This book was well written by Mr. Ron Hall, for Denver has gone home to heaven in 2012. Ron did a good job recollecting what Denver had said and what they had gone through during the 10 years of their "adventures" as friends and brothers in Christ.I like the details revealed in this book, even though some of the happenings we have already learned in their previous 2 books ("Same kind of different as me." and "What difference do it make?") but this last book gave us much more details behind what have happened.And most of all, this book gave me a glimpse into the more "human" side of Denver, this dear friend of Ron, Debbie and of God, and shows me clearly that God has been writing this miraculous real story ALL along: showcasing His mercy, grace and power, and that He uses willing Christians, even though they could be as human as everyone else.I thank God for giving us Denver, Ron and Debbie, and I am glad that Debbie and Denver were happily reunited in heaven with the Lord, while Ron and Beth and many other people continue to carry on the torch of Ms. Debbie Hall to facilitate the homeless folks to return to normal lives.I felt so privileged to read this true story, really was engineered and directed by God Himself, and played out by wonderful characters who are willing to listen and follow the Lord's guidance and overcome numerous hardships and hanging onto the strength and grace of God.

After seeing the movie based on the original book, I was interested enough to read this follow-up detailing the friendship of Ron and Denver after Miss Debbie’s death. It wasn’t that well written, but frankly people don’t select this for its literary merit. They are intrigued by the deep faith-based friendship of two such widely different men. Over and over through the book, Ron tells us what a true man of God Denver was, but, I have to say, it was Ron who kept turning the other cheek and forgiving Denver’s destructive behavior. Denver had a lot of personality — he was almost a caricature of an old streetwise bum — but often his poor decisions were really aggravating. If it hadn’t have been for Ron and his money bailing him out, his “skitzy” behavior would have ended the story much sooner. I can’t imagine the cost of all those hospital stays for this uninsured old man.But there is no denying the team of Ron and Denver raised a lot of money for the homeless and their deep friendship is an inspiration.

This was a wonderful behind the scenes story of Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It has been several years since I read their book, Same Kind of Different as Me. So this was a wonderful reminder of the relationship between these two very different men. Ron Hall does a great job of sharing Denver's human side.Denver was an amazing man. I loved some of the things that came out of his mouth. To be unlearned, he would express deep thoughts that take you right to the heart of God's love. I found myself chuckling with tears trickling down my face and then the next moment I would be sitting in my chair in awe of the thoughts Denver expressed.I am so grateful that Miss Debbie opened up the door to a relationship with Denver and allowed us to experience the behind the scene story of love, faith, and mercy. I hope this story will allow others to reach out in a sense of grace and allow themselves to discover relationships that reach beyond their comfort zone.

This is an amazing story. How two people totally opposite of one another became friends is almost unreal. Great book and also bought the movie and bought the second book, Same kind of different as me. Both books are a astounding life of people who happened upon each other.

This book is an amazing story of two men from different worlds brought together by the wishes of a special lady. You must read the first two books. Your heart toward homelessness will be broken and you will see these poor people through Denver and Debbie’s eyes. It was life and heart changing for me.

Great story so glad they shared with the rest of us. You can learn something from everyone in life, just open your heart and your mind to differences.

This book allows you to feel how their adventures challenged their friendship and how they equally strengthened their relationship. It really challenged me to evaluate my own relationships and things I could do to help others.

This book gives so much insight into the plight of the homeless and the rich people who don’t understand. Great true story.

When she shows up and gets a look at her prospective boss she falls in lust. Archer can't believe his eyes when he meets Anthony's sister. After only knowing eachother for a few hours they end up spending a weekend together. The weekend turns into a lifetime. This is a sugary sweet read with no drama. Its so insta love that that's basically the story! I would definitely give it a try to pass the time away. Nothing indepth or shows the characters growing. What a cute couple. Trinna thought that she was set to be a lonely spinster, but with a new job that her brother help her get she has finally found someone who sets her on fire. Archer had no clue that he would react to his friends sister the way he did, but one look at Trinna and he knew that he had to keep her. Luckily the feelings were mutual and these two start a whirlwind relationship. Loved the back and forth between these two, and the interactions between the family members are hilarious. Love this series.

