I love Eyewitness Guides and have been using them for years. The only reason I gave it four stars is that the pages are shiny and create a glare that makes it difficult to see under certain lights. Also, there's a lot of information packed in these books so the print is pretty small.

The guide was helpful once I arrived in Malta but less so for planning purposes. I would have liked more practical information like about tipping or that the bus system is great but never in time. The size of the book was perfect. I could always carry it with me.

This is a very nice little book that features the things that you'll want to see the first time around and also provides a couple of nice maps that you can take out and slip into your pocket. It goes into enough detail so that you have some idea what you're looking at, but not so much detail that you end up with a guidebook that makes you list to one side when you carry it in your bag. Everything was accurate and I found it a great help.

I like that it highlights key sights and other destinations from more mundane ones.

This book was easy to use, I referred to the pull out map frequently which was small enough to slip into my purse.

ok but would have been more useful as a combined book with some other nearby islands

My wife and I spent a week in Malta and this book traveled everyplace with us. Easy, quick and indispensable, the only way to see all the important parts of the Country.

I absolutely love this book, and consider it a must have for any educator or person who works with oppressed groups. This book helped me better approach my teaching job as a person of privilege who works with at risk students in a high poverty area. It explains how to allow the oppressed to come to their own conclusions about the ways of the world, instead of treating them as a container to be filled with a teacher's purportedly superior ideas. He gives an actionable method for guiding oppressed people to take an active and critical role in their education: through the use of easily executed thematic studies and questioning. He includes many historic examples to create a strong foundation for his arguments. I found his writing challenging but extremely rewarding, if you are patient with this book there is much to learn.

Great, eye-opening read, without the pretense that is often associated with this subject matter. Chapter 2 already features great substance. In other words, this is not the type of book that drags on for 150 pages before there's a payoff. It's a powerful exploration into the realms of education, pedagogy and oppression, but not in the trite sense we hear about regularly. Has the potential to change someone's way of thinking and today is as relevant as ever.

Pedogogy of the Oppressed first came out in English in 1970 (or thereabouts). ithink I read it first as a budding community organizer in 1971 or 72. I was totally captivated as were many others. It was acclaimed then as one of the most powerful messages to those who believed in social justice and wish to somehow work with the poor and oppressed to seek their liberation. It was, and remains both a guide and a challenge to us. Freire urges us to first understand the situations of the oppressed, from their point of view, out of their own experience. Two, of many, lessons are crucial. One, is to understand our own need for liberation, our own need to recognize our own place in capitalist exploitation. Freire admonishes us not assume that we (academics, social workers, activists, community organizers, etc) can liberate or empower the oppressed. We can only accompany them on that journey, often a very difficult and dagerous one. He does not desparage the effots of "outsiders" to offer assistance, nor does he romanticize those who live under the heal of oppressivensystems. Our efforts however must be undertaken in humility, in solidarity with the poor, not as self appointed leaders and theoreticians who will impart our sophistcated knowledge to the masses. Indeed, contemporary activists and academics, both those in the acadey and inthe field, who offer rules and lessons on how to work in solidarity or, as is common these days, how to act as "allies" need to read Pedagogy before they dispense their lessons. And they should continue to read it. A second crucial point is to learn, think about, and put into action the notion of praxis, the crucial idea of always linking theory,action and reflection in working for progressive, liberation social change. Simply put, there can be no fundamental change without action and analysis. Ideas and action must not be seen to be in opposition but in a dynamic relationship. There are many points that Freire makes that come out of his own experience with the poor as well as his extensive reading of the great critical theorists. In my view, Freire' works and this book in particular are indispensable in understanding the struggles of the oppressed and the part to be played by those who wish to assist.

This book is incredible!!! it is well written and the vocabulary would keeps the most avid reader on his toes. I am a college graduate and i had a dictionary in one hand and a pen in the other! The book describe learning as a subjective approach, it is not about teaching them, but what can we learn from each other. Freire approach to teaching should be standard in every institution across the world.

While the book is can seem somewhat radical in the first chapter, the message does become clear by the second. I can definitely see how Freire was arrested - they only read the first pages. This book did really open my eyes to the institutionally installed glass ceiling.

This book is for my personal library. It answers very important questions I have had throughout my life, concerning how a society that has been marked by colonization can overcome that past conditioning and understand it in a new light, an empowering one.

Freire has some very enlightening thoughts to share on the nature of the oppressed and the oppressors. He obviously made a big impact through his writings, teachings, and life. Throughout my tenure at EMU's CJP program, I have heard Freire repeatedly referenced both directly and indirectly and deservedly so. However, while I do think the book is well worth reading, I have the same complaint with Freire's book that I have with the writings of many philosophers -- it's not written in such a way as to be readily accessible to the masses. Of course, I here I'm assuming that the translator was true to the original. I think the author would have served his goal better to have more simply communicated his message. Though the book is not long at all, I found it to be way longer than needed to express the author's points. I felt that his points were repeated throughout the book, though perhaps in slightly different forms, which is why, particularly as I got to the last chapter, I found myself skimming more than reading. I didn't care for the repetition. All in all, I do think it is a book worth reading - though I would recommend borrowing a copy rather than purchasing.

