It's about time we had a good history of these beautiful, architectural masterpieces!When people arrive in Shanghai, one of the first places on their sight-seeing list is usually the "Bund." As people wander down this fabled road, enjoying the architecture and scenery, few know the names of these lovely facades or the often interesting history behind them. And even many of us who live here have had to stop and ponder, what exactly is a "bund"?"Bund" is not a German word, as is often thought, but is of Hindustani origin. The word means an artificial causeway or embankment. Shanghai's bund began its development in the 1850s. By the 1860s, Shanghai actually had four bunds. These four roads, or "Wai Tan" ("outer shore" in Chinese), demarcated the sides of the British settlement--which served as the center of foreign life in the city. Now days the city is down to only one "Bund" road, which was officially named Zhongshan Road Number One (east) in 1945.This legendary causeway has been one of the city's most modern areas for much of its recent history, showcasing the latest architectural designs and taking tourists who were expecting charming pagodas by surprise. wonderful trove of photo illustrations (magnifying glass often needed) makes this cute little book an architecture fan's dream, with nifty details about building restorations. but general historical info is spotty, sketchy, insufficient & poorly written, full of bad grammar & vocabulary howlers. on the scene in shanghai (which i am not) this could be a useful book, altho it mysteriously lacks a really comprehensive map!it is very, very pretty & lots of fun to poke thru, with a long bedshelf-life. but a very disappointing missed opportunity for a serious, interesting text.

Despite the Western styles of architecture, the Bund is very much a part of China's history, with all that is good and bad.Peter Hibbard's book tells the richly populated story of the Bund's development from the late 1800s, when Shanghai was the West's gateway into China near the mouth of the Yangtze River. Capital investment flooded into the area (much as it is doing today). The merchant banking and trading houses went up in grand style - neo-Gothic, classic European, Art Deco - using enormous quantities of often expensive materials from China, Europe and America. And a wildly extravagant social life blossomed, with balls, festivals and big-name entertainers from the West. I too was a media-savvy person and believed the talking points of the American corporate press and was on board with our Middle East policy. However. the brutality of the attack on Gaza last summer compelled me to dig deeper. I could not understand how a people who believe they are God’s chosen people and who suffered unspeakable brutality during the Holocaust, could wreak such death and destruction on a suppressed people with no Army, no Navy and no Air Force and who had nothing at all to do with the Holocaust..I started by Googling words like Belfour Declaration, the Irgun, the Nakba, the Stern Gang, King David Hotel, Plan Dalet, “mowing the lawn” and USS Liberty, to mention just a few. A new narrative started to emerge. It was a narrative that was very discomforting and at odds with what I had so firmly believed.Along the way I came across this book, which succinctly summarized and documented all I had discovered by Googling individual terms.If you have a hard time believing what is written in this book do your own research. The Zionist goal is to seize as much Palestinian land as possible even if it required the extermination of the Palestinians people on that land—Plan Dalet. It appears that Israel was born of death and destruction by Zionist terrorist groups—an inconvenient and discomforting truth.Albert Einstein was so incensed by this travesty, he wrote a letter to the NYT in which he presciently warned us against the Zionist fascists. ( You can read it online.) This is a " must read" book for those interested in understanding why we give Israel over 3 billion dollars a year in military aid..

I couldn’t put this book down. Alison has truly done her research and what she’s found is not good.As a Christian, this book was hard to accept given the sacred status of Jews in the Bible... but the true prophets of old always brought to light Israel’s indiscretions and called her to repent!This book is easy to read but hard to swallow. Very informative and sad to know that so many are deceived...

Weir writes an extremely well documemted account of the US role in the creation of Israel. This is a must read for all Jewish US citizens who want to know more on the topic, especially the roles played by Brandise Frankfurter and Truman, whose actions are not particularly on the public domain.

