A fascinating look backstage at the world of competitive gymnastics through the eyes of a world champion. i found it interesting to read about her childhood, her family, and the earliest beginnings of her interest in gymnastics, and to lear about her coaches and the intense training regimen it took to achieve the skills she achieved. It opened my eyes to a whole world I was unfamiliar with. The book is well-written and easy to read. Simone is an exceptionally gifted young woman who takes a real joy in her career as an athlete and also enjoys her family and friends. it made me happy to read about her and her accomplishments.

I bought this as a stocking stuffers for my 8 year old budding gymnast. She was so excited about reading it, that she started reading it from the moment it arrived and never put it down.I read several pages of it with her, and personally can't wait until she is done so I can read it too....lol.

So inspirational. I can't understand why she didn't thank Aly personally in the acknowledgments. The book tells of her life's triumphs and setbacks as well as life lessons she learned along the way. Finished this in one day. Couldn't put it down.

My daughter loves Simone! She was so inspired by her during the Olympics we got this book so she could do her first book report (she is 8). She really enjoyed the book and learned a great deal from this remarkable young athlete's story.

I'm normally not your biography sort, but after seeing Simone's fantastic performances, I had to read this. And I don't regret it. The print is large (about size 14) , so it's quick and easy, but there's good humor and lessons within the stories. Simone constantly tells what she's accomplished, yet never boasts. Whether talking about how Simone was adopted by her grandparents or a funny bee incident at a gymnastics competition, it's engaging and fast-paced. I kept reading stories out loud to share with the family.I'd even say Simone makes a good role model. Maybe some parents wouldn't like how she wanted a belly ring or didn't let her parents know about mischief she and her sister got into, but her perseverance and hard work set a good example for all readers.

The book overall is an easy read, and has a conversational tone. I think it is appropriate for those age seven and up. However, the topics remain at the surface and without true exploration or meaning to the reader. For instance, although she describes the time line of her early years, it is with minimal detail, emotion, or even recollection. Decent for a young readers book, but left this family wanting more...

This was a gift for a young gymnast. This is the first book she's read completely through on her own & she loved it so much she read it at every opportunity straight through. I think an avid reader has just been created!

Very inspirational. There are a lot of books about fanous athletes, but with her difficult background, this one has content worth reading. It's a great book for tween and teen girls who are facing adversity, and need some encouragement that they can have a bright future.

Revolutionary Friends: General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette, by Selene Castrovilla

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-The Marquis de Lafayette is famous for helping George Washington and the Continental Army defeat the British. The idea of exploring the development of his relationship with the American general in picture-book form is intriguing, but while this version is long on historical content, it is short on flair. The research is admirable. Direct quotations from Lafayette are featured on almost every page, and lists of sources and places to visit, as well as time lines of the men's lives, provide excellent historical background. However, these figures do not come to life. The author concentrates on Lafayette arriving in America, becoming part of Washington's army, and proving his mettle at the Battle of Brandywine. The large illustrations end when Washington visits the wounded Lafayette and instructs the doctor to care for him "as if he were my son," demonstrating the real affection that developed between them. However, the account goes on for three more pages, illustrated by much smaller images. The awkward transition complicates the book's ability to find an audience. Younger readers who are drawn to the picture-book format may lose interest in the text-heavy later part, while older students studying the Revolutionary War may find the book too simplistic for their needs. The pen-and-ink illustrations with digital coloring are appealing for the most part, but they have an odd flatness that detracts from their overall effect. Spreads that should have depth and a vanishing point seem more one-dimensional than two. French phrases incorporated into the text are defined at the end of the book, not in context, which may be cumbersome for some readers.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

*Starred Review* In 1777, the 19-year-old Marquis de Lafayette defied his king’s orders and left France to fight for freedom in America. Though initially expecting little, Washington found the young French nobleman idealistic, courageous, and eager to learn everything he could from the general he idolized. Congress had refused to give Lafayette a command, but he proved his mettle at the Battle of Brandywine, where he rallied retreating troops and suffered a leg wound. The doctor was told by Washington to treat him as he would his son, “for I love him with the same affection.” The picture-book story rather abruptly ends there, though the next three pages continue the vivid account of Washington and Lafayette’s “revolutionary friendship” in an information-packed narrative, followed by detailed time lines of their lives. In addition, there are suggestions of places to visit, a source bibliography, and a glossary translating the French words and phrases sprinkled through the text. Short passages from Lafayette’s letters and other writings appear in small, scroll-like boxes on some double-page spreads. Kozjan’s illustrations, lively ink drawings digitally enhanced with color and subtle shading, will engage readers, as they bring the period settings to life. This oversize, handsome package will introduce a little-known aspect of the Revolutionary War history through pithy words and often dramatic pictures. It respects its audience as well as the historically significant friendship it portrays. Grades 2-5. --Carolyn Phelan

