Davidson takes the reader behind the scenes of Dubai. Roughly a third of the book is about the history of the UAE. The rest of the book covers such topics as economic diversification, organized crime, and the challenge of developing a federalist mentality.If there is a theme to the book, it is the dilemma of the "rentier pathology." In this term, Davidson is referring to a citizenry who are, in a word, spoiled. If they have jobs at all, they are no-show sinecures in the public sector. Many of these citizens have never had to work, have never had to pay taxes, and depend on imported temporary workers to do the grunt work. Such largess has allowed the emir to maintain power as an absolute monarch, but can this arrangement survive an economic downturn?Davidson is appropriately critical of the Dubai monarchy without being sensationalist. There are times when the professorial tone becomes annoying, as when names of numerous minor historical figures are thrown at the reader. All in all, it's an excellent book for someone with a serious interest in Dubai.Those who have an interest in Dubai should also read Jim Krane's "City of Gold: Dubai and the Dream of Capitalism," which is lighter in style of writing and puts a greater emphasis on day-to-day life.

Despite the myriad of articles and sound bites about the latest achievements of Dubai, works dedicated to an in depth analysis of the city state have been extremely sparse. Search Dubai in Amazon and nearly all the books published were travel guides, with the exception of the book Dubai & Co.: Global Strategies for Doing Business in the Gulf States. There is a smattering of outdated literature about the UAE, but this does not little to illuminate the underlying trends and contradictions of the Emirate. Therefore Christopher M Davidson's academic work is particularly interesting and timely. Titled the vulnerability of success, this book has become the `go to' for a history of the Emirate and the ability to put the current achievements in context.Upon starting the book, I immediately skipped from the 19th century tribal histories to the last chapter on the eponymous `Vulnerabilities of Success'. I was disappointed to find little that had not already been discussed in further detail elsewhere. For example, the subsection: `Present threat of Terror' merited only 2 pages, and the dynamics of the economy in the last few years seems largely neglected. For those looking for an up to date picture of Dubai politics and economics, even The Report Dubai 2007 contains more depth. But lacking any other reading material on Dubai, I flipped back to 19th century tribal politics.Despite his title, Davidson's work on the history of Dubai is the core of this book, and where he certainly has the most to contribute. Through his narrative it becomes clear how far back the tradition of capitalism and immigration extend, exemplified in the anecdote that "Some of the earliest motorcars imported into Dubai were purchased for the expressed purpose of bringing Pakistanis across the mountains from Fujairah so they could work without the need for visas or time consuming paperwork." (91) Davidson also gives satisfactory answers to some of the most vexing questions about demographics, such as stating authoritatively that nationals account for only 4% of the population, and that 75% of the population is male. (168, 192) Finally, he manages to provide a complete picture of Dubai's role in the UAE and the gulf. One revelation is that the UAE actually convinced Saddam to leave power:The UAE also tried to head off the 2003 Anglo-American invasion of Iraq by offering Saddam Hussein and his family sanctuary on the condition that he respected Bush's ultimatum and left Iraq. Although it would appear that Saddam actually accepted this proposal, only for the Arab League to later force the UAE to withdraw it on the grounds that it represented interference in a fellow member's internal affairs. (p. 168 from Sheikh Muhammad bin Zayed in 2005)Another is the recent integration of Dubai's forces into the UAE network, and the Unions attempts to cozy up to numerous western powers.In sum, this is the reference book that lays the groundwork for further research on Dubai's history. While weak in analyzing emerging trends, Davidson's is valuable due to a thorough and interesting investigation into the context of the phenomenon that is Dubai.

This book is for the serious reader; it reads like an academic treatise--dense, magnificently researched with fascinating subject matter.The first couple chapters succinctly cover the emirate's history. The following chapters detail the first free zone--Jebel Ali port--and the recent emergence of Dubai's diversified economy.Chapter five concentrates of the distributed-wealth principle and Dubai's reliance on its rentier nature. The next chapter speaks of the paradoxes embedded in present day Dubai(the mix of East-West).Dubai's relationships with the other emirates are explored in chapter seven, providing some really fascinating insights (who know alcohol was legal in Sharjah until Suadi helped bail the emirate out of its banking crisis in 1989?).And the book concludes with a chapter on Dubai's naughty underbelly--gun running, terrorism, etc. Personally, I found it the least interesting chapter of the book.One warning: if I hadn't lived in Dubai for a year before reading this book, it would not have resonated as strongly. Frankly, if you don't have a baseline understanding of Dubai, you may not get much out of it; the book is too dense and specific for a cursory understanding.

