Spolier Alert:I really loved this book. What a great way to start a new generation of Warriors under Bramblestar? Don't get me wrong, I loved Firestar. And I loved the Dawn of the Clans series as well. Different generations of cats all connected to each other one way or another. I've read the books from start to finish (The Sun Trail thru The Apprentice's Quest) in order of events on the timeline. And they each beautifully connect the cats to each other. And I have a feeling this new arc will do just that.Alderpaw going on his quest to the Gorge to find SkyClan and only finding the rogues who ran out SkyClan, is just one part of it. I think the next part of the story in book 2 is going to involve the 2 kits Alderpaw and Needlepaw found. The rogues from the gorge are supposed to show up. And you know the Clans won't take that too lightly. And lastly, I have a feeling Hawkwing (SkyClan Deputy) will show up. He is supposed to have his own book that takes place just before the first book of this series. The third book being name The Shattered Sky tells me that it will involve the modern SkyClan cats. And I can't for all of them to be released.I love these books and this one was just as good.

My daughter was hardly a reader before she found this series...she's read the entire series. I bought the first 6 novels as a set and she finished them in less than three days...I was floored because I just assumed she wasn't a reader. Since then, she is a lot more open-minded about books and now reads all the time. I'm forever grateful to Erin Hunter for jump-starting my 10 year old daughter's passion for reading :0)

I've been a Warriors fan for the past five years (as a middle aged cat lady - these books are really for all ages!) This new story arc deals with a ThunderClan apprentice who has an inferiority complex, but also the guidance of StarClan. I found this story more emotional than action- oriented (though there's plenty of that too) and at times, it nearly brought me to tears. I can see I will be getting a hold of the next book in the series as soon as I can!

Honestly, I really like these book series. Though, this one was written nicely and descriptively, [and had parts that made me want to cry forever], I see a few minor concerns. Let's start with the most important and heart breaking one.WhyDidYouEvenDareKillOffSandstorm;-; you shattered meAnyway, it seems as if the book series are repeating themselves.Cat comes in. Cat is not too good. Cat proves them worthy. Cat becomes important by defeating some unknown evil. The end! (That's what I think will happen, anyway.)Other than this, I think it's great so far. I loved most of the characters, and I really hope I don't get spoiled, because so far I am really intrigued and interested.Keep up the good work, Erin Hunter! :)

"Warriors" is a great series, I started reading them when I was in 6th grade, I was about 12 I guess, I am now 18 and I still love this series, it says it is for kids, but it has an adult theme to it, I love almost every character in these books and after "Omen Of The Stars" I didn't think there was going to be another series, but then there was a prequel and again I didn't think there was going to be a continuation of the "main" story line, but there is! God I love these books.

I love this book! It was very well written and I hope Alderpaw helps Twigkit and Violetkit. I also hope they save Skyclan. It's not fair to Firestar and Sandstorm if they don't help Skyclan. All in all, I can't wait for the next book. Great job Erin Hunter!!!! I look forward to reading all your books!!! :D

Finally, I finished reading this and much as I tried to make it last, I finished quickly. I really did love the first in VoS arc even though I was heartbroken Sandstorm passed away along the quest. But at the same time, I get it, the need to make room for new cats because cats being cats, there is always a new litter of kits. I also understand Sandstorm's desire not to die as in elder in her nest, but wanting one last adventure, to do something important. Wise kitty.Questions, observations...** I would like to find out why it was necessary to have Twigkit and Violetkit to be separated, (which by the way, made cry!)** Also why Needlepaw seemed to be cold toward Alderpaw at the full moon gather. I feel something plot-twisty after such a physically and emotionally trying quest as it seemed the two had bonded on the way back home.** Onestar seems to upped his crankiness since the last we all read about him. I'd like him to return the nicer less stereotypical Windclan bad tempered cat, to the way he was pre-leader, Onewhisker self at the end of his life. I just loved him back then!** Where is Ivytail's mate! Vicky, one of the Erin's said Ivytail would get a mate this series.Although book was good, I would have given it a 4 1/2 stars if it were possible. I felt it was rushed, especially the last 10%. Maybe the publishers should have allowed more pages in the book so she could've slowed it down a bit and I didn't get the abrupt ending feel I had. BUT I STILL LOVE THE BOOK LIKE ALL WARRIOR BOOKS. <3

