My main complaint about this — and I understand that Dover mainly deals in public domain clip art books — is that this reprint of an 1812 book has illustrations taken from murals and vases etc., but does not reference the particular era of the dresses themselves. Also hard to tell how accurate the images (the originals, not the drawings of them) are if they are not from the era themselves.

You have got to love Dover Publishing. They have republished a two hundred year old work by the Anglo/Dutch banker/designer Thomas Hope. As a young man, Hope toured the Continent visiting not only ancient Roman and Greek sites but also many private antiquities collections. He sketched the ancient images of people and the gods. His line sketches remind me of the iconic drawings of scenes from the Iliad produced by his contemporary, John Flaxman. Thomas Hope compliled over 700 these beautifully rendered illustrations and used them in a book published in 1809. I am sure that in the two hundred years since "Ancient Costumes" was published, the study of Greek and Roman costume has made great advances. Nevertheless, Thomas Hope's efforts are the foundation on which the modern study of ancient costumes is based. This a beautiful book published at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

This is a great reference book for making Greek costuming or referencing Greek patterns.

I was really hoping for more illustrations so I could SEE examples of Greek and Roman dress without having to try to imagine it in my head. But it does seem to have good info. Extant examples would have made it a much better pick for me.

This is an outstanding source for me as a theater costume student. It has hundreds of pages of variations on the greek and roman clothing and makes it easy to find options and ideas for design.

This book is great! All the illustrations were beautiful and depicted very accurately. There were even Greek and Roman colum designs, and even Greek chariots designs! There were also ancient Egptian clothing, this book is full of bonuses! :)

This book has beautiful drawings, however, there are no photos in this book so we can't tell what is the artist's assumtion and what isn't. It's like having something third-hand. Someone made an outfit, an artist drew or painted it, the author drew it, and now I'm trying to interpret what the original garment looked like.I really loved some of the ideas I got from this book, however, I don't know how accurate it is.

The reader will experience the stress of riding out a hurricane and the reassurance of being with friends. You might want to have tissues handy as you laugh, cry and worry with the people of Blessings.

I didn't dislike anything about this book. Small town life, in this series is just like visiting old friends. You hear from old friends and lean new things about characters you may have already met. And there is always a great love story! This was also a status review of previous characters (in a small way). I love Sharon Sala's books but this type is my favorite. She makes small town emergencies interesting. I always feel like these are people I could be friends with. The focus of this story is a about a hurricane the impacts the lives of all the people in Blessings. Loved it!

Blessings, Georgia is full of colorful characters, mostly good with a few bad characters. This story continues the adventures of Alice Conroy, her delightful children, and their bloodhound dog, Booger. They meet Dan Amos, a widower, and survive a hurricane together. The Kindle edition includes 5 chapters of the next story in the series, Rainbows Above Us.I couldn't put this story down - it was so good! The Blessings stories are sweeter than some of her Harlequin stories, but Sharon Sala is an auto-buy author for me. You will not be disappointed!!

I always enjoy going back for a visit with the characters of Sharon Sala's Blessings, Georgia series. This book is no different. I can't think of a couple of people who deserve a bit of happiness more than Dan Amos and Alice Conroy. A truly enjoy small-town series.

This book fits right in with the other books in this series so if you are already a fan, you'll most likely enjoy it. If you haven't read the series yet, I would definitely recommend reading the other books first so you will know the characters. As always, Ms. Sala has given us nice story with sweet characters and very little OTT drama. What drama there is always clears up quickly with minimal fuss.

I love the new and improved Solar!! When she walked past Hunter like he didnt affect her not one bit, I was like yeah she's definitely over it. I get where Nahzir was coming from but he couldn't fight his feelings even if he wanted to. I need at least one more book about them. Idk what it could be about but a way to have closure on their story to where the reader isn't left wanting anymore. Book 1 and 2 definitely did that!!

Nahsir really left an impression on Solar and she was out to get him by any means necessary. She let him know that she wanted him and was not going to take no for an answer. Hunter has no chance now because she has gotten the chance to know what a real man is and it’s definitely not him. Love Nahsir and Solar together and would love to read more about them.

Short and Sweet but i need more! I love everything that comes from this author. I can’t wait to see how Nahzir and Solar relationship evolves. I’m glad she knows the difference between what she had with snake Hunter and what she wants with Nahzir! Solar deserves it. Keep the stories coming Grey!

Solar and Nahzir and slowly becoming one of my favs. Nah has used his past experiences to ensure that his next love is his best love. Solar has recently been hurt but is determined to prove to Nah she is ready for something new. I would love to read a full novel about this couple.

Yes i would like more of them and longer also. I love how solar handles Hunter no good ass. He feels small and unwanted as he should. Nahzir belittles him on front of her on purpose so he knows not to mess with him. Solar has that power to draw those guys to her without a problem.

I know it's a short novella but damn that was a tease lol but a good tease. I would definitely like to see more of them bc I can tell they are going ri ve something powerful together. And the way that Solar acknowledged & dismissed Hunter at the same time was priceless.

Just go ahead and write a whole book about Nahzir and Solar because their building relationship is intriguing. Hunter is a cornball. Solar's evolution, with Nahzir's assistance, has to be expanded, give us more.