#318,826 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book covers the relationship between Washington and Le Marquis de Lafayette. It mostly focuses on Lafayette rather then Washington. It is not for the younger crowd. They use a lot of french expressions and the text is fairly long. I guess it is not what I expected.

It was a beautiful little book to get a child interested in our nation's rich history. My granddaughter loved it! It is simple enough for younger children but in a short book with great illustrations, there is a lot to get the little wheels turning.

Book was in excellent like new condition and my niece and nephew enjoyed reading it.

The story of the reserved George Washington's initially reluctant friendship with the young French officer whose heart "enlisted" in the American struggle for independence from Britain, is told in a spare, sprightly narrative interspersed with French words and phrases (C'est le moment! Magnifique!). The storyline focuses narrowly on the year 1777 beginning with the events leading up to the first meeting of the two and ending (somewhat abruptly) with Washington's visit to Lafayette at the house where he was recovering from a wound suffered at the Battle of Brandywine. But the wider historical picture is there as well: Sidebar "scrolls" contain quotes from Lafayette's documents and the backmatter, a treasure trove for teachers, includes the continuation of their relationship until the death of Washington, timelines, places to visit, a bibliography, a glossary of French phrases used in the text, and reproductions of two portraits currently hanging in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives. The color-on-pen-and-ink illustrations, many of them sweeping two-page spreads, capture both the human warmth and the dramatic historical sweep of the story. This book is lively enough to be simply read aloud and sturdy enough to be used as the basis for a U.S. history unit.

First, a disclaimer--I assisted the author, in a very small way, by analyzing and critiquing some of the illustrations for this book. That being said, I can still give my honest opinion, that this is a beautifully done book. The illustrations are very attractive and the book itself contains a wealth of information for young readers. There are not enough lively, engaging works on history for this age group, so I am always thrilled to see another entry in the field.

This is a wonderful book. The Marquis de Lafayette has been my 7 year old's hero for 3 years now. After a trip to Brandywine & Valley Forge, I'm a fan now too. I knew very little about Lafayette until my son had such an interest in the American Revolution that I had to learn more. I'm glad we did because the Marquis has a great story.

I used to live in Washington D.C., and I'd pass Lafayette Square all the time. How did I never make the connection between the two?Thank you, Ms. Castrovilla, for writing a fun and engaging children's book that sheds light on two of the most important statesmen of the 18th century, both of whom had profound effects on how our nation was built.

Great story and illustrations. Good timeline and references in the back.

#223,607 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I came to this book via the podcast of the same name, narrated by Eric Marcus. I have found the podcast to be one of the most insightful and moving productions out there. This book is the result of the interviews Mr. Marcus is currently revisiting on the podcast. It is a joy to be reading of these many people who are so important to the history of the gay rights movement in America. In many of the interviews in the book I can hear in my mid the actual voices of the people telling the stories. And it is fun to see just how much all of these people had to say, much of which, for time and clarity, does not make it to the podcasts. It is also a delight to be meeting more people here in the book, who for whatever reasons have not mede it into the podcasts, or at least not yet. Mr. Marcus is an incredible interviewer who manages to get all of these historical figures to really talk in depth of their experiences. Some of the stories are funny, many are intense, some are quite sad, all are educational. At the end of the book, there is a summation of everyone and where they are today. At the end of each podcast, the author also gives a summation of where these people are today (the bulk of the interviews were originally done between 1988 and 1990, I believe). For people who were so very alive during these interviews with Mr. Marcus, it is truly heartbreaking to see how many are no longer with us. But their contributions remain and this book does a spectacular job of capturing each and every one.

