Only thing better than a great book for school is a great teacher! She picked out a winner!

The organization of this book is done poorly. My professor barely knew what he was teaching which means he needed a better book too! no outlines no chapter reviews. Nothing. I would not recommend this book to anyone, The subject is interesting but this book does not teach it well.

It gets the job done and a lot of the experiments are really fun and interesting to read about. The wording and the wording on the descriptions can be hard to understand at times though.

Is written under the assumption that whoever is reading knows about the topic, so not a good book for beginners. Not a good text book for beginners.

The back of this book rattles off praise for this book by eminent researchers in the field of comparative psychology. But I fear this praise is due more to a "if you scratch my back then I will scratch yours" type of effect. To get to the point quicker here are some of the pros and cons I noted when reading this book for my psych class:Pros:-Book is organized well.-Plenty of coloured pictures.-In paperbackCons:-Descriptions of many of the experiments are too vague in many cases.-Certain major theories are ignored. (e.g. Groves and Thompson Dual-Process Theory of Habituation and Sensitization is not talked about. Also, the precise (and observable) Nobel Prize winning biological processes involved in habituation, sensitization, and classical conditioning, which were demonstrated by Kandel in his experiments with the Aplysia, are not appealed to.)-He misquotes Skinner and as a consequence accuses Operant Theory of being circular when it is in fact not. Operant Theory can only be considered circular when its specific terms are applied incorrectly. Considering Pearce's status in the field this is a very surprising mistake.-He is not up-to-date on hippocampal place cell research.-Emphasis is put on cognitive factors and not on neurological factors, which is unfortunate given the huge amount of neurological research done with animals.-Pearce tends to, whether he is aware of it or not, anthropomorphise, but he hides it behind sophisticated terminology frequently used by cognitive psychologists.-There seems to be a overly strong preference (bias perhaps?) for research by Rescorla, Wagner, and Pearce.-There is no glossary provided at the end of the book.-There is no study guide/workbook (or study questions for that matter) to accompany the text.-The pages are glossy and reflect light. No doubt the 'necessity' for color photography is to blame for this.-The book is too expensive. (I would gladly sacrifice a few color photographs and more fragile paper for a reduced price).All in all I think a better book could have been written and manufactured.

Maybe the author really knows his stuff and just has trouble communicating his knowledge. It's impossible to tell because his writing and explanations are muddled, vague, confusing, and rambling. This was truly one of the most poorly written texts I've ever had to use for a class and it's a shame because the subject matter is so interesting. Perhaps he should have hired a ghost writer.

Got it for class. It's a tolerable read for now, but I must confess I haven't given this book a fair shake since I am undecided about the course. Depending on my final grade, my final rating can go either way.

This is a great introductory textbook to animal learning. The author uses lots of pictures, graphs, and in-depth discussions to help the reader understand the material.The only thing this book lacks is a chapter on Instrumental learning. If you are a teacher, you should provide an additional book to go over schedules of reinforcement.

I used this book as part of many books I purchased for my Post Graduate Diploma in Islamic Banking and Finance. This book is published by Financial Times so I was expecting a good book. What I received was a book that was a very high level of the aforementioned subject. It was often sparse, very sparse in detail and missing many diagrams to help you understand. It is also a short book.I CANNOT recommend this book for serious study or just to simply understand Islamic Banking and Finance. Believe it or not "Islamic Finance for Dummies" was by and far the most superior book of all I purchased. Save some money and get the Dummies book. Just take a look at who wrote it. I have it and he knows what he is talking about. My examination scores prove that :)

This book was much too long. I thought the letters between the two main characters were not conducive to the story. I've read all the former books of this tale but this one was a disappointment.

I have really gotten hooked on this series! At first, I thought it was a bit too preachy, but I feel I have done some soul searching as a result, so I think it's been valuable. If you're looking at this book, be sure to read the others that came before!

Great book, just as described

I bought this book, because I was reading the series and our library did not have it. All of Michael Phillips books do a grfeat job of combining story with Biblical truth in a way that makes you examine your relationship with God. This one really goes to a whole new level as it focuses on what is truly important for marriage. Sometimes it gets a little too deep.

It was along time ago that I read this but it was great.

It has the power to silence any device and disturbance as you truly have a synesthetic experience while going through it. I truly admire this artist who presents beauty in such an unconventional yet effortless manner and he does so through nature, the most beautiful and vast database of beauty. Morning Altars makes you breathe nature and for me it promotes such a wonderful and important virtue: patience. The artist, on his knees, putting elements together, leaf by leaf, stone by stone, petal by petal, recalls the calmness and stillness of a child who on his knees puts his thoughts in order while making art on the floor. That warms my heart. I will definitely treasure this book and will make good use of it, especially when I feel lost and crave nature and have none around me. Congratulations to the artist.

This is an amazing psychological study of a modern tragedy, where completely corrupt and hypocritical political and corporate establishments throw a decent, if flawed man under the bus for no reason other to make themselves look good. Tom Hayes is a very talented man, who is on the autism spectrum (many of us in academia and quantitative finance are, he is somewhat further along the spectrum than many), who did not obviously commit any crime (moving the benchmark within the acceptable range was not a crime at the time, and how could he be guilty of collusion, if no one is guilty of colluding with him?), though obviously some of the things he did were in the gray area. I have enormous respect for Hayes' courage in pleading not guilty to the charges - this shows true character. For someone who has been around in the academic and financial spheres, the book rings very true - the hypocrisy and sanctimony ("we are shocked, shocked, that gambling goes on in here") is pretty much par for the course.

I love books about business crimes, and this one is a good one. The saga of Tom Hayes, an obsessive and presumably brilliant trader who was a key player in the manipulation of Libor, is intriguing, surprising, galling and sad. Hayes unquestionably did bad things, and his apparent blindness to the ethical implications of his actions is galling, and in that sense he deserves what he got. On the other hand, he was clearly a social misfit (with Asperger's) who may not have understood those implications, and so many others, including his superiors, got off scot-free, is galling, and very sad.Enrich writes well, and the book holds one's interest throughout. So why not five stars? First, Enrich clearly engaged in extensive -- possibly excessive -- research, and like other non-fiction writers he has a tendency to cram in every fact he came across in his research, many of which are totally extraneous to the story. He introduces characters that don't need to be introduced, and he dwells on one or two characteristics to make them stand out, as if that justifies their presence in the story --- but it doesn't. (One example is the introduction of a character who seems to be particularly hairy; Enrich goes out of his way to bring the character back at the end of the book, even pointing out that he changed his nickname. Why is that necessary?)The other failing of the book is that Enrich comes close -- possibly over the line -- in terms of his sympathy for Hayes. He clearly feels that Hayes got a raw deal, but his sympathy for his main character made me wonder if he was not being sufficiently objective and glossed over facts that would have made Hayes look worse.Still, an interesting read that is well done.

It is scary to read about the fragile governance of Libor by the British government and even more reckless tempering of the lynchpin parameter of world finance by major banks. How a genius but emotionally unbalanced trader paid for the collective guilt and lack of government accountability comes alive through every page. My heart reaches out to his family. Don't the most innocent pay the biggest price?

Fantastic storytelling and a great read! The author avoids too much focus on market jargon and technical details and paints a terrific picture of the people involved from junior traders to CFTC investigators. It almost reads like a novel even though everything is exhaustively researched and based on a strong relationship with many sources including the protagonist himself, Tom Hayes.
