From the Back Cover

From the Boy Scouts and the U.S. military to marriage and adoption, the gay civil rights movement has exploded on the national stage.Eric Marcus takes us back in time to the earliest days of that struggle in a newly revised and thoroughly updated edition of Making History, originally published in 1992.Using the heart-felt stories of more than 60 people, he carries us through the compelling five-decade battle that has changed the fabric of American society. The rich tapestry that emerges from Making Gay History includes the inspiring voices of teenagers and grandparents, journalists and housewives, from the little known Dr. Evelyn Hooker and Morty Manford to former Vice President Al Gore, Ellen DeGeneres, and Abigail Van Buren. Together, these many stories bear witness to a time of astonishing change as gay and lesbian people have struggled against prejudice and fought for equal rights under the law.

I came to this book via the podcast of the same name, narrated by Eric Marcus. I have found the podcast to be one of the most insightful and moving productions out there. This book is the result of the interviews Mr. Marcus is currently revisiting on the podcast. It is a joy to be reading of these many people who are so important to the history of the gay rights movement in America. In many of the interviews in the book I can hear in my mid the actual voices of the people telling the stories. And it is fun to see just how much all of these people had to say, much of which, for time and clarity, does not make it to the podcasts. It is also a delight to be meeting more people here in the book, who for whatever reasons have not mede it into the podcasts, or at least not yet. Mr. Marcus is an incredible interviewer who manages to get all of these historical figures to really talk in depth of their experiences. Some of the stories are funny, many are intense, some are quite sad, all are educational. At the end of the book, there is a summation of everyone and where they are today. At the end of each podcast, the author also gives a summation of where these people are today (the bulk of the interviews were originally done between 1988 and 1990, I believe). For people who were so very alive during these interviews with Mr. Marcus, it is truly heartbreaking to see how many are no longer with us. But their contributions remain and this book does a spectacular job of capturing each and every one.

What makes this history so important to me is that it is based on interviews of those who were directly involved with the events that have shaped our current understanding of ourselves and our political position within the US. Reading this book was both an emotionally moving and consciousness raising experience as i listened to multiple voices present their perspective on their efforts to bring about positive change for LGBT people. There is an earlier version of the book which took a slightly different approach in its ordering of the interviews. The newest release of the book covers the new millennia and presents the interviews in the order of the events they discuss. I feel the new ordering is one of the things that helps makes this book more readable than the original, so, make certain you get the latest, updated, version. This book and The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.(Book review): An article from: The Historian are the two books i recommend to friends who want to learn about LGBT history. The two books are complements in that The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.(Book review): An article from: The Historian covers in detail one period of LGBT history that has been all but lost, yet, it was important in driving the events presented in Making Gay History far more than the Stonewall incident.

Fantastic, although I lived through the whole period, being born in 1946, I was only vaguely aware of most of this drama. As an out and married to my husband gay man, I endured 27 yrs of hetero/marriage first because it was the thing to do. We have come a long way and this history has brought a lot of memories into perspective. I have a much deeper pride in being gay thanks to this book. I recommend it.

This should be required reading for all Americans before they graduate from high school. This, too, is our nation's history, not just the decision making processes of a bunch of privileged white men.Another facet of the jewel that is the multi-cultural joy of America!

This was just was I was looking for -- real INFORMATION instead of opinion, so I learned a lot from this. I definitely need to read it again. It was a little hard to follow because it seemed like the print version would have been much easier to follow. It seems like sections are continued on unexpected pages, kind of like reading a newspaper article continued on another page. On the electronic version, it was a little hard to follow that. However, I completely treasure this book for the information it gave that I could not find elsewhere.

This wonderful book, which gave birth to the famous podcast by the same name, recounts the early gay rights movement, not through dry recitals but as the colorful, interesting, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking stories of those who lived it. Any fan of history or of people will enjoy the book.

A beautiful example of storytelling through the lens of autobiographical experiences. I loved hearing about the lgbtq rights movement through the voices of so many varied people.

Absolutely essential history, told in the stories of the fascinating, lovely people who made it and lived it. As important now as it ever was.
