Rating is for copy, not Woolf's story. This is not a real book. This copy is retyped in small font with reduced line space and smashed together. Chapter after chapter appears right after another without even a line break, let alone a page break. Impossible to read for relaxation. Makes your eye hurt.

An essay written in the late 1920s about women's writing. Why wasn't Shakespeare a woman? Why did Jane Austen hide her manuscripts from guests? What makes good writing? What makes women's writing? Are a woman's sentences different from a man's sentences? This book is witty, from the first moment when the author tries to cross the lawn of an Oxbridge college and is stopped by a beadle because only the fellows and scholars (all male) are allowed here. Later she notes wryly that the few women's colleges have no such beadle, and none of the endowments of the men's colleges. What a woman needs in order to write is a room of one's own and five hundred pounds a year. When she wrote, women had only had the vote in Britain for less than a decade, and married women had only been allowed to own their own property for a bare forty years. Women's education is no longer the issue it was when the book was written and it is much easier today for a woman to be independent. Still, A Room of One's Own remains an entertaining read and the issues it raises are by no means resolved.

100 years later, she still inspires great insights into the common heritage of women. In eloquent, often poetic language, mrs Woolf makes us see the world through the eyes of Shakespeare's sister. She makes us see how women's toil has barred women from participating in the learned world. We shall not excuse ourselves for producing our offspring, but with modernity comes the responsibility to seize the opportunity to be educated, writing, productive citizens in more than one way. We shall not let ourselves be ignored or set aside, because our experiences are no less important than those of men. And our experience is the source of a different writing than that of men. Thank you for making me proud of my gender.

I always forget how great Virginia Woolf's writing is. This is an essay noting the absence of women's writing voices throughout history and she makes note that women need a room of their own (which throughout history they have not had being forced to write in common rooms when they wrote) and independent means (which until very recent history women's income was claimed by their husband). Her point being that women need independence if they are to have an independent writing voice.

A Room of One’s Own is of course canonical and hardly needs another recommendation. The almost flippant tone with which Wolff skewers male artistic superiority with arguments while simultaneously refuting the same idea with a style itself ingenious etches in one’s soul the plight of women in the early twentieth century. And, of course, the book is almost a victim of its own success. Few women in Western countries are now dissuaded from having an artistic career. The women’s movement has, so to speak, moved on to demands like equal pay.So I’ll merely point out one perspective which may have been overlooked by some readers. That is, that Woolf’s cause is completely centered around the problems of first world women. Basically, Woolf argues that women do not have the access to the wealth or education that men have and, as a result, have not produced an artistic genius like Shakespeare. Fair enough. But how many women in the period following the First World War were concerned about having an outlet for their creativity? Were not women in many parts of the world so bereft of even their natural human rights so as not to over worry about outlets for creativity? For all its indisputable genius, A Room of One’s Own then may arguably be charged with a mixed legacy. Yes, it highlighted the need for privileged women to be equals of men in their access to the fonts of creativity. But it also may have tended to direct feminism to a first world perspective leaving out the voices of billions of women who Woolf, for all her literary aplomb, does not seem overly concerned about, at least in this work.Literary classic? Undoubtedly. Mixed effect on the direction of twentieth century feminism? A distinct possibility.

One of the best books I read in 2016.She should be one of the most humorous women in Britain at her time. It was supposed to be a speech. Putting a lot of discursive aside, her speech started with Women and Fiction and what she had experienced and what had inspired her about the topic she supposedly gave speech to Newham Girls College. Here main theme, "numerous generations of unsung unnoticed unjusted women paved the way for what women at her era could attain was remarkable, and the girls should fight and stand on their corpses' and souls' behalf", was so strong and so well versed.

This is the first I have ever read of Virginia Woolf. I found it a fascinating read. I came away learning new things and realizing women have felt inferior for a very long time. I hadn't realized this book is one of the beginnings of the feminist movement.

This book is not only an enjoyable and fairly quick read, but it is also an important milestone in not only feminist literature, but literature as a whole. Woolf's amusing and sharp assessments of the way men view women to be inferior, particularly in skill and intellegence, is (at least somewhat) relevent even today. She rightfully stresses the importance of every woman having both a room and money of her own. Without those two things, she can not be truely independant. A must for any lover of feminism or for anyone with a taste for short, smart books.