In my opinion this book was ok. First off, it said absolutely nothing about some of the cats like Daisy. I also almost screamed (MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD) when i found out that Dustpelt died. Really! did u have to end a characters life that i have loved and known forever?Secound off, who are all these new cats?? which mother gave birth to them? I have a lot of questions that i am very confused about! I mean could Erin Hunter at least tell us who these cats!! :(.

Review

"Of all the tragedy documented in this book, surely the most pernicious is the unacknowledged progression of discriminatory policies in the American criminal justice system. The black men at the story's center were not snatched out of a Mississippi jail and lynched. They were falsely imprisoned. They were haunted by state efforts to execute them for three decades. This is a powerful and instructive story, masterfully told by Balko and Carrington."―Ibram X. Kendi, National Book Award-winning author of Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America"The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist paints a devastating picture of Mississippi's ongoing systemic abuse of junk evidence by medical examiners and highlights the myriad ways the current legal and political systems reward certain and speedy convictions. This carefully constructed and highly-readable account also reveals the ways in which catastrophic and almost comic expert errors can lead to hasty conclusions, ruined lives, and may take years to correct, if they are corrected at all."―Dahlia Lithwick, Senior Editor, Slate"If, like most Americans, you think that our legal system protects innocent people from being falsely convicted, be prepared to have your faith shattered. In horrifying detail, Radley Balko and Tucker Carrington show how structural racism, junk science, overzealous prosecutors, compliant judges, and a bloodthirsty press conspired to wreck lives and convict the innocent. Grounded in Mississippi courtrooms, but with national implications, this book will leave you outraged and hungry for change."―James Forman, Jr., Professor, Yale Law School and author of Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America"A haunting true-crime tale of systemic incompetence and racism...Balko and Carrington have written a cry for help."―The New York Times"A superb work of investigative reporting....Balko and Carrington combine expertise, industry and outrage into a searing narrative."―Wall Street Journal "A horrifying exposé of how a few individuals can infect an entire state's criminal justice system."―Kirkus Reviews, *Starred Review*"A clear and shocking portrait of the structural failings of the U.S. criminal justice system... This eminently readable book builds a hard-to-ignore case for comprehensive criminal justice reform."―Publishers Weekly, *Starred Review*"Through the intensive scrutiny of how the men were speedily tried, convicted, and then released after years in prison, the authors uncover an unholy alliance of racist cops and prosecutors with questionable death investigations and misapplied forensics. This work should spark both admiration and outrage-and, one hopes, reform."―Booklist

I have had the pleasure to meet Mr. Balko and remainimpressed with his intelligence, commitment to accuracyand truth, and also his drive to protect innocents fromlong-standing structural injustices. This book is a compelling read for many reasons:It is extremely well-researched with footnotes abounding. It is shocking as one realizes that fact can indeed bestranger and too often more horrible than fiction. It tells stories which should never be repeated again ina modern just society. It compels anyone with a conscience to take actions toinsure these sorts of things stop and are not repeated. The Lord compels us to “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression;bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”(Isaiah 1:17)Mr. Balko and Mr. Carrington are definitely "on a mission from God" as they help us to seek justiceand correct oppression.Mission (Being) Accomplished! Well-done!I would urge anyone with a conscienceand a shred of human decency toread this book....and then....to share it with family and friends.

