I absolutely love this book, and consider it a must have for any educator or person who works with oppressed groups. This book helped me better approach my teaching job as a person of privilege who works with at risk students in a high poverty area. It explains how to allow the oppressed to come to their own conclusions about the ways of the world, instead of treating them as a container to be filled with a teacher's purportedly superior ideas. He gives an actionable method for guiding oppressed people to take an active and critical role in their education: through the use of easily executed thematic studies and questioning. He includes many historic examples to create a strong foundation for his arguments. I found his writing challenging but extremely rewarding, if you are patient with this book there is much to learn.

Great, eye-opening read, without the pretense that is often associated with this subject matter. Chapter 2 already features great substance. In other words, this is not the type of book that drags on for 150 pages before there's a payoff. It's a powerful exploration into the realms of education, pedagogy and oppression, but not in the trite sense we hear about regularly. Has the potential to change someone's way of thinking and today is as relevant as ever.

Pedogogy of the Oppressed first came out in English in 1970 (or thereabouts). ithink I read it first as a budding community organizer in 1971 or 72. I was totally captivated as were many others. It was acclaimed then as one of the most powerful messages to those who believed in social justice and wish to somehow work with the poor and oppressed to seek their liberation. It was, and remains both a guide and a challenge to us. Freire urges us to first understand the situations of the oppressed, from their point of view, out of their own experience. Two, of many, lessons are crucial. One, is to understand our own need for liberation, our own need to recognize our own place in capitalist exploitation. Freire admonishes us not assume that we (academics, social workers, activists, community organizers, etc) can liberate or empower the oppressed. We can only accompany them on that journey, often a very difficult and dagerous one. He does not desparage the effots of "outsiders" to offer assistance, nor does he romanticize those who live under the heal of oppressivensystems. Our efforts however must be undertaken in humility, in solidarity with the poor, not as self appointed leaders and theoreticians who will impart our sophistcated knowledge to the masses. Indeed, contemporary activists and academics, both those in the acadey and inthe field, who offer rules and lessons on how to work in solidarity or, as is common these days, how to act as "allies" need to read Pedagogy before they dispense their lessons. And they should continue to read it. A second crucial point is to learn, think about, and put into action the notion of praxis, the crucial idea of always linking theory,action and reflection in working for progressive, liberation social change. Simply put, there can be no fundamental change without action and analysis. Ideas and action must not be seen to be in opposition but in a dynamic relationship. There are many points that Freire makes that come out of his own experience with the poor as well as his extensive reading of the great critical theorists. In my view, Freire' works and this book in particular are indispensable in understanding the struggles of the oppressed and the part to be played by those who wish to assist.

One of the most important books I have ever read. Totally changed my view of education and made me a more conscientious Social Worker. Highly recommend this book as a must have for anyone working in education, teaching, with youth and social services.

This book is incredible!!! it is well written and the vocabulary would keeps the most avid reader on his toes. I am a college graduate and i had a dictionary in one hand and a pen in the other! The book describe learning as a subjective approach, it is not about teaching them, but what can we learn from each other. Freire approach to teaching should be standard in every institution across the world.

While the book is can seem somewhat radical in the first chapter, the message does become clear by the second. I can definitely see how Freire was arrested - they only read the first pages. This book did really open my eyes to the institutionally installed glass ceiling.

This book is for my personal library. It answers very important questions I have had throughout my life, concerning how a society that has been marked by colonization can overcome that past conditioning and understand it in a new light, an empowering one.

Freire has some very enlightening thoughts to share on the nature of the oppressed and the oppressors. He obviously made a big impact through his writings, teachings, and life. Throughout my tenure at EMU's CJP program, I have heard Freire repeatedly referenced both directly and indirectly and deservedly so. However, while I do think the book is well worth reading, I have the same complaint with Freire's book that I have with the writings of many philosophers -- it's not written in such a way as to be readily accessible to the masses. Of course, I here I'm assuming that the translator was true to the original. I think the author would have served his goal better to have more simply communicated his message. Though the book is not long at all, I found it to be way longer than needed to express the author's points. I felt that his points were repeated throughout the book, though perhaps in slightly different forms, which is why, particularly as I got to the last chapter, I found myself skimming more than reading. I didn't care for the repetition. All in all, I do think it is a book worth reading - though I would recommend borrowing a copy rather than purchasing.