Wow, the twist and turns in the lives of these people. What ever happened with Janelle and Caleb? I'm assuming they lived happily ever after. Kyle got exactly what he deserved, what a wimp. Kristy got him good but that was oh so wrong the way that she did it. Now she's on her way to find the next big baller, she'd better be careful. I'm glad some of them learned a lesson on the lifestyle that they were living. Enjoyable read.

I love when the sequel answer all of your questions.. It definitely left no stones unturned. Great read, as this is my first series from this author.. 👍🏾👍🏾

Awesome a must read better than 1

I thought this was a pretty good follow up to the first book. I didn't mind that they focused on the other couples from the first book, but I would've liked a little more information on Janelle and Caleb too. It's like they started off as the the main focus after Alan cheated on Janelle, but for this book, they were barely a foot note. At any rate, I enjoyed this read. It didn't pan out in a predictable way either so it was good to have to guess a little on what would happen next.

This book touched on some issues that maybe considered taboo. Swinging. But when you add the factor of friendship it makes the plot a little more fragile and volatile. You think you know your friends and your mate. But you really can't predict how people respond when they get in their feelings. But I am a firm believer in when people show you who they are believe them.

What can I say. Kyle just didn't learn his lesson. Not only did he cheat again but look in Shani face and lied. Pointing the figures at everyone else. Than you fxxk over your own friend and fxxk his girl. Happy Bailee was good but I was with York on them stop swinging but if that made them Happy go for it. Happy Damon was the father and Trinity still got to feel like a mother. Love Love Love this book

This title is perfect for this book! Omg, I was mad and laughing all at the same time. Kristy is a hot mess, she is for real crazy for cocoa puffs. Damon let me just say is the real mvp!! I don't want to give to much away but can you say Facebook live??? Shani I truly admired as a woman for what she did in the end. Such a great read fast paced but full of details. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Wasn't expecting a part 2 but I'm glad that one was written. Kyle and Alan had it all and he lost it all. So happy for Janelle and Caleb still being together. Each swinging couple both had experiences that were unexpected and valuable lessons were learned.

Review

"...pleasingly written and indisputably the single best text on the Ganges and its history." - The Wall Street Journal"Sudipta Sen's Ganges:The Many Pasts of an Indian River invites its reader across the space and time of this iconic riverscape. Through a sweeping yet carefully textured history, the layers of the Ganges's past assume a life that is both consequential and contemporary... Ganges is neither social nor environmental history; it is inseparably both... an invitation to think about all environmental history not only as a story of a changing natural world but also as a story about ourselves." - Science"...an all-encompassing history of the river, its ecologies and the people who have lived alongside it for millenniums... Sen shows how it has played an integral role in shaping the geography, economy and spiritual life of civilization..." - Los Angeles Times"...engrossing and challenging...a glittering current of impressions and eras, a book very much meeting Sen's own description of the goddess Ganga herself: part human, part water."―The Christian Science Monitor

This book isn't just about the river, it's about all the histories, cultures, and practices that have gone into the making of our conception of a geographical landscape.

This book is a bountiful buffet for anyone interested in India, its history and its culture, as expressed through the subject of the Ganges. I recommend the book with one caveat. As quoted in the NY Journal of Books, "very few people will be able to digest the whole book." I want to read it again, but I am not sure that I have the discipline!

The Worlds of a Maasai Warrior: An Autobiography

From the Inside Flap

"The author of Maasai (LJ 10/15/80) now offers his life story: from his birth into a traditional society in Tanzania in 1949, through his youth, education in a mission school, and initiation as a warrior, to his career as a game park guide and ranger (subject of a National Geographic film, Man of the Serengeti); to his studies in Munich and Boston and at the University of Michigan (where he received an M.S. in natural resources), to his return home, to be received back ritually into his family. Although Masai life has been much described, this personal view is particularly interesting. Accessibly presented, this is recommended for area collections and any library where there is interest in culture contact or the black experience."--Elizabeth A. Widenmann, Columbia Univ. Libs.Copyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc.  "An autobiography of a young man whose life to date has spanned the African veldt, the old world of Europe, and the hectic cities of America. We have already run across Saitoti, both in print (as author of Maasai) and on TV (as ""the man from Serengeti"" in the National Geographic documentary of the same name). In both efforts, the author documented the vanishing cultures of the people who inhabit the Great Rift Valley between Kenya and Tanzania. Now, Saitoti tells how he personally faced the challenges brought on by exposure to new ways and cultures. After a slow start, the author picks up the pace as he describes his feelings upon being sent away by his father to school--the only member of his family to be so chosen. . . . All in all, Saitoti's book is as interesting for what it tells us about ourselves as about him. Saitoti is no great writer, but the rare glimpse into a fabled tribe and a collision of cultures is worth enduring craft deficiencies."--Kirkus