OLC is not commonly adopted in the US, but I think that it has some very important advantages over its competitors in the inductive-grammar method market that should be considered. (If you want a traditional grammar-method book for a class of accelerated gifted students, maybe look elsewhere. That's a whole different animal.)1. The use of Horace as a main character is an inspired alternative to Caecilius. The trouble with Caecilius has always been that he has to die so soon, which cuts CLC largely free of primary sources. The large body of autobiographical data in Horace's poetry allows for a continuing story which can be connected to primary sources in translation at early reading levels. Also, since most students will go on to read Augustan literature before Flavian literature, it's very useful to have a late Republic-era main story. (Plus Ecce characters have no primary source basis whatsoever.)2. Culture chapters are, on the whole, more sophisticated than in the competition.3. The inclusion of some English-to-Latin helps cut down on the misuse of the inductive grammar method (i.e. turning "inductive grammar" into "no grammar").4. Since it's a single volume, rather than the two volumes that would make up a high school level Latin 1 in CLC (you need the red book AND the blue if you're teaching 9th grade or above!), it's easier to get your school/district to agree to buy you enough materials.5. Syntax is more varied, even in early chapters, than most competitors; students are less likely to be shocked by sentences which start with something that's not the nominative.NB: Be aware that this book makes the idiosyncratic decision to delay teaching tenses other than the present. While I think this is a very clever way to keep the workload manageable for mixed-ability classes due to the use of the historical present in Latin, if you/your district/your parents care about the National Latin exam, it's an issue. I personally hate the NLE so I don't care. Oh, and while most of the Latin is very well written, the "phi, phae, pho, phum" pun in the Polyphemus story is a little cringe-inducing. . .

I taught Latin I for 20+ years in the public school system and stayed frustrated with the texts we were given to use. Now that I'm teaching independently and can choose my own text, I'm going with the Oxford Latin Course. The vocabulary is similar to other texts, but this series gives accessible translations so students can master that important skill early. I'm also pleased that the OLC does not give dull grammar exercises but presents important concepts and gives practice through the cartoons, the translations, etc. The lessons are short and move quickly. The cultural info is also good. Other than wishing for more info on derivatives, I'm enjoying using it to teach Lain 1 students.

Having read some very critical reviews of this series, I wanted to say I have found it engaging and pretty well done. For my students, perhaps an overwhelming reason to choose it was the price, which compares very favorably with the $60 to $80 many conventional Latin texts cost.I agree with some critics it would be better if there were more supplementary materials and, for many teachers who were educated more traditionally, not introducing all the principal parts of verbs at once is an adjustment. However, I do feel there are many things to commend this series, including the heavy emphasis on reading for comprehension instead of just rote learning. It certainly introduces a lot of vocabulary in a short time and gives a context for it.All in all, my home school students have done well with this text.

I used the first edition for a Latin course I taught 8+ years ago. I found and purchased this at a local State University (ASU) book store and could not believe this was intended for a college level course. I used it for group of HS level homeschoolers.I recently purchased the 2nd edition to teach Latin to my 12 and 9 year old sons. We've made it through 7 Lessons and although they are challenged to keep it all straight (declensions, conjugations, case, gender, number, agreement, ...) , they are succeeding. If they were older I'd probably use Wheelock where you get real Latin jewels in the "sententiae antinquae".I'm a little disappointed in the 2nd Edition format. The grammar/exercises have been removed from the mainline content (reading passages, historical highlights) and placed in the back of the book. And there is no indication which execises should be given prior to content. So, if you are doing this on your own, you may want to first read the "cartoon" at the start of each chapter/lesson and then do all the grammar/exercises followed by the mainline content. I'm tyring to interleave the exercises with content to make it more fun.Lastly, the Latin profanity in Lesson 6 is completely inappropriate.

My daughter had to purchase this book for a 7th grade Latin class. Overall I like the book. I only wish that it gave more explanation as to the mechanics of Latin. Having said that though I think it is definitely a credible book and good for those who are learning Latin.

I have learned a half dozen languages and used many different books to do so...this one is by far the most irritating! The book does not give very clear explanations for the cases & grammar in Latin and I was halfway through chapter 5 when I realized that the majority of my questions could be answered at the back of the book, where all the grammar excersises are. This book isn't terrible, just confusing. It has strangely drawn cartoons (like Sunday comic strips) to help you understand the dialogue, and some excellent history stories about what life was probably like in ancient Rome. If you really want to learn Latin, though, I am told that Wheelock's is a much better book. I recommend taking a chance with that book instead of this one.

I am a collector of curriculum, and Latin resources in particular. This is a fabulous book! Well laid out and paced, very clear instruction on grammar and pronunciation. Highly recommended!

I agree that there is a lot of useful information included in here. From personal experience, however, my prospective employer was taken aback by the information that the book recommended I ask for because they were not 'commonplace requests'. Caveat emptor: some of the advice may not be practical based on your specific situation. You really have to feel it out.

Everyone who does not have much experience with practice evaluation and contract review should read this book. I read it on the flight to one of my interviews and it proved to be very helpful when I discussed the practice with the interviewer. It does not go into great depth but it gave me just enough to understand the terminology and ins and outs of how a practice works, as well as types of contracts.

Excellent primer. You still may need a lawyer to review your contract, but this book is worth its weight in gold!

I would recommend this book to any physician looking for a job in the healthcare industry. Very well written, easy to understand, concise (under an hour of casual reading), very practical and written by someone who has extensive experience in the field. A absolute must have.