This book is essentially a history – generally not known – of Zionist bullying of American politicians, and Americans, in order to bring about the state of Israel, covering the period 1889-1949. The vast number of citations and references (covering 136 pages in a book of only 229 pages) indicates that this book is not an anti-Semitic rant, but rather a well researched history of the subject.The author covers not only the bullying of American politicians (Truman, in particular), but also lies presented to the American public about the Zionists’ true agenda. I applaud the author for staying well-clear of suggesting that the “Holocaust” was used for propaganda, but at pg. 30 she hints to the possibility. Obviously, saying more on this subject might have caused her book (like so many others) to be “banned by Amazon”. (Can’t find “Debating the Holocaust” by Dr. Thomas Dalton on Amazon? Just Google the title, and take the red pill. Also try “Dissolution of Eastern European Jewry” by W. Sanning – another red pill. See last paragraph of review for “red pill” reference.)As of the time of my review, there are already 525 other reviews. I reviewed the one-star reviews (14%), and found most to be just attacks on the author, with very few offering legitimate criticism of the historical research presented by the author.My only complaint about this book is with respect to the so-called “Endnotes” (109 pages, against only 93 pages of primary text). Most of the (373) “Endnotes” are in fact citations. The author should have separated actual “endnotes” from “citations”, and placed each in separate sections, as trying to read the book and follow the informative material in the “Endnotes” was a major distraction for me.Red pill: To quote from "Morpheus" in the movie "The Matrix": “You take the red pill … and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember: all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.” I recommend taking the red pill.

An excellent book. A must read for anyone starting out in ZFS. For the new people, however, do be aware that this book (as the title suggests) focuses on FreeBSD. There are differences in how things work at the nitty gritty level between FreeBSD, Linux, and MacOS. This is great if you're working with an appliance like FreeNAS, but if you're trying to roll your own Linux based NAS with ZFS backing the storage, understand that you may run into certain differences. Disk formatting, and encryption being two examples.Can you get this information from various posts around the Internet? Sure. You can also get a lot of misinformation around the Internet. For $10 or $25, why not get the information straight from the source?

This book has many useful, practical, and above all contemporary ZFS tactics and strategies in it. It is well organized, and is cogently written in a clear and conversational style. It shows the basics of applying ZFS on FreeBSD, but can also be used on systems like Solaris and OpenIndie. There is also an advanced book comming soon. I think they should have concentrated on a more tutorially-presented sequencing, and with more thoughtfully developed and interconnected examples. If the book is going to be a reference source for you, it's great. As a tutorial, it has some shortcomings, IMHO.Just as an aside at this point, you can use the man pages on zfs and zpool, and Google for more important and useful details, tutorials, and context about ZFS than this book provides. Then again, you have to wade through a lot of extraneous material when you do that!For instance, in Chapter 3 on zpools, they start off with using 6 hardware providers(vdevs) in a pool that they say are hard disks. The labeling of the disks as vdevs is not clear. How many people can use 6 separate hard drives on a prototype or test machine? So they develop several examples using those vdevs in multiple pools, yet they show how to destroy a pool only at the end of the chapter! To sequence all of their examples so that someone could do them in the order presented, the zpool destroy command should have been shown in the beginning of the chapter, right after the first zpool create. You cannot proceed from the zpool create on page 56 to the remaining pools in that chapter without destroying the pools as you go along. One GEOM provider per vdev, one zpool per vdev! The rule for me is one vdev mapped to one pool. When I do a basic Install of FreeBSD or PC-BSD on a whole disk, that disk as a storage provider cannot have another pool on it- the default pool tank is mapped to the whole root or system disk.So as recommended in this book, during my initial install of the system, I could partition the hard disk into a system partition with the OS and ZFS on it, and then add other zpools on other partitons of one hard disk. Smart idea from a couple of perspectives.Just as a footnote to this discussion, online Googled and other beginning zpool tutorial examples use files as vdevs, much more realistic for introductory work, although not recommended in practice. I have routinely used USB thumbdrives as vdevs, mirrored them and done many of the basic zfs and zpool tactics on the USB thumbdrives, on all three OS's I run.Also, on page 24 in the Virtual Devices chapter, they say to use partitions as a storage provider. That is an interesting and contermporary performance advantage in FreeBSD and PC-BSD (not so in Solaris and OpenIndiana). They even give you a heads up that deleting vdevs from a zpool, and shrinking zpools will be included in later releases of FreeBSD (and by extension PC-BSD), and probably in Solaris and OpenIndie too. Like I said, very contemporary.I use ZFS on both PC-BSD and Solaris, and have used it on OpenIndiana. It's pretty much the same on all three systems. My computer hardware is HP Microserver, Dell Poweredge server, and Dell Inspiron laptop. The laptop with only one hard drive in it can have zfs copies set to 2 so there is some redundancy on that single hard drive.In summary, there should be some linear consistency or sequential development of the examples in a chapter, starting at one place with one command, and step -by -step moving to a more complex state, through related commands working on the same vdevs, pools, or datasets as you started with. I found the examples are too fragmented (if that's a good word for it), perhaps good for reference but not for a tutorial presentation.