I read Tepilit Ole Saitoti's The Worlds of a Maasai Warrior because I was so impressed with several books I read on the life of pygmies. The Maasai is another proud race that is disappearing, trampled by the march of so-called civilization. How other people live in the arms of nature while I'm snug and hidden in my man-made home with my store-bought food amazes me.Tepilit grew up on the African Serengeti, drinking milk for breakfast, herding cows all day, and feeling lucky to have food for dinner. He was happy-content. He didn't feel put upon or less than the city folk in their cars and clothes. He led what we would call a simple life, one which he considered complete, filled with the natural wonder of nature's flora and fauna. Somehow, hard to say how it happened, but he grew to love learning. This passion for education led him to the western world and a Bachelors, then a Masters. I'm not sure if they made him happier-I think not-or if he just changed, became more civilized in a Western sense, with no negative connotations to that observation. The books ends with his plea, "The only key that can now open locked doors is education. The Maasai once resisted education, afraid of losing their children. Now... the Maasai have come to accept it."I didn't realize the Maasai had a reputation as warriors until I read Tepilit's autobiography. When their youth grow to adulthood, they aspire to the warrior class. Not because they fight the enemy anymore, or enter in battle with their foe, but for the same reasons many of our youth join the military. The uniform of a warrior marks the individual as strong and competent, which is a worthy designation for mature males.Overall, I would recommend this to anyone wishing to understand how to be happy in life. Tepilit makes it clear that it's not our western culture or anything that rhymes with 'money' that brings happiness. Rather, it's an intrinsic quality within us, a pride in who we are and from where we came. I wonder how many of us are as lucky as Tepilit Ole Saitoti.

While the author was a child in the 60’s and much has changed in Africa since it is still a compelling look at a culture vastly different from modern America. Colonialism and exploitation for the tourist trade has decimated the Maasai and other indigenous cultures. Their lives were often harsh but also more connected to each other and the land.

Very interesting story of a unique personal journey, with insightful glimpses into Masai culture and thinking along the way. The conclusion left me hanging a bit, though. The author does a great job of delineating the problem, i.e., the need for Masai culture to better adapt to the ever-advancing modernization of East Africa. Other than advocating generally for better education, though, he really does not offer much thought or attention to moving the ball forward. Still, an easy and worthwhile read that left me with greater respect and appreciation for the Masai and provoked further thinking about the challenges they face in the 21st century.

Since I was travelling to Tanzania I wanted to familiarize myself with the culture of one of the largest and strongest tribes in the area. This book did not disappoint. I was even reading it while being in the exact places he described - it was an amazing experience. The book is written well, the story and culture are very interesting, and very true. When I met people of the Maasai tribe, I felt I understood them much better having read this book before hand.

The descriptions of Maasai traditional life were excellent. Reading of the author's impressions of Western culture was also useful as I prepare for my own trip to Africa and anticipate bumping up against my pre-conceived notions of African life. I hope to meet some Maasai warriors and learn about their lives today. I anticipate that this book will support those conversations.

I bought this book in preparation for a trip to Tanzania. It is an excellent view of the life in that area. The things that the author says in this book are exactly what our guide (who was also Maasai) imparted to us. Highly recommended for those interested in the Maasai culture and how it is changing.

There couldn't be two more different places than New York City and the lands of the Maasai in Tanzania. Tepilit Ole Saitoti's story of his journey in and between these two worlds is fascinating. I am looking forward to the update he is writing now that he is a Maasai Elder. This insight into another land and culture is a gift.

I recently visited a Maasai village in Africa and found the book very interesting but also think if he really excelled as he states it was a most unusual situation, not at all like the young Maasai men I met. I found the Maasai to be very special people and I will always treasure my time with them.