What makes this history so important to me is that it is based on interviews of those who were directly involved with the events that have shaped our current understanding of ourselves and our political position within the US. Reading this book was both an emotionally moving and consciousness raising experience as i listened to multiple voices present their perspective on their efforts to bring about positive change for LGBT people. There is an earlier version of the book which took a slightly different approach in its ordering of the interviews. The newest release of the book covers the new millennia and presents the interviews in the order of the events they discuss. I feel the new ordering is one of the things that helps makes this book more readable than the original, so, make certain you get the latest, updated, version. This book and The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.(Book review): An article from: The Historian are the two books i recommend to friends who want to learn about LGBT history. The two books are complements in that The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.(Book review): An article from: The Historian covers in detail one period of LGBT history that has been all but lost, yet, it was important in driving the events presented in Making Gay History far more than the Stonewall incident.

Fantastic, although I lived through the whole period, being born in 1946, I was only vaguely aware of most of this drama. As an out and married to my husband gay man, I endured 27 yrs of hetero/marriage first because it was the thing to do. We have come a long way and this history has brought a lot of memories into perspective. I have a much deeper pride in being gay thanks to this book. I recommend it.

This should be required reading for all Americans before they graduate from high school. This, too, is our nation's history, not just the decision making processes of a bunch of privileged white men.Another facet of the jewel that is the multi-cultural joy of America!

This was just was I was looking for -- real INFORMATION instead of opinion, so I learned a lot from this. I definitely need to read it again. It was a little hard to follow because it seemed like the print version would have been much easier to follow. It seems like sections are continued on unexpected pages, kind of like reading a newspaper article continued on another page. On the electronic version, it was a little hard to follow that. However, I completely treasure this book for the information it gave that I could not find elsewhere.

This wonderful book, which gave birth to the famous podcast by the same name, recounts the early gay rights movement, not through dry recitals but as the colorful, interesting, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking stories of those who lived it. Any fan of history or of people will enjoy the book.

A beautiful example of storytelling through the lens of autobiographical experiences. I loved hearing about the lgbtq rights movement through the voices of so many varied people.

Absolutely essential history, told in the stories of the fascinating, lovely people who made it and lived it. As important now as it ever was.

#115 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The physical book was in excellent condition, and I'm glad I chose hardback but do your research before buying due to content. The US news & world health report ranked this #38 out of 38 diets (the worst). This is not sustainable, and you immediately gain the weight right back despite them starting the first 3 chapters trying to get everyone to drink the koolaid on why they aren't a crash diet. Which they totally are, it's "don't eat anything but meat and vegetables for 30 days"- there I saved you $17.