This is the 2nd book of the Gallucci Family Series.Quick, hot, instalove! This couple was fire from the get-go! I enjoyed the love story between these two characters. In true Mk fashion these two fell for each other the moment they met. What ensues is a sexy story of two virgins destined to be together.I also enjoyed all back story with the families. Morgan LLewelyn is a master storyteller, whether it's retelling the greath mythic histories of Ireland, or relating "modern" history through the eyes of fictional characters. If you want to get a sense of what the Easter Rising of 1916 is all about, the events that lead up to it, and the consequences, this is a must-read. By turning historical persona into real people, not just names, the intimacy and immediacy of the time is revealed. By introducing fictional characters, Ms. Llewelyn makes the historical actions more real; you really care about the events depicted. Additionally, you gain an appreciation for the culture of both rural Ireland and the "different country" that is Dublin.

Being American-Irish I began exploring my Irish heritage several years ago. Like so many other things that start out as an addition, the research became a 'task'. The book 1916 caught my eye and after looking it over long enough for the clerk to come over to me and ask if I needed help, I bought 1916 and was hooked immediately. Ms. LLywelyn uses actual facts from history and adds her own genius of storytelling to make her stories a wonderful tale of love, intrigue and magically helps the reader to imagine they are there in that place and time. Lots of history interlaced with fiction and I challenge anyone who reads her series to tell the difference. It's a outstanding series of books and I highly recommend them all.

This book gives you a story plus history of a time when Ireland was rising up to get rid of the British abuse of their poplulation. It is also a fiction in that some of the characters are made up and others are real and lived this history. The front of this book lets you know the real and made of people in this magnificent story of Ireland, the land of my ancestors !

One of my favorite books of all time. I have read it three times and will probably read it again. I wish it was on Kindle then I could just keep reading it. The story is part of a series and though it stands alone very well, you probably will be wanting to read 1921 very quickly. Morgan is a top notch author and I have over 10 of her novels.

I have read the entire series of Irish independence. 1916 starts off the series. It is readable, informative and invaluable. The novel gives a bird's eye view of the people and places involved in the Easter uprising. The next book 1920 is about these same people or at least the ones who have not been murdered during the Irish Civil War. Read them all and absorb the the feelings and thoughts of the people involved in these conflicts. Unless you are well informed about these conflicts you will find many surprises here. The book follows families through these turbulent times. My own grandmother left Ireland in 1920. It was like reading her history.

Very eye-opening as to how the Brits treated their 'subjects.' Scary to think we' have been in the same boat was it not for our Revolution. God unite and save Ireland!

I really liked the very complete historical content of this novel, based on historical content alone I would have given it a strong 4 stars. However, there was just too much superfluous romantic content for my taste. At the risk of being label a sexist, for that very reason I rarely buy a book written by a woman and probably wouldn't have bought this one if I realized the author was a woman. In addition to the romantic content there was another technique that irritated me, but it was necessary to make the romantic angle work. Namely, the book contained way too many coincidentally meetings of people. People seemed to be tripping over people they knew everywhere they went.I'm of mixed minds about whether or not I'll buy the sequels to this book. I assume the author will continue the romantic mode, this for me is be a big factor.Long story short, if you like history AND romance novels you'll love this book; if you don't like romance novels, not so much.

‘1916’ by Morgan Llewellyn is a historical novel with more history than most books of this genre, but both the history and the fiction are well-told. The book climaxes with the 1916 Easter Rising, which is preceded by four years in the life of fictional Ned Halloran and the real and fictional people with whom he comes into contact. They are motivated to implement three historic changes: Irish independence from Great Britain, labor unions and socialism. In this book, the cases for unions and socialism are not strongly advanced. The case for labor unions appears in the author’s poignant descriptions of the difficult working and living conditions of 1916 Dublin. The author seems to make her best case for socialism by having one character make a feeble defense of capitalism in Chapter Twenty-Nine. But the two characters who scoff at this simplistic argument against socialism never make any argument in support of socialism themselves - probably because there aren’t any good ones. On the other hand, Irish independence is the primary change that is being pursued, and the author powerfully describes why the people of Ireland deserve it, want it and need it. These descriptions enable readers to feel a strong connection to those who fought for Irish independence.The culmination of the Rising is portrayed in a poignant way. Readers feel the powerful, conflicting emotions experienced by the leaders of the Rising – pride in the efforts of so many who sacrificed so much and disappointment that more did not join them - initial hope that the Rising would be successful and anguish when it was being overpowered - ultimate hope that the Rising would capture the attention of the English and the Irish and pave the way to future independence and sadness that the leaders would not see it happen.