I honestly had high hopes for this book based on some of the reviews. However, the recipes in the book are not ones I would use. There are a few - but not many. The educational part of the book is helpful, but I found the Candida Albicans Yeast-Free Cookbook to have better and more recipes to use. I think all of the diets go overboard. Not one doc can seem to agree exactly HOW much to avoid and what to avoid. Some docs do not even believe it is possible to have systemic yeast overgrowth. After being on the diet now for 3 weeks - I can see a difference in how I am feeling. Maybe it is just all the fresh veggies, meat, lack of sugar and junk, no bread that is making me feel a bit better - but whatever it is... I'll take it ;-)If you want to get the book for nutrition info and educational purposes, this IS a good book for that (although I feel a tad strict) - recipes??? Not so much, at least not for us... Plain, bland, and unappetizing

Haha. Not sure what prompted me to buy this. I really wanted a cookbook that laid open flat while cooking. These recipes are so basic and dull. The info is outdated. I did more good reading Dr. Gundry’s plant paradox and removing lectin than anything I ever tried candida related.

This book was recommended by someone so I bought it. It's okay but it offers recipes and meals mostly for a family of four, not for one or two people. Also, the recipes were a bit more complicated with more ingredients than I as a busy person would have time to shop for and even if I did get them, I'd end up with waste which I don't like. I think I got more information from doing a search for candida diets on-line and just reading the information on the web-sites that came up and that was free.

This is an excellent book about Candida, a Must read and very informative type of book on the subject!

Good simple recipes for Candida sufferers

Great things come in small packages thank you so very much this book was so helpful and I have been able to lend it out to several people.

The book was pictures with a spiral spine. That is not what arrived. So, it has a cheaper spine that is subject to falling apart. That is why I bought when i saw the spiral spine because I had a copy that had fallen apart. Disappointed that they are not selling what is pictured.

From Booklist

Pura Belpré Award–winning Tonatiuh (Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote, 2013) makes excellent use of picture-book storytelling to bring attention to the 1947 California ruling against public-school segregation. The concise, informative text, with occasional and always translated Spanish lines, discusses how being banned from enrolling in an Orange County grade school because of her skin tone and Mexican surname inspired Sylvia Mendez’ family to fight for integrated schools. Soon they were joined by many others, including the NAACP and the Japanese American Citizens League, which led to their hard-won victory. Tonatiuh’s multimedia artwork showcases period detail, such as the children’s clothing and the differences between the school facilities, in his unique folk art style. An endnote essay recapping the events, photos of Sylvia and her schools, and a glossary and resource list for further research complete this thorough exploration of an event that is rarely taught. This would be a useful complement to other books about the fight for desegregation, such as Deborah Wiles’ Freedom Summer (2001) or Andrea Davis Pinkney’s Sit-In (2010). Duncan Tonatiuh, in telling this little-known story, has written a really important book - a must-have for school libraries everywhere. The true story of the Mendez family's successful fight against desegregated schools in post-World War II California is a rich source for conversations in the classroom about fairness, justice, prejudice, and historical chapters in our country's checkered past. As a school board member in a highly diverse Northwest suburb of Chicago with a large population of Latino immigrant families, and where more than 60 languages are spoken in the homes of our students, I have successfully read this book in dual-language and general ed classrooms around the district. This picture book has sparked deep, authentic, and brave conversations about race in classrooms with children as young as 8. I will be reading it in junior high classrooms as well in the coming weeks. I would recommend previewing the book starting with the front cover. It's very telling, but not at all surprising, that when asked what's going on in the picture, white children will say things like, "The children are not friends," whereas any brown child will say, "The white kids don't like the other kids," or "The white kids are superior - and I don't know why. They don't like the black kids." It's heartbreaking to hear this out of the mouths of 3rd and 4th graders, but allows children to voice what is their reality in this deeply divided country. And it's a chance to reassure them that light skin color doesn't make anyone superior. Another white 4th grader said, "I wouldn't swim there either if Mexicans aren't allowed to," in response to a picture of a segregated swimming pool. That comment provided an opportunity to talk about how we all can make choices and be counted when we stand up for what is fair. And that led to a conversation about the importance of participating in our democracy by understanding the issues and then voting. Another part of the book mentions Amicus Curiae briefs filed in support of the suit by organizations representing Latinos, Japanese, Jews, and the NAACP. It provides an opportunity to talk about historical discrimination - against the Jews and Japanese during WWII, and of course Blacks throughout US History. I told them about being called anti-semitic names as a young Jewish girl growing up in the 60s and about working at a large corporation that didn't hire Italians or Catholics (never mind Blacks or Jews) in the 1950s and on my very first day of work there in 1981 was "treated" to an antisemitic comment. This broadening of the conversation beyond children with black and brown skin really allowed the children to understand that the issue of fairness is broad-based. One Greek boy asked if Greeks were discriminated against in the past in our country. Knowing my history, I was able to tell him yes, a long time ago. He seemed almost relieved to know that he wasn't left out. Children of this age have such a finely honed sense of fairness, that being included is important to them. Finally, it's the story of a brave family who took on the injustice of a segregated educational system and, through perseverance, succeeded in fully integrating California schools seven years before Brown v The Board of Education, so that not only little Mexican children could go to desegregated schools, but so could all children, whether they be Japanese, Black, Jewish or from any other group. It was clear that the discussion and the responses from the children were reassuring to them all, but most especially to the children with brown skin who learned, if they had any doubt, that their teachers, friends, and classmates are solidly on their side. I cannot thank Duncan Tonatiuh enough for this beautiful, affirming book.