The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist is by turns engaging, depressing, exciting, and enraging—and a monumental work of investigative storytelling about how junk science polluted justice for a generation in one state. In the hands of lesser writers, this would have simply been a story of good and evil, of heroes and villains. But Balko and Carrington paint a much more nuanced picture, an almost Southern gothic tale. While the titular physician and dentist are exposed for the quacks and frauds they are, the system in which they operated isn't cast as a simple morality tale. Path dependency in the common law (the coroner being an office that traces back to medieval England), the ghosts of the Civil War and Jim Crow, well-intended US Supreme Court decisions, and political factionalism combine to set the stage for a generation-long fraud on the people of Mississippi. Most of all, Balko and Carrington highlight the terrible incentives facing everyone in the state's death investigation and criminal justice system, telling stories of justice gone horribly wrong.Balko and Carrington have penned a gripping page-turner of an expose that shows both the best and the worst of mankind, and the power of institutions to look past and even condone the morally indefensible. "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" is a cry for reform, not just in Mississippi, but in courts and capitols across the country.

Unfair. Out of control. Corrupt. A travesty of American justice. Venal. Self-serving. These descriptors barely carve a small chip off the surface of the list of infractions committed by and under the aegis of the US judicial system. The extent of the rot eating at the base of the already rotten legal edifice is - for those that still believe in the concept of "rule of law" and impartial, reasoned, balanced application of impartial, reasoned and balanced laws - almost beyond cataloguing. So instead, Balko and Carrington have selected one little microcosm from a very broad potential palette of connivance, and warped, perverted, distorted applications of pseudo-science and presented it in a concise, interesting and valuable book. Stories chosen from a veritable rogues' gallery of distilled garbage issuing forth from an imaginative "Chuckie" of the dental profession (Michael West) and a blood-sucking barber-surgeon cum pathologist, Steven West, aided by prosecutors and DAs, "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" illustrate the enormity of the problem.By this point in 21st century America, only the most inveterate optimist or intellectually besotted citizen could imagine that the legislative, judicial and enforcement bodies in this country maintain any reasonable degree of fealty to the ideal presented to the general public. The arc of destiny may bend toward justice, but it will evidently only converge with it in another space-time continuum. The corruption of our democratic ideals may have reached it's apex with the election of Donald Trump to the presidency, but it most certainly didn't begin in 2016. Balko and Carrington take care to describe the history of ,and oftentimes muddled distinction between, a coroner (an elected and not necessarily medically qualified and/or competent official) and a board certified physician expert in medical forensics. That's a core distinction and serious problem featured in this book. The plot line in "The Cadaver King and the Country Dentist" is constructed on the stories of two black men of the "lower classes" in rural Mississippi. Lest the reader think that the judicial and law enforcement rush to judgement (one based on prejudice, racism, convenience, and expediency - all buttressed with bogus claims on the uniqueness of bite marks and assembly line quality, dry-lab, slipshod, negligent autopsies proffered by avaricious, egomaniacal snake oil salesmen, Drs. West and Hayne) is confined to benighted rural pockets of the Deep South, consider the famous case of Steven Avery, a white man from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Avery served 18 years in prison on a wrongful conviction for sexual assault and attempted murder. He was fully exonerated by DNA evidence, as was also (eventually) the case for the men featured in this book. Seeking restitution (if that's even possible), Avery took legal action against the county. Not to be outdone, law enforcement pulled a Trump and counter-attacked: in 2005, Avery was arrested on charges of murdering a local photographer and was convicted in 2007. It was a frame-up relying in large part on pseudo-scienc, just like the multiple false convictions in Mississippi and elsewhere. Take it as a given that the Great Panjandrum propelling the cases in "Cadaver King" (the distinguished Mr. Hood) has yet to acknowledge either his own perfidy and his manifest and deliberate ignorance of his responsibilities as an attorney general (and he's a Democrat!)What Balko/Carrington and Ricciardi/Demos and many, many others convincingly convey is that this is a "world gone wrong". The fact that no meaningful changes have occurred despite intense publicity conveys the fact that those who write the laws and those that enforce them don't care about the perversions of justice they perpetuate, nor do they seemingly grasp that the two-tiered judicial system (you get the best justice your money can buy) is untenable. That conclusion is made explicit in the book and in Balko's many columns in "The Washington Post". He and other investigative journalists, concerned lawyers (there are a few) and a few "folks" are fighting a quixotic battle against "people bending broken rules" (Bob Dylan's phrase). Even the recent involvement of the formidable Koch organization in sentencing reform has hit the impenetrable Van Allen Belt of highly energized, reactionary, corporatist and fear-fueled populist opposition. The Balko/Carrington book is very well written and comprehensively referenced, especially as the Charlatan Kings are extremely litigious. So, every claim must be (and has been) carefully researched and referenced. The glaring problem with the book is the absence of an index. A bit more could be offered on the dubious legal background (e.g., the Frye decision) that allows introduction of non-science nonsense as alleged fact. As noted by the authors, leaving this decision to the judicial system (current practice) begs for the type of abuse detailed in this book and assures its continuation into the indefinite future. In other words, many more innocents will be incarcerated and many more "game over" decisions will be made by the ossified and self-important judicial mandarin "deciders". In short, many falsely convicted citizens will rot in jail because that's the system. As it happens, the constellation of forces favoring swift, "certain", retributive punishment is in ascendance. Efforts by Balko and company appeal to the converted: can you imagine enough open minded legislators and members of the legal/judicial/enforcment professions taking on a system that so many of them profit from? Unlike the legions of falsely convicted and later redeemed heroes of 19th century novels, swashbuckling crusaders for justice aren't on the near horizon. It will take a case of a truly monstrous nature suffered by a popular "People Magazine" cover star (Jay-Z?) to focus public attention on the problem. For everyone else, the Twilight of the Idols may be quickly converging on a legal and social Götterdämmerung