Pinker argues that humanism (a reasoned commitment to maximizing human flourishing), science, and democracy have resulted in substantial, measurable human progress over the last 500 years. There are 17 chapters setting out evidence (illustrated in some 75 charts) that globally humans are living longer healthier lives (pp. 53-67); developing agricultural methods that are making great strides toward eliminating famine (68-78); increasing per capita income and reducing income inequality (71-120); working on technology and global cooperation to address pressing environmental problems (121-55); decreasing war-related deaths (156-66); increasing safety (167-90); reducing deaths caused by terrorism (191-98); adopting democratic forms of government that promote higher economic growth (200); spreading equal rights (214-32); increasing literacy and the quality of education (247-61); dramatically improving the quality of life (247-61); leading happier lives (262-89); and addressing the existential threats of overpopulation, resource shortages, and the threat of nuclear war (290-321). The book is not triumphalist but consistently evidence-based. I do not have the expertise to assess the details of the evidence Pinker relies on, but he does cite recognized authorities. And some of his conclusions are irrefutable. People are living longer. They are better fed. The rule of law does make people living in democracies safer. Despite some criticism to the contrary, Pinker does recognize that we still have a long way to go in providing food security, a living wage, and better health to some seven hundred million people who still live in extreme poverty (e.g., 87-89; 325). His argument is that we are not wasting money on trying to eliminate world poverty, that we have made substantial progress in reducing the number of people in extreme poverty by getting some things right. Communism has failed, totalitarian, planned economies are in retreat, and market economies coupled with improved agricultural practices and access to global markets have lifted billions out of extreme poverty in the last 75 years (89-96). Pinker argues we should think scientifically, not that we should let science decide value questions (390-91). A scientific approach is based on two characteristics: the world is intelligible and we should allow the world to tell us whether our ideas about it are correct (329-93). We should let the facts on the ground, not our tribal, cultural allegiances, guide us toward policies and practices that help all people flourish (357-69). Many will find Pinker's rejection of religion as a guide to human flourishing (30, 392-94, 421, and 428-33) disquieting, if not repulsing. I don't think that argument is essential to the book's main message. Human flourishing is a goal that all of the many religions that populate the globe can agree with. As Pinker points out, basic moral rules have always been agreed to by all societies. He asserts that two thousand five hundred years ago Plato argued in Euthyphro that the gods are not necessary to tell us what is moral (428). We all know that we should treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves, that we should not cause injury to others, or steal their property. Our religious disagreements are not about morality but prescribed practices, rituals, and theological beliefs. Those conflicts should not get in the way of all of us, whatever our religion beliefs, supporting secular society's goal of promoting human flourishing.

This book is Steven Pinker‘s masterpiece. If you choose just one of his books to read, this is the one. He takes an optimistic view of the current political and social upheavals plaguing our world and puts them in context with both recent and ancient history.In his perfect-pitch prose, Pinker makes the case that although many people decry the times in which we live, he disagrees, in essence saying, “let the good times roll.“ He doesn’t think we’re nearing the end of The Enlightenment, either — he thinks it’s a set of ideas and a way of reasoning that can and should be renewed with each successive generation.He cites numerous statistics showing how people are richer, wealthier, and live longer than any other time in history. There are hundreds of examples that give ample reason for optimism as we navigate this era of confusion and frustration in U.S. and world politics.Enlightenment Now is a long and dense book, but be sure to read it all the way to the end, because all through this masterful narrative of our society, there are some of the most profound paragraphs, pages and chapters I’ve ever read.This is one of my favorite books of all time, perhaps my most favorite. I need a long time to think about and sort out all the ideas in this book. After spending the past month reading and studying it, it’s become clear to me that I need to adjust my point of view on many issues. One thing is certain: I will carry with me the ideas, concepts, and most importantly, the way of thinking that I’ve learned in Enlightenment Now for the rest of my life.