Prior to reading this book, I didn't know that school desegregation started with Mexican-American children. This book tells the story of an important and not well known part of American history. Children will relate to Sylvia Mendez's feelings. I particularly appreciated that the book showed that her parents had to work hard to secure justice for her, and that they didn't give up. Cleverly illustrated. This is a good book for an adult and child to read together and discuss.

I can't say enough about this book. It's amazing and a great book for ANY grade level. And I mean any. The message is important, relevant (about racial discrimination and equal access to education), but it's also a story that is rarely included in history texts. The illustrations are different from what you'd see on typical storybooks, but I have used this in multiple classrooms (I have worked as a teacher in 3-5th grade) and they can be used to encourage even more discussion.Due to the important subject matter and the accessible language used by the author, I could see this book being used for grades K-12 for sure.

Wonderful book! Many of us are really not aware of the plight of the Mexican pioneerswho fought for desegregation! It is part of our history, told with the honesty of the writerwho portrays the emotions and reality of its characters. It is enhanced throughbeautiful illustrations..,that make this story compelling-- both for young readers as well as adults. It allows us to look into the window in the life of a Mexican family and of their determination to bringus the singular opportunity to enjoy the equality of human rights, within the contextof our singular culture. I highly recommend you have a copy of this book in your library!

This is such an important book. What separate and unequal looks and feels like to kids is clear, stark and heartfelt. The reader will clearly understand why this lawsuit was necessary and empathize with the kids and the families who took action in 1947, seven years before Brown v. Board of Education. Kids of all ages should read this book, even those who are above the grade level specified, for insight into the civil rights struggle for people of color. There are lots of discussion opportunities here. There is nothing like this on the market. Bravo!

I love the part about her being an American citizen who spoke perfect English. The law is always going to be a solution for social change. I love the part about change. I love the part about Sylvia's relationship with her father. I thought of the courtroom and law and the legal system and I thought this is such a well-written children's book. I love page 34 so much I wanted to quote the whole page this children's book is excellent!

Every school should have this book and its lessons should be taught in elementary schools and at home. When my attention was drawn to this book and the fact that the desegregation fight began with the Latino community I had to buy this book. I am a lawyer and was a child during the civil rights fight yet I was unaware that the first desegregation victory was not brown vs. board of education. A third grader could read this book him/herself. It is appropriate to read to second graders at the same time black history month is celebrated. It describes how persistent one has to be to attain justice, but that other good citizens will help you, and that justice (sometimes--my edit) will prevail. The artwork is Latino style and the text is straightforward. I am buying 2 copies -- one for each of my upcoming third grade teachers-,in the hopes they will cover this in class. Though we live in a community with a substantial Guatemalan population, the vocal parent have succeeded in excluding Latino-American history from the agenda. I am Caucasian and my children are from Guatemala. And the more things change the more they stay the same.