Dear Prospective Whole-30ers,If you have been in a state of dependency on food--be it sugars, alcohol, chips, ice cream, just about anything--or if you have been unwell, unsuited to the world physically or emotionally--or, if you simply feel blah and would like to lose a little bit of weight--please consider trying this program. You might think, "I don't eat that badly! I eat a lot of whole foods!" which is what most people think of themselves (I sure did). But when you actually make a conscious decision to eliminate foods from your diet, you will see that even the small amounts of crap that you've been eating regularly matter. Prepare to be amazed. I sound like an evangelical, I know. It's a little embarrassing. But it is all true.My fiancee and I did this together. It takes teamwork (if you have a family, you probably need to get them on board). It also will help if you can begin (or even complete) this diet when you have a minimum of social obligations--having office mates who eat a lot of cake or friends who drink a lot of booze WILL NOT HELP while you are on this program. Don't try to start this the week before Christmas if your family gathers to eat until they pass out. Be realistic about when you begin this. You must prepare a little bit and read the book ahead of time so you aren't just floating at sea. And, be aware: you will not be able to sufficiently screen foods made by other people! But listen--we'd both been relatively inactive for years and each about 25 pounds overweight. Between the two of us we lost 34 lbs in 30 days and we are still going to keep up a serious commitment to Whole 30, with a few supplemental treats now and then. We feel better, we have new confidence about getting dressed in the morning, and we're more fit than in years, mostly because we have the energy to do more. The amazing thing is that you will NOT feel hungry if you hang in there and consistently prepare foods as per the cookbook/menus. There is also a very supportive and helpful forum online to supplement the book.Realistic Details: I think that this will be more challenging if your culinary experience is limited. A lot of people complain about the difficulty of the recipes. The fact is that if you can make eggs and broil or barbecue meat, or even if you can turn on an oven and toss a salad, you will be fine. You might be a little bored with the food if you are not savvy in the kitchen, but it might help if you are really a novice to get the cookbook in addition to the guide.Upsides: Has cured my chronic acid reflux completely. Completely changed my thyroid function and numbers for the better, have reduced medication dosage. Complexion better than in years. Lost a lot of weight and inches. Has helped to control cravings for many things. Has restored a more stable mental health balance and huge increase in energy levels. Dropping the weight has helped fitness levels immensely. AND if you can afford to buy Nutpods Creamers, these will allow you to drink coffee/tea within reason. This was the biggest bonus ever.Downsides: Prepare for a bit of a rise in grocery cost. Prepared foods cost less than whole foods. This is American governmental ag subsidies in a nutshell. It's unfortunate and unfair, but true. Also, as others have mentioned, you will be in the kitchen more. Again, it helps if one of you cooks and the other cleans up. It's a little annoying to be sure, but the results are more than worth the annoyances. It is also very difficult to eat out. You pretty much are limited to places that are expensive and accommodating, delis where you know and trust the ingredients, or Chipotle. Again, the slight isolation (if you can do this or at least begin it when you have a little time to spare and don't have a lot of socializing) helped.Another downside: If you have had chronic health issues (especially gut related), you may find that reintroduction actually teaches you that you're sensitive to most foods. It turns out peanut butter, gluten, and most dairy are now off limits. That rots!! But I'll live. I feel so, so much better without them, as I learned. And wouldn't you rather know why you feel crappy all the time? But then again, when have you found a program that is ENTIRELY ONLINE AND MOSTLY FREE that changes your life? When you are in line at the checkout with your meat and chicken thighs and raw almonds, remember the money you are going to save by NOT joining another weight-loss program or hiring a life coach or drinking booze or going to the doctor for that blood pressure you really ought to monitor which is quite possibly linked to your diet. Dallas and Melissa, the authors, say that a craving usually lasts about ten seconds. Count and breathe through the french fries someone raved about at the office. Skip out for a tiny walk while everyone is hoarding that cake at work. Eat a little roast turkey and some oven-baked potatoes. Read more books with the newfound energies. If I--a bon vivant of the kitchen, believe me, hoarder of butter, lover of booze, cream, sugar--can give these things up for thirty days, anyone can.

This book has simply changed my life. I know that you aren't supposed to weigh yourself on this program, but weighing myself is a motivator so I decided to skip that rule. It's only been two weeks and already I feel so much better. I am more alert in the mornings and my acid reflex is gone. In addition, my migraines seemed to have disappeared entirely. What is really motivating me is the fact that I lost 15 pounds and 10 overall inches in two weeks. I also love the fact that I have the energy to exercise again. I look forward to continuing this program even after my 30 days are up. I just feel that healthy and energetic! I'll post an update once my 30 days are complete. :)Update: So today is day 18 on my Whole30 journey. I just wanted to let you guys know that there is a lot of cooking involved with this program. I'm actually tired of cooking, which is why I started making large meals to freeze for the week. It actually works out well for me, especially since I don't mind eating the same food everyday. I've also been drinking a lot of tea and water. I feel like it is helping to flush out more toxins from my body. I has been approximately four days since my previous review and I lost an additional 2 pounds on this journey. I have so much energy that I actually am unable to sit still like I used to. I guess I was depressed before going on this journey so the Whole30 has actually improved my mood as well. I go for a walk every day and I've actually started a new workout program!Update: So I just finished Day 23 of my Whole30 Journey and I feel good, aside from the fact that I caught a cold. Weighing myself today, I discovered that I lost 19.5 pounds so far! I measured myself and immediately noted that I lost 19 inches over all (I measure my chest, both arms, both legs, waist, and hips). I think when I am done with my first round, I'll take a day off then start a second round. I just feel that great overall.Update: So I just finished my first whole30 round and I have to say that I'm super excited by the results. When I hopped on the scale today, I noticed that I had lost 26.6 pounds. I then measured myself and noted that I lost a total of 31.5 inches (-5" from chest, -2" from right arm, -3.5" from left arm, -8" from waist, -5" from hips, -4" from right thigh, and -4" from left thigh). I am really excited by my results!I plan to have a celebratory dinner tonight (likely a gluten free pizza from papa Murphy's), then I will start my second round of whole30 tomorrow. I think that I might actually reach my goal of losing 50 pounds by August!I'll keep you guys posted! If you have any questions, feel free to comment. I will do my best to answer them. :)

There are about half a dozen diets that are very similar. They all recommend you eat "meat and veg" The reason Whole 30 works for me is because you can have potatoes and fruit. An example of a whole 30 meal would be: 2 pork chops, mashed potatoes made with chicken stock, green beans, finish with your choice of fruit. My favorite is a few grapes or pineapple chunks. Also the goal it to make it 30 days without cheating. There have been several times I would think: OK I can't cheat now I only have __ more days to go. Having an end in site helped me. When I started adding back in food groups after the 30 days. I figured out that I do not do well with Dairy. Now the only dairy I use is real butter. I never thought I could live without cheese... But now I don't think it's a good idea for me. So it helps you figure out what you can and can not eat and still feel good.