This is an interesting book to review. I've read a lot of reviews of the book before actually reading the book which is fairly rare for me. I usually only read one or two book reviews at most. To be upfront, I personally enjoy Pinker's style, and agreed with him on most of the issues he presented already. I also appreciate that Pinker does a great job of explaining his ideas clearly, in a way that I understand how he came to such an idea, whether or not I actually agree with the reasoning process.For the most part, I have found that the criticisms of Pinker seem less strong after having read the book. Not all criticisms, but many. Pinker's data of some progress for humans is, in totality, certainly hard to argue with. The picture painted is of great progress in the past couple centuries, and it is almost perverse to disagree with this. We certainly still have a long way to go, but Pinker's point that we should appreciate what we've already accomplished is well-taken.Some have taken issue with Pinker's presentation of the Enlightenment. I would certainly agree that Pinker does not provide a strong history of the Enlightenment. On the other hand, Pinker uses the word "Enlightenment" to mean a set of ideas associated with reason, science, and humanism. While I agree this may not be a typical or even historically useful definition, he makes this association clear very early on, so that I don't see it as much of a criticism. He mostly uses Enlightenment for the set of ideas he proposes are important for human flourishing.As I said, I find most of what Pinker says credible, but I think that he sometimes too easily vanquishes an argument. His environmentalism and anti-AI arguments seem to me to defeat the arguments of his opponents a bit too easily. I personally am skeptical of an intelligence boom in AI, but I don't think Pinker argues against the strongest arguments in favor of such an intelligence boom (or the reasons to invest in containing a superintelligence). For the most part, though, I think he fairly represents opponents's arguments in the book where I have some familiarity with the background. It appeared to me he may have painted some environmentalism a bit too negatively, but it seems mostly so that he can embrace neo-environmentalism (i.e., ecomodernism or ecopragmatism)The final part of the book on humanism was also an interesting addition. It is certainly the section with the least number of graphs and data. What stood out most to me here was that Pinker has a very negative opinion of Nietzsche (I don't know enough about Nietzsche to determine how biased a perspective this is).Overall, I enjoyed the book. Pinker is a very clear, concise writer for the most part, and his arguments don't require more than a bit of sense and data to understand. That's not to say that these are obvious or necessarily true arguments, but that the reasons for believing them are laid out for all to see. I don't really see how the idea that we've made a ton of progress in human flourishing in the past couple of centuries could be controversial, but perhaps I just agree too much with the measurements of flourishing that Pinker uses.

About the Author

The Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry was installed as the 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church on November 1, 2015. After this author held my riveted attention during his sermon at the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Princess Meghan recently I bought this book and was not disappointed. His inclusive view of true Christianity represents the Jesus I know and love, and is in stark contrast to much of the mainline stream that has hijacked the name of Christ to lend authenticity and authority to their homophobic, xenophobic, and cultic agenda. This call to follow the example of Jesus is not always easy, and will often run counter to the example of the religious leaders and political powers of our time, but I believe the rewards will be great. Anyone who has been turned off by “Christianity,” but longs to fill the God-shaped hole in their being should read this book and rejoice.

As a 76 year old Episcopalian, all my adult life, I have felt that our last two head bishops forgot about us and appealed to other groups and got away from what being a Christian is.Before someone jumps on me about being prejudiced, one of my direct ancestors was a documented slave from Africa, and we have a sprinkling of Cherokee blood in our ancestors. We have many gay friends and one calls us Mom and Dad. We are not his parents, but he got more support from us before and after he came out, than he did from his parents.The Episcopal Church needs healing and reconciliation and more focus on being a Christian. Bishop Michael Curry points to Jesus and his command to love. This book needs to be read by every Episcopalian.I got this book on Kindle, when Michael became our head bishop. I have read about half of it and have made suggestions to make it the center piece for an adult bible study this fall/winter/spring at our parish. So far, our priest and key lay leaders have agreed with me.As noted, I read half of the book in a couple of days, and I'm saving the rest for later when we start the study group.

As I began reading Crazy Christians, I was not immediately wowed by the Bishop's early chapters. His examples from his grandmother as well as from well known Church leaders and thinkers did stick in my mind. By the time I reached the second half of this short book, I was hooked. A Gospel vision of our lives is a beautiful and radical thing! Michaepl Curry encouraged me to think and behave "outside the box" not in a difficult way, but in one that is natural and an organic extension of myself. It is the way of love for God and for others that can bless others, regardless of their age, race, wealth, political affiliation any other "dividing line'

Bishop Curry presents a clear picture of Galilee and the circumstances of where and how Jesus lived and grew up. Jesus presented God's vision for our world in word and deed. Jesus stood against the corruption and greed of his day and those who wish to follow Jesus must do the same in our day. Jesus and his disciples were always among "the people" and serving others. Evangelism if reaching out to others and not necessarily inviting them into a building. A community of God may have buildings but the focus is always on extending God's compassion and care for all people, in every place and time. What Bishop Curry is speaking about may seem crazy but, after you read it, you may realize that it is the how Jesus was in his time and what we need to do as his followers in our day now.

A good and thorough compendium of the Bishop's sermons. As we anticipate his installation as Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the USA, these sermons give us deep insight to the Bishop's leadership style and where he might take the church. Exciting times ahead!