Although written by an academic authority on the subject this book was very readable, and in places I had to remind myself this was non-fiction, such is the scale and pace of Dubai's development. I ordered this quite some time ago, as a pre-release, and only received it this month, so there must have been some delays, but it was worth it. The history is fascinating and it is clear that the origins of the city still have a major influence on its current activities. I never understood before how the UAE and Dubai fitted together, along with many other questions I used to have in mind, but I now found explanations to this normally hidden and secretive part of the world. The information on the ruling families is incredible. Although it would have been good to have some color to the maps included, this book is absolutely invaluable and seems to be written by a genuinely neutral and construcitvely critical author, unlike most other books on the Persian Gulf.

Thank you for making the decision to serve and for the service you provided not just to our country, but to the people of Iraq you helped while there. More than that, thank you for sharing your story. More often than not, those returning from war, as you pointed out yourself, are reluctant to share their experiences. From someone who never enlisted, it is easier to say you appreciate a soldier's sacrifice when you have no real concept of what was involved other than a vague notion of his/her temporary residence in an alien environment and the perceived anxieties of being there and missing one's family and friends. Was it dangerous? Well, it is war. That lack of specificity does little or nothing to paint a picture or transfer feelings to someone who wasn't there. I am certain that your stories brought me just a short distance towards truly understanding what you and other members of the armed forces have gone through, but it is farther than any newscast or anyone else has ever taken me. I truly (if not fully) appreciate your decision to help bring others on that journey, to help them share both your sacrifice and your newfound camaraderie. The decision to open up your soul in this way was, in some ways, as equally brave as going off to serve. Also, thank you for the laughs. The way you wove humor through a story about life, death, fear, and more... well, again, my words fail me, so I'll just say it again: Thank you!

Thank you Ryan for taking me with you on each page. I felt as though I was right there. My grandfather was an MP for General Patton and would never talk about anything. Your words helped me understand him better and to ensure I don't ever forget to thank you and everyone else in the military for the freedom that I often take for granted. Thank you Ryan.

"Ghosts of War" tells the story of a typical U.S. Army reservist deployed to the Middle East. While the story lacks boom-boom excitement, this is due to the fact that the story is an autobiographical account of his experiences "over there." Not everyone in Iraq or Afghanistan gets shot or injured. Nonetheless, all are deeply affected by the experience, and it shows in the book, which is worth the read. Anyone interested in another account of a G.I.'s experiences can read "War Year" by Joe Haldeman - a semi-autobiographical account of his year in Vietnam - which is perhaps the best "true" account of war I've ever read. I even teach "War Year" in my English classes (we also use "Ghosts of War").

I bought this book to learn why a 19 year old would join the Military right out of high school. I was not disappointed, very informative and I feel very honestly written. I feel that our government did not do justice to the individuals who chose to join the Military service at the time. I want to thank all our service men and women for the sacrifices they made and are making to defend our country. Thank-you Ryan for writing this book,I totally enjoyed it.

Surprisingly readable. What started as the kind of book that I wrongly though would be a tale of little value, written by a talented enlisted man, turned out to be quite enjoyable. Perhaps is his style of writing, the way he describes his surroundings, thoughts, emotions, etc., but it does pack power and is well worth the price of the book. 4 Stars.

If you are considering joining the service, this is a great book to read. It offers a window into what to expect in both basic training and in war. Also, this story links the training to the actual "boots on the ground" experience of being at war - these insights will make basic training a little more palatable.

Huge book, designed by Baron & Baron. The first printing I received came with a folding poster similar in style to the tipped-in photo on the slip-case cover (shown in the product image). The actual cloth book cover has some standard debossing with a weirdly flimsy vellum jacket. The photography is excellent with numerous pages that fold-out. Well worth the price and recommended for anybody who works in the creative industry.

Beautiful book capturing the essence of Kawakubo's artistry and voice. Photographs of her workmasterly reproduced. A must for followers and collectors of her clothes.

I love that this is an updated collection of sauces and even better, there are recipes for everyone from vegans to hard core meat eaters. Great pictures and inventiveness that works, not just for effect. I LOVE this : TURNING WHOLE FOODS INTO SAUCES WITHOUT ADDING THICKENERS, both savory and sweet (fruit). And then there's, The Three Fundimentals of sauce Making. This is not just a recipe book, it's a How To class with a plethora of information to help us get it right. Love it! Thank you Susan for being a perfectionist!

This is the one sauce reference you won't want to be without. This volume will go on the shelf next to my other splattered and well loved references. Should be in every young cook's armamentarium.

I like the fact that sauces are made accessible. The basics and base sauces are explained and the cook is allowed the flexibility to adapt based on their needs. This is the book's strength.However, this book is pretty deficient on Asian based sauces. For example, for the Thai Coconut Curry sauce, an ingredient used is Thai Red curry paste. For me, I want the real deal from scratch first. Then show me the shortcut. Another example is the Hoisin Barbeque Sauce which calls for 1/2 cup Hoisin sauce as one of the ingredients. The book never explains how to make Hoisin sauce. I needed to browse the internet to find some basics for this.

