ideas mentioned in the book is effective. However, I still need to apply most of it. Still, the ideas provided so far gave me a better understanding on what to do and how to handle a situation.

Worthless. Nothing new here.

You will never get what you want if you don't speak up and this book helps get that drilled into your head. Passive aggressiveness will get you no where, you need to be able to communicate and express what you want from a given situation. You think you're too nice and can't say "NO" to someone well read this book if you want to change that, it has helped me in a few situations since I've read it. It doesn't make you a bad person to speak up for yourself and assert yourself so I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone willing to make that change.

Definitely a fun read. Like most of Winston Groom's historical works, it's not aimed at historians or buffs of the period or war in question but at the general reading public and on that level it works very well. Certainly,we get strong portraits of the various personalities and very entertaining descriptions of the battle itself. Scholars and other more serious readers though should probably look elsewhere.Certainly Andrew Jackson was not only the man of the hour but probably the best possible man for the occasion, with a deep seated hatred for the British and remarkable determination. But Jean Laffite seems to have been a far more interesting personality and surprisingly devoted to his new nation, especially so given that the government of Lousianna was spending a lot of time and energy trying to prosecute him just prior to the battle. Not to mention the Britsh commander spent a lot of time and energy to recruit him to their side with a very lucrative offer. Andrew and Jean made a very odd couple indeed and it took some time to convince General Jackson could be trusted or had anything to offer. But the book makes it pretty clear it probably would not have gone our way, much to th e surprise of the US public and the British army without Monsieur Laffite, .Interestingly enough, Winston Groom feels strong emotional ties to the battle as one of his ancestors figured prominently in the outcome. His feelings make this a very personal work for him as he makes clear in the book.

If you read the sample, this is a good example of not judging a book by the sample! I was interested in the Battle of New Orleans after finding some family connections to the campaign. This book was priced low enough that I took a chance... after reading the sample which discussed the authors personal connection to the battle I expected to see a book focused on that aspect rather than a general overview of the campaign. With that said, this was exactly to book I was looking for an I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand this battle and the War of 1812 in general and the Battle of New Orleans specifically. It should be noted that the writing is excellent and the author also wrote Forrest Gump and another non-fiction book that was nominated for a Pulitzer.I would recommend that the author extend the sample to include the at least one additional chapter so the sample reader could properly evaluate this book.*Will look harder at the authors other historical non-fiction books.

We took the Steam Boat from New Orleans to Memphis for the Civil War Tour. Being in New Orleans for the first time required taking a tour of the Chalmette Battlefield to be on the site of the greatest American victory overshadowed by the events half a century later in the Civil War. This is the place that restored American esteem after the disastrous defeats of the War of 1812 in the East, save for the defense of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Our history is being lost, as far as I can tell, in the schools our children and grandchildren are now matriculating through. How to instill in them the grand traditions of our Republic and what it took to create and preserve it is becoming an ever more daunting task. This well written book is worth having available. It wasn't just the final day with the one large attack. What faced Andrew Jackson and how the many smaller battles figured into the tactics and heroism on both sides is well worth knowing and noting.

While exploring various angles on the War of 1812, I came upon Winston Groom's Patriotic Fire." Here was a careful examination (and a bit of extrapolation) on the Battle for New Orleans. The MYRIAD ways this confrontation could have gone the other way were presented in an exciting yet highly informative fashion. The battle sequences were exceptionally vivid and graphic, as befits the era. Getting into the heads of Jackson and Lafitte worked quite well here...Mr. Groom certainly did his homework.

An absorbing historical account of the Battle of New Orleans. A shot by shot account of the battle that literally created the UNITED STATES. Written in such a manner that it was really difficult to put it down. Groom delves into the characters of the time; Their personalities, their loyalties, their strengths and weaknesses the indian war with the Creeks. AndrewJackson, Jean Lafitte, Colonel Hinds, Naval ships USS Carolina, USS Louisiana, USS Enterplrise, and all the important characters of the city of New Orleans. Mr. Groom also goes into personalities of the British army (Generals Keane& Pakenham) and Navy (Admiral Cockburn). A facinating story of the events leading up to the final battle, the pirates, the citizens of New Orleans, and the military of the United States. A truly wonderful read.