Great book, layout is concise and informative, can't wait to try it out on my trip to Denver.

Great book

We found this very helpful after moving to Colorado. Yes, there's information like this for free on the Internet, but we've made a few notes in the margins regarding how dog-friendly some of the places are and about how much parking costs. We're sure to stay busy with weekend trips for a long time!

Saw Alan Apt at a discussion on winter sport trails and this book was offered as it's his most recent book/edition. In the preface it highlights that there are 108 trails suitable for winter sports yet those trails are not listed or indexed, making it difficult to identify winter sport trails. There are two sections where this information should have been added. The first is in the front of the book, in the "Overview of Hikes" chart, with summary information regarding each hike. The second area I expected to find this information was in "Appendix 1: Best Trails For..." but again, winter sports were not mentioned. Since I bought this book primarily for winter sports I was disappointed. I will add, however, that it looks like a fantastic book for those wishing to use area trails late spring through early fall.

This is a very comprehensive hiking and biking book with 184 spectacular outings.Apt has a new book for snow sports called Ski and Snowshoe Routes, Colorado's Front Range (CMC Press) out this fall. His previously snow trails book was Snowshoe Routes, Colorado's Front Range, (CMC Press) and is a best seller.

Rating is for copy, not Woolf's story. This is not a real book. This copy is retyped in small font with reduced line space and smashed together. Chapter after chapter appears right after another without even a line break, let alone a page break. Impossible to read for relaxation. Makes your eye hurt.

An essay written in the late 1920s about women's writing. Why wasn't Shakespeare a woman? Why did Jane Austen hide her manuscripts from guests? What makes good writing? What makes women's writing? Are a woman's sentences different from a man's sentences? This book is witty, from the first moment when the author tries to cross the lawn of an Oxbridge college and is stopped by a beadle because only the fellows and scholars (all male) are allowed here. Later she notes wryly that the few women's colleges have no such beadle, and none of the endowments of the men's colleges. What a woman needs in order to write is a room of one's own and five hundred pounds a year. When she wrote, women had only had the vote in Britain for less than a decade, and married women had only been allowed to own their own property for a bare forty years. Women's education is no longer the issue it was when the book was written and it is much easier today for a woman to be independent. Still, A Room of One's Own remains an entertaining read and the issues it raises are by no means resolved.