At that restaurant it was a career effort not to hug Tina.I was a Vanity Fair contributing editor from 1987 to 1993. As a writer who could deliver a late-breaking cover story against a ridiculous deadline, I was the happy recipient of Tina’s attention. Thrilled to share a masthead with the magazine equivalent of the 1927 Yankees, I returned it. I also saw Tina’s few but surprising weaknesses. Like: limited peripheral vision. Literally: she didn’t have much awareness of someone behind her or to the side. And metaphorically: her relentless focus on the magazine and her hellacious workload sometimes blinded her to her writers’ feelings. Once, on a car phone, she killed months of my work. (That gnawed on her; a decade later, she apologized.) And she had the unfortunate tendency, not unique to her, to be disproportionately influenced by the last person she talked to; at VF, office politics was a blood sport. (Someone posted a sign in the office: “On the side we put out a magazine.”) And she tolerated and maybe enabled an epidemic of Terminal Fabulousness — like, in a morning meeting of a dozen VF heavies in a windowless inner office of a Hollywood soundstage, I was the only one not wearing sunglasses.I offer these criticisms so I don’t come off as a fanboy. The fact is, Tina Brown was a once-in-a-lifetime creative force in a business that generally rewarded dull competence. She set the bar high (“Always do the impossible thing first”), urged writers to have a big life (“Go out, go out, and bring something back, even if it’s only a cold”), and took her greatest pleasure in marking copy with a red pencil (“It’ll cut like butter.”) These days, when New York media folk tell me how hard they work, I just smile. And think, “Not compared to Tina Brown.”Her diaries are a record of her creativity, decisiveness and pluck. For those who didn’t discover her crisp prose in "The Diana Chronicles," the diaries also reveal that she is a wickedly good writer.This book is not for everyone. She launches The Daily Beast, another budget-buster, on the Web. And now she’s found a home in the women’s conference zone.Back at Vanity Fair, Graydon Carter, standing on her shoulders, staged a holding action for 25 years, freezing the magazine’s DNA while making a 7-figure salary, plus perks, and building his personal brand as a restaurateur and film producer. With his departure, that ends. Conde Nast told his potential replacements that they’ll have a vastly lower salary and that “they’d like them to reimagine the magazine, its digital properties and its conference business — but that the title’s budget would be shrinking.” The brave new editor, Radhika Jones, comes from the books department of the Times, which has been brutally slashing budgets for years. Translation: Conde Nast is preparing this tired title to be a smaller, less successful brand.Sic transit Gloria? Well, magazines, like all organisms, have a life cycle. Tina Brown? “Unless I’m working, I am agitated,” she writes. Does Act 3 lie ahead (or is it Act 4) for her? Never say never.

First the negative. You have to be VERY interested in the New York media world of the 1980s to truly enjoy this book. And you have to be VERY interested in the day to day detail of what it takes to edit a successful general interest magazine. When Brown took over at Vanity Fair, she was a young (about 30) happily married British media world star. Maybe because she had not yet tasted failure or personal unhappiness, she lacks any larger world view and isn't particularly reflective about the Reagan era. Whatever helps drive up circulation numbers and sell ad space is grist for her mill.The book's strength resides in Brown's smart, witty take on situations and personalities. She mixed with literary lions, celebrities and the social glitterati, and she has entertaining tales to tell. Wide open to experience and sharply observant, with a gift for the telling detail, her writing is a treat to read.

I am a regular reader for over 10 years of the exceptional Vanity Fair magazine. The best place for long stories that are of great interest. But what of before the currently retiring Gaydon Carter? This fills in the story of how Tina Brown, a young Brit, takes this "restart" magazine in the 1980s long from its 1920s glory days and completely remakes it into the success that Gaydon Carter eventually continues.Now, it is repetitive. And if name dropping is offensive to you, DON'T READ!. If continual descriptions of dinners is pretentious, DON'T READ. And I must admit that it is too slow when it leaves the magazine story and moves too much in to dinner parties. But in the end it is a very compelling read of how an underpaid Brit finally gets what is coming and really makes a name for herself in NYC. I enjoyed immensely. But it is a commitment and not without slow, dull parts. But when Warren Beatty calls you for lunch, it's worth reading why. Enjoy.

I bought this rather large volume as I saw it reviewed on TV. Even though I don't know all the various celebrities - apart from Donald Trump (and there's quite a few tasty bits of gossip about him, and his ladies, in there too) I was fascinated with Tina Brown and how she managed to bring the faltering Vanity Fair magazine back to relevance, after having put the Tatler Magazine in England back on the map. She went on to be Editor in Chief also of the New York Times, and went on to establish the Daily Beast, among other things. And was honored in her own country, England by the Queen! Could not put it down.....!