My appreciation for Winston Groom's books and writing is already a matter of record. That record remains intact with Patriotic Fire. I knew very little about the War of 1812 and other than good time song "Battle of New Orleans" really didn't have much information about how desperate a war it really was. This is an excellent book, written by an excellent author and really was an inspiration to read and learn more. It even inspired me to buy the 1958 movie with Burt Lancaster as General Jackson and Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte.

Very well written account of the Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812).Groom breaths life into a very important, yet little know, episode in American history. He gives each of the major participants a well deserved biography and describes each skirmish and battle in great detail. This is a great work and a very enjoyable read.

This is my third Winston Groom book. Probably my favorite. There was not a slow section. Really recreates the personalities and the battles very well. Andrew Jackson, although controversial, is a fascinatingly complex character. This was well described in this book. For an avid history reader, this book was wonderful. We are coming to the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, so this makes this book all the more relevant. Great job by the author. Look forward to more of his titles.

Abe Lincoln's Hat (Step into Reading)

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-As a young lawyer, Abe Lincoln found that his stovepipe hat came in handy for more than just covering his head. It also served as a good place to keep important papers. Brenner weaves this and other anecdotes about our 16th president into this easy-to-read selection. Watercolor illustrations highlight the sometimes choppy but informative text. Pair with David Adler's A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln (Holiday, 1989) where beginning biographies are in demand.Lesley McKinstry, Findlay-Hancock County Public Library, OHCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 1-3. A far cry from the reverent tone of most children's books on Lincoln, this short, anecdotal biography actually humanizes him. Lincoln is shown as a struggling and somewhat disorganized lawyer who makes his way through goodwill and good sense. The book begins with his purchase of a tall black hat. Later, a group of boys rig up a high wire and knock it off his head, scattering the important papers he kept inside. Courtroom stories include Lincoln proving which man owned a young horse by letting the colt loose to go to its mother and his defense of a slave's right to be granted freedom in Illinois, a free state. Although Brenner includes no source notes, she states that all the stories she relates are true. The humor, lively lines, and soft, shaded colors of Cook's illustrations add to the book's appeal. Since my Kindergartener (age five-and-a-half) had completed the Step 2 books in the Step Into Reading series of books, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Step 3 books. I was a bit hesitant because I noticed there is quite a big leap between the Step 2 and Step 3 books, especially in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. The vocabulary is more advanced with higher order words, and the sentences are longer. I was also concerned that my daughter might not like the topics which seemed to be more 'academic' with history-based stories. My worries were unfounded. She loves the books and is reading them with very little help from me.These books are excellent for building children's reading skills as well as increasing their confidence. Once you've completed the Step 1 and Step 2 books (I would advise proceeding level by level), the Step 3 books are not as daunting as they might first appear. In "Abe Lincoln's Hat", young readers are introduced to our 16th President. There is a lot of background information provided which makes for interesting reading, and it is pitched appropriately for young readers so as not to overwhelm them. The fact that Abe used his tall black hat to keep papers in is an interesting anecdote that had my little one giggling.I can't recommend these books highly enough - they are great for building reading skills, and also educational. This book is a great introduction to history, and I also came up with a series of short comprehension questions based on the story in this book so as to hone my daughter's comprehension skills (e.g. "Where did Abe live?", "What did Abe do with his hat?", "Describe the kind of person Abe was?").

I had this book in my school library and have given at least 5 copies to grand and great grandchildren. They all loved this story about Abe.

This is an interesting story of Abraham Lincoln and his years of being an attorney. It speaks of his character of fairness and to his sometimes disorganization (misplacing important information). Very humanizing and humorous.

The book is a little long for early childhood children and it's a small size book. I thought it would be larger in size.

My first grade class loved this. It has some standard information as well as a more personal side of Abraham Lincoln.

Grandson loves it

Easy to read

These step into reading books are so great for my 7 year old. I love how these books are interesting and fun and he gets to learn a piece of history.