Danny and the Dinosaur by Syd HoffThis audio book I listened to and it's about Danny and how he discovers dinosaurs at the museum. He pretends the dinosaur is real and can talk and they set out on an adventure-a ride around town. They see different things around town as they see the sights. Some waiting for a bus just hopped on his tail for a ride. They go to the baseball game and cheer for the team and he turns his body into a boat and acts like a boat. The zoo is a bit hit but they are asked to leave as everybody just wants to see the dinosaur and not the other animals. The kids teach him tricks and they all have a good time. The best part is the hide and seek game because the dinosaur is so big he can't hide well but the kids have an idea that works.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

We're big fans of the "I Can Read!" paperbacks, and started to run out of new "My First" level books. I looked at the Level 1, Beginning Reading, books and happened upon these two oldie but goodie books from Syd Hoff."Danny and the Dinosaur" first came out in 1958, and was followed a year later by "Sammy the Seal". I was delighted to see them reissued as "I Can Read!" books. They are a particularly good deal because they are twice as long as the usual "I Can Read!" books, but are still available at the regular paperback price. In "Danny and the Dinosaur" a kid meets a live dinosaur at the museum and heads out into the City with him for a day of wild/mild adventure. In "Sammy the Seal" a friendly seal who's curious about life is allowed a day out of the zoo so he can wander around and explore. Both books feature kind and friendly kids, helpful adults, cheerful adventures and no drama. Is this a 50's sort of thing? Well, yes, the books do have a bit of a nostalgic rose-colored-glasses feel to them, but they aren't glaringly old-fashioned and they've actually aged awfully well. So, these are two books that you might recognize from your own childhood library, they aren't franchise or movie tie-ins, they are readable at the recommended new reader level, they are mellow and colorful, and they're upbeat and cheerful. That's not bad at all.

My 4 year old son was losing interest in books. My fault because he would not like baby books for sure. He got level 1 book as his Christmas gift and he wanted us to read that book again and again. I wanted similar book and bought these. When I first read this book for him, he simply loved it. This is his first "story" book. I could see his expression, he wanted to know what happened next, page after page. :)

Great book for ages 3 to 6 yo. My nephew loves Danny and the Dinosaur. His dad and mom read it to him now. I remember having this book when I was a kid and reading it to my daughter. Its a classic and a must.

I may be grading a little hard at 4 stars, but could be a little better.Very good for a beginning reader. I think the pages illustrations are a little smaller than what you would get in a regular book, and the quality may be a little lower. But, you get all of the Danny and the Dinosaur stories in one book, and some are almost as good as the original. And, even the ones that aren’t, are decent.

Fun little book. It reads just as if you're telling a bedtime story. It was one of my son's favorites when he was a preschooler, so I picked up an extra copy to give away. This is an old story, and I think it's aged just fine. (No parts that seem insensitive now, which is an issue I've had with some other older stories.) I'm glad this has been reprinted.

My siblings and I used to read this book when we were little and it made us want a dinosaur friend (like Clifford the Big Red Dog makes you want a giant dog!). My sister and I had looked quite a few places for it and finally found it here. So excited! I'm ready to share it with the next generation of little ones ❤️

This is the same book I first learned to read by myself. I can recall my older brother helping me sound out the word "dinosaur" when it suddenly clicked and I got it. It was a magical moment in my childhood so I was thrilled to purchase this book for my own daughter to learn to read with. I love this story and the illustrations are darling. It is simple and fun. The look and style of these I Can Read books have vintage appeal but still work with kids today. My daughter loves when I read this to her at night.