100 years later, she still inspires great insights into the common heritage of women. In eloquent, often poetic language, mrs Woolf makes us see the world through the eyes of Shakespeare's sister. She makes us see how women's toil has barred women from participating in the learned world. We shall not excuse ourselves for producing our offspring, but with modernity comes the responsibility to seize the opportunity to be educated, writing, productive citizens in more than one way. We shall not let ourselves be ignored or set aside, because our experiences are no less important than those of men. And our experience is the source of a different writing than that of men. Thank you for making me proud of my gender.

I always forget how great Virginia Woolf's writing is. This is an essay noting the absence of women's writing voices throughout history and she makes note that women need a room of their own (which throughout history they have not had being forced to write in common rooms when they wrote) and independent means (which until very recent history women's income was claimed by their husband). Her point being that women need independence if they are to have an independent writing voice.

A Room of One’s Own is of course canonical and hardly needs another recommendation. The almost flippant tone with which Wolff skewers male artistic superiority with arguments while simultaneously refuting the same idea with a style itself ingenious etches in one’s soul the plight of women in the early twentieth century. And, of course, the book is almost a victim of its own success. Few women in Western countries are now dissuaded from having an artistic career. The women’s movement has, so to speak, moved on to demands like equal pay.So I’ll merely point out one perspective which may have been overlooked by some readers. That is, that Woolf’s cause is completely centered around the problems of first world women. Basically, Woolf argues that women do not have the access to the wealth or education that men have and, as a result, have not produced an artistic genius like Shakespeare. Fair enough. But how many women in the period following the First World War were concerned about having an outlet for their creativity? Were not women in many parts of the world so bereft of even their natural human rights so as not to over worry about outlets for creativity? For all its indisputable genius, A Room of One’s Own then may arguably be charged with a mixed legacy. Yes, it highlighted the need for privileged women to be equals of men in their access to the fonts of creativity. But it also may have tended to direct feminism to a first world perspective leaving out the voices of billions of women who Woolf, for all her literary aplomb, does not seem overly concerned about, at least in this work.Literary classic? Undoubtedly. Mixed effect on the direction of twentieth century feminism? A distinct possibility.

One of the best books I read in 2016.She should be one of the most humorous women in Britain at her time. It was supposed to be a speech. Putting a lot of discursive aside, her speech started with Women and Fiction and what she had experienced and what had inspired her about the topic she supposedly gave speech to Newham Girls College. Here main theme, "numerous generations of unsung unnoticed unjusted women paved the way for what women at her era could attain was remarkable, and the girls should fight and stand on their corpses' and souls' behalf", was so strong and so well versed.

This is the first I have ever read of Virginia Woolf. I found it a fascinating read. I came away learning new things and realizing women have felt inferior for a very long time. I hadn't realized this book is one of the beginnings of the feminist movement.

This book is not only an enjoyable and fairly quick read, but it is also an important milestone in not only feminist literature, but literature as a whole. Woolf's amusing and sharp assessments of the way men view women to be inferior, particularly in skill and intellegence, is (at least somewhat) relevent even today. She rightfully stresses the importance of every woman having both a room and money of her own. Without those two things, she can not be truely independant. A must for any lover of feminism or for anyone with a taste for short, smart books.

Wow, the twist and turns in the lives of these people. What ever happened with Janelle and Caleb? I'm assuming they lived happily ever after. Kyle got exactly what he deserved, what a wimp. Kristy got him good but that was oh so wrong the way that she did it. Now she's on her way to find the next big baller, she'd better be careful. I'm glad some of them learned a lesson on the lifestyle that they were living. Enjoyable read.

I love when the sequel answer all of your questions.. It definitely left no stones unturned. Great read, as this is my first series from this author.. 👍🏾👍🏾

Awesome a must read better than 1

I thought this was a pretty good follow up to the first book. I didn't mind that they focused on the other couples from the first book, but I would've liked a little more information on Janelle and Caleb too. It's like they started off as the the main focus after Alan cheated on Janelle, but for this book, they were barely a foot note. At any rate, I enjoyed this read. It didn't pan out in a predictable way either so it was good to have to guess a little on what would happen next.