So short stories are growing on me...and this did not disappoint. As a fan of a good story or full novel of course I want more. But so much was given. Nahzir’s alpha-ness comes through and that is a plus. Solar becoming very sure of herself was refreshing. Can’t wait if there is more!!

To anyone who has read my other reviews on fiction and non-fiction this may be seen as a departure. Personal philosophical contemplation of the big issues—life, death, eternity, etc.—are so subjective that to apply the same kind of critical analysis to them that I would apply to a novel misses the meat of the matter and becomes a stab in the air of Intellect. Just as all books are not created alike, so all reviews of those various books should also not be alike.The anam cara can be found in another person although, whether one finds THE anam cara or AN anam cara in another person or not, there is the presence that travels with the individual from birth to death. An individual’s life span, like the seasons, is a cycle. O’Donohue traces the phases of the cycle throughout the book in explorations of solitude, friendship, love and death. These are all big abstract concepts but O’Donohue brings them inside our eyelids with his intimate, poetic language.Donohue’s contemplation of the large themes is an intimate as poetry and as spiritual as any church service and yet this former priest never preaches. His pleasure in the novelties of creation and his meditations on the threshold of conscious and unconscious existence are contagious. He brought to my awareness a few insights that seem obvious except that I never thought to articulate them but here he has presented them to me.Consider what he says about the human face:“The human face carries mystery and is the exposure of the mystery of the individual life. It is where the private, inner world of a person protrudes into the anonymous world. While the rest of the body is covered, the face is naked. The vulnerability of this nakedness issues a profound invitation for understanding and compassion. The human face is a meeting place of two unknowns: the infinity of the outer world and the unchartered, inner world to which each individual alone has access…Your feet bring your private clay in touch with the ancient, mother clay from which you first emerged. Consequently, your face being at the top of your body signifies the ascent of your clay-life into intimacy and selfhood.”He invokes the cyclical view of life repeatedly. It is inherent in the fact that he was born and died a Celt:“The Celtic mind was never drawn to the single line; it avoided ways of seeing and being that seek satisfaction in certainty. The Celtic mind has a wonderful respect for the mystery of the circle and the spiral. The circle is one of the oldest and most powerful symbols. The world is a circle; the sun and moon are too. Even time itself has a circular nature; the day and the year build to a circle. At its most intimate level so is the life of the individual. The circle never gives itself completely to the eye or to the mind but offers a trusting hospitality to that which is complex and mysterious; it embraces depth and height together. The circle never reduces the mystery to a single direction or preference.”Generally, O’Donohue’s imagery and metaphor is fresh and vibrant although he does use a phrase such as ‘neon consciousness’ or ‘neon awareness’ a bit too frequently for my taste. Once was fresh; more than that the impact is diluted. He also quotes people without citation. He will write, “Dostoevsky said…” or “Goethe said” without providing the specific source of the quote. I don’t doubt O’Donohue; I believe in his integrity. I would just like to read the original for myself to see the context in which the quote appeared.Those are relatively minor quibbles. One of O’Donohue’s great achievements is to shed a fresh light on things we either take for granted or have never articulated. He presents them to us in a novel context, which is really what the best writers do for us.The chapter on death is worth the price of the book for me. It provides the wisest, most consoling, most clear-eyed outlook toward death that I have encountered. He describes the Irish mourning tradition in which women keen and provide a sad liturgy, a ritual for externalizing the loss of the departed. This is followed by the wake:“Its ritual affords the soul plenty of time to take its leave. The soul does not leave the body abruptly; this is a slow leave-taking.”He provides a calm reassurance that assuages any fear of dying that touches me more than most anything else I’ve read about death. He died unexpectedly in his sleep in 2008. The cause of death was not disclosed outside the family. Reading his calming words, I could imagine them echoing through his consciousness in his last moments. His cycle was complete.

I got this book as a gift from a man I had barely met, right in 2005 some weeks after I had been hospitalized with rampant anxiety. He sent it by snail mail, saying he felt I should have it. One of those small miracles. The book was my strength and you have to read it to understand why.John died too soon in 2008 but his spirit is as strong as ever, I feel. A few days ago my mother told me she likely has cancer again. And so I will look for quotes that may strengthen me for the coming time, whatever it may bring. I often find that I start with one that always moved me very much, although I am not sure it is his best known quote:“Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey.”Strange how this particular quote moves me. It makes me feel, as I read it, that Soul exists – that I am Soul. Not just as a concept or metaphor, but something real, yet … undefinable. And that is the power of all of John O’Donohue’s writings.I don't think I can put it better than this. John O'Donohues Anam Cara is an experience. You will have to experience it and see what it can give you. This book is thoughtful but reaches out to your feelings and invites you to reach out for them, too.

As a person of 87% Irish heritage (by Ancestry.com DNA match) and someone who has loved being in that other Celtic land, Scotland, the themes of O'Donohue's book resonate with me. Best is his final chapter on death as one's constant companion through life and on the continuing presence of the departed in our lives -- they are invisible but they are always there. I would recommend this book to anyone of any ethnicity who is struggling with the death of a close loved one. There are harmonies with Native American and West African cultural beliefs here.