My 6 year old girl loves these stories. They are fun and she can picture herself in the story. My only complaint would be that it seems a couple of the stories end rather abruptly. Almost like pages are missing, though I don't believe they are. I'll blame it on the editor. :)

“Admirably fresh [and] fully accessible. . . . Rockmore is an excellent guide to take you right to the edge of the mathematical map, and he's bang up to date." —New Scientist“A terrific read. . . . Like a fast-paced detective story. . . . With crystalline clarity and a refreshing sense of fun, Dan Rockmore . . . takes us on a guided tour of the deepest mystery in mathematics.” —Steven Strogatz, author of Sync“Remarkable and exciting. . . . From the Inside Flap

In 1859 a German professor named Bernhard Riemann postulated a law capable of describing with an amazing degree of accuracy the baffling occurrence of prime numbers; coming up with its proof has been the holy grail of mathematicians ever since. In "Stalking the Riemann Hypothesis, Dan Rockmore, a prominent mathematician in his own right, takes us from Euclid's pondering of the infinitude of the primes through modern efforts to prove the Riemann hypothesis-efforts that astonishingly connect the primes to the statistics of solitaire, chaos theory, and even the mysteries of quantum mechanics. Along the way, he introduces us to the many brilliant and fascinating thinkers who have contributed to this work, from the most famous mathematician of all time, Carl Friedrich Gauss (Riemann's teacher), to the intellectual giants David Hilbert and Freeman Dyson. A lively, comprehensive, and accessible examination of one of the most compelling unsolved problems in mathematics, "Stalking the Riemann Hypothesis tells us the full story of the quest to find that elusive solution.

Rockmore's narrative couched within all the historical background of Riemann and his contemporaries was not only interesting but it provided a path to understand all the why's of the Zeta function, Fourier Analysis, Complex Analysis ... and so much more. Most enjoyable with sufficient technical rigor to challenge even the enlightened.

OK, let's just stipulate that this guy loves mathematics--me, I'm just oddly fascinated with a topic so esoteric that it takes a graduate degree just to decipher the several alphabets that have been sacrificed to the needs of mathematical symbology. It appears as though I am not alone. However, Dr. Rockmore is staking out a different turf than the other books. His goal seems not to be geared towards explaining the difficult topics so much as giving a lay reader an introduction to the various issues that pertain to the problem of the Riemann Hypothesis. Metaphor and simile are not the best tools for describing higher mathematics. My only criticism of this book is that while it touches on everything it actually explains very little. At first, having read the Sabbagh and Derbyshire books, this was frustrating; however, it becomes clear that the purpose of this book is very different."Stalking the Riemann Hypothesis" is more in the nature of "Einstein's Dreams" by Alan Lightman. It is more an attempt to convey the mathematician's wonder and curiosity than an understanding of the underlying science; seen in this light, I felt the book succeeded.

This is the latest and we hope the last book on theRH at least until the thing is solved. It is notat all clear what audience the author was aimingfor but if he is afraid even to spell out suchbasics as the euler product, then clearly the wholeenterprise is doomed. The first third of the book -in which the maxim 'a picture (formula) is worth athousand words' is inverted - is essentiallya total loss. The only redeeming features are sectionson the connection to quantum chaos and to random matrices.Still, considering the resources available to the author, one expected much more.

I greatly enjoyed Prof. Rockmore's clear, non-jargon laden prose. He explains abstract, yet extremely important mathematical ideas with lucidity. I recommend this book highly.

This is another fine book on the Riemann Hypothesis that, in my view, strongly complements the volumes by John Derbyshire and Marcus du Sautoy. Readers of the book should have some prior exposure to the Riemann Hypothesis (including a basic understanding of complex variables), some understanding of linear algebra, and a modicum of understanding of quantum physics. I say this because, unlike for Derbyshire and du Sautoy, the mathematics underlying the Riemann Hypothesis are more talked about than developed. The strengths of the book are (1) the author's strong historical perspective, (2) his ability to make extremely esoteric mathematical concepts understandable (and fun!), and (3)a better discussion than provided by either Derbyshire or du Sautoy of the connection between the distribution of the zeta zeroes and the distribution of the prime numbers -- in short, why it is that the Riemann Hypothesis is viewed amongst mathematicians as being so important.

good book

This wasn't any good as a hardback and reissuing itin paperback doesn't change matters. To get an idea of what you are in for, see the reviewsof the hardback version.Bottom line: don't waste your money.

This book is not only a review of the issues, personalities and history of this great problem, but also an assessment of why it matters. A fascinating read.