This book touched on some issues that maybe considered taboo. Swinging. But when you add the factor of friendship it makes the plot a little more fragile and volatile. You think you know your friends and your mate. But you really can't predict how people respond when they get in their feelings. But I am a firm believer in when people show you who they are believe them.

What can I say. Kyle just didn't learn his lesson. Not only did he cheat again but look in Shani face and lied. Pointing the figures at everyone else. Than you fxxk over your own friend and fxxk his girl. Happy Bailee was good but I was with York on them stop swinging but if that made them Happy go for it. Happy Damon was the father and Trinity still got to feel like a mother. Love Love Love this book

This title is perfect for this book! Omg, I was mad and laughing all at the same time. Kristy is a hot mess, she is for real crazy for cocoa puffs. Damon let me just say is the real mvp!! I don't want to give to much away but can you say Facebook live??? Shani I truly admired as a woman for what she did in the end. Such a great read fast paced but full of details. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Wasn't expecting a part 2 but I'm glad that one was written. Kyle and Alan had it all and he lost it all. So happy for Janelle and Caleb still being together. Each swinging couple both had experiences that were unexpected and valuable lessons were learned.

Review

"...pleasingly written and indisputably the single best text on the Ganges and its history." - The Wall Street Journal"Sudipta Sen's Ganges:The Many Pasts of an Indian River invites its reader across the space and time of this iconic riverscape. Through a sweeping yet carefully textured history, the layers of the Ganges's past assume a life that is both consequential and contemporary... Ganges is neither social nor environmental history; it is inseparably both... an invitation to think about all environmental history not only as a story of a changing natural world but also as a story about ourselves." - Science"...an all-encompassing history of the river, its ecologies and the people who have lived alongside it for millenniums... Sen shows how it has played an integral role in shaping the geography, economy and spiritual life of civilization..." - Los Angeles Times"...engrossing and challenging...a glittering current of impressions and eras, a book very much meeting Sen's own description of the goddess Ganga herself: part human, part water."―The Christian Science Monitor

This book isn't just about the river, it's about all the histories, cultures, and practices that have gone into the making of our conception of a geographical landscape.

This book is a bountiful buffet for anyone interested in India, its history and its culture, as expressed through the subject of the Ganges. I recommend the book with one caveat. As quoted in the NY Journal of Books, "very few people will be able to digest the whole book." I want to read it again, but I am not sure that I have the discipline!

The Worlds of a Maasai Warrior: An Autobiography

From the Inside Flap

"The author of Maasai (LJ 10/15/80) now offers his life story: from his birth into a traditional society in Tanzania in 1949, through his youth, education in a mission school, and initiation as a warrior, to his career as a game park guide and ranger (subject of a National Geographic film, Man of the Serengeti); to his studies in Munich and Boston and at the University of Michigan (where he received an M.S. in natural resources), to his return home, to be received back ritually into his family. Although Masai life has been much described, this personal view is particularly interesting. Accessibly presented, this is recommended for area collections and any library where there is interest in culture contact or the black experience."--Elizabeth A. Widenmann, Columbia Univ. Libs.Copyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc.  "An autobiography of a young man whose life to date has spanned the African veldt, the old world of Europe, and the hectic cities of America. We have already run across Saitoti, both in print (as author of Maasai) and on TV (as ""the man from Serengeti"" in the National Geographic documentary of the same name). In both efforts, the author documented the vanishing cultures of the people who inhabit the Great Rift Valley between Kenya and Tanzania. Now, Saitoti tells how he personally faced the challenges brought on by exposure to new ways and cultures. After a slow start, the author picks up the pace as he describes his feelings upon being sent away by his father to school--the only member of his family to be so chosen. . . . All in all, Saitoti's book is as interesting for what it tells us about ourselves as about him. Saitoti is no great writer, but the rare glimpse into a fabled tribe and a collision of cultures is worth enduring craft deficiencies."--Kirkus

I read Tepilit Ole Saitoti's The Worlds of a Maasai Warrior because I was so impressed with several books I read on the life of pygmies. The Maasai is another proud race that is disappearing, trampled by the march of so-called civilization. How other people live in the arms of nature while I'm snug and hidden in my man-made home with my store-bought food amazes me.Tepilit grew up on the African Serengeti, drinking milk for breakfast, herding cows all day, and feeling lucky to have food for dinner. He was happy-content. He didn't feel put upon or less than the city folk in their cars and clothes. He led what we would call a simple life, one which he considered complete, filled with the natural wonder of nature's flora and fauna. Somehow, hard to say how it happened, but he grew to love learning. This passion for education led him to the western world and a Bachelors, then a Masters. I'm not sure if they made him happier-I think not-or if he just changed, became more civilized in a Western sense, with no negative connotations to that observation. The books ends with his plea, "The only key that can now open locked doors is education. The Maasai once resisted education, afraid of losing their children. Now... the Maasai have come to accept it."I didn't realize the Maasai had a reputation as warriors until I read Tepilit's autobiography. When their youth grow to adulthood, they aspire to the warrior class. Not because they fight the enemy anymore, or enter in battle with their foe, but for the same reasons many of our youth join the military. The uniform of a warrior marks the individual as strong and competent, which is a worthy designation for mature males.Overall, I would recommend this to anyone wishing to understand how to be happy in life. Tepilit makes it clear that it's not our western culture or anything that rhymes with 'money' that brings happiness. Rather, it's an intrinsic quality within us, a pride in who we are and from where we came. I wonder how many of us are as lucky as Tepilit Ole Saitoti.

While the author was a child in the 60’s and much has changed in Africa since it is still a compelling look at a culture vastly different from modern America. Colonialism and exploitation for the tourist trade has decimated the Maasai and other indigenous cultures. Their lives were often harsh but also more connected to each other and the land.

Very interesting story of a unique personal journey, with insightful glimpses into Masai culture and thinking along the way. The conclusion left me hanging a bit, though. The author does a great job of delineating the problem, i.e., the need for Masai culture to better adapt to the ever-advancing modernization of East Africa. Other than advocating generally for better education, though, he really does not offer much thought or attention to moving the ball forward. Still, an easy and worthwhile read that left me with greater respect and appreciation for the Masai and provoked further thinking about the challenges they face in the 21st century.

Since I was travelling to Tanzania I wanted to familiarize myself with the culture of one of the largest and strongest tribes in the area. This book did not disappoint. I was even reading it while being in the exact places he described - it was an amazing experience. The book is written well, the story and culture are very interesting, and very true. When I met people of the Maasai tribe, I felt I understood them much better having read this book before hand.

The descriptions of Maasai traditional life were excellent. Reading of the author's impressions of Western culture was also useful as I prepare for my own trip to Africa and anticipate bumping up against my pre-conceived notions of African life. I hope to meet some Maasai warriors and learn about their lives today. I anticipate that this book will support those conversations.

I bought this book in preparation for a trip to Tanzania. It is an excellent view of the life in that area. The things that the author says in this book are exactly what our guide (who was also Maasai) imparted to us. Highly recommended for those interested in the Maasai culture and how it is changing.

There couldn't be two more different places than New York City and the lands of the Maasai in Tanzania. Tepilit Ole Saitoti's story of his journey in and between these two worlds is fascinating. I am looking forward to the update he is writing now that he is a Maasai Elder. This insight into another land and culture is a gift.

I recently visited a Maasai village in Africa and found the book very interesting but also think if he really excelled as he states it was a most unusual situation, not at all like the young Maasai men I met. I found the Maasai to be very special people and I will always treasure my time with them.