All of this information is readily available scattered across many different corners of the project pages, blogs, and man pages. This is a great first read if you are looking at getting into ZFS, however, if you're already an advanced user you may learn a few minor things or tricks that you missed along the way.If I hadn't been watching BSDNow (with Alan Jude) I'm sure I would have gotten more from this book as there is some bleed over.

There are man pages, and there is hard fought knowledge. This book is the latter. It is written for human beings, by human beings, based on real-life experience. Equally important is that these guys know how to teach, which, is a rare trait in tech. ZFS will change your life as a sysadmin.

Michael Lucas continues to impress with the technical quality and readability of his IT Mastery series. All manner of ZFS usage, configuration and maintenance is covered with just the right depth and concise to-the-point language. I will soon own all of Lucas' technical works. This is not an exhaustive architectural documentation, which it shouldn't be, but will have you on your way to correctly leveraging ZFS' amazing technology in short time.

Excellent book on ZFS. I've been using ZFS casually for a few years now, and there is a lot of material I didn't know in this book. It's also useful for other operating systems that include ZFS.The coverage of snapshots and enabling extra features is just the right length. It's informative and not boring.

Great book, interesting topic and easy to follow.

I believe this is a must read book for sysadmins, it also shows a little bit from the power of open source.Enjoy!

Maybe they will fix some of the major issues in another print/edition, but the one I got was poorly written. In one particular case they mix up the parties--calling one the Defendant who was in reality the Plaintiff, and calling the Plaintiff the Defendant. Just reading makes it confusing. Some of the rules are poorly restated as well. Additionally, I think this books should implement some of the notes the Laylock places in the textbook as they are extremely valuable--maybe more so than the cases in some areas. However, I do not hold that against the compilers of this book as that is not its intended purpose, but I have seen it in other Casenotes books, and it would be very effective in this one.Overall, I think it probably largely helps, but do not use it as a full-bore supplement without giving it a skeptical eye. If it were less expensive, I probably would toss another couple of stars on, but at the end of the day, I just simply do not use it. A new student in paralegal school would identify serious flaws in this, let alone a lowly law student.

This was an awesome study tool, since I had no clue what the professor decided the ultimate rules of the cases were in class. This Casenotes product provides the facts, issue, holding, rule, and any additional analysis that the Casenotes editors deemed necessary, including important terminology. I wish I had purchased this at the beginning of the semester to prepare for class, but this book made it very easy to drop each rule from the Casenotes brief into my outline at the end of the semester.I felt like one or two of the "rules" were not keyed to remedies, which seemed odd. Obviously, the cases discussed in the casebook could touch multiple issues, but the rules we take away in a remedies class should be remedies-focused.

For my Remedies class (which was "rule" heavy), this was all I needed. Casenotes legal briefs are excellent: they contain the pertinent facts, the rule, and the holding. Additionally, I love the summary of the rules at the beginning of each chapter.

I've had my book for a few weeks now and can't stop going through and remembering. Beautiful photographs. There is nor ever has been anything else like this book. Get yourself a copy and give one to someone you know will Love it as well.

This is somewhat of a disappointment, especially considering the price. I am a professional photographer myself, and I realize that art is subjective. My opinion is, much more effort seemed to go into the way the book itself was designed. Most of his photography in this collection is not amazing, unusual or thought provoking. Also, the pictures were purposely arranged to make the book longer and larger, thus the justification, I suppose, to sell it for $50 or more. I am deep into R&B, Soul and psychedelic music and know these artists. I was just dismayed to see such ordinary images of them. I hesitated so long before I put out the money for this book. Money wasted. Very sad.

Gorgeous, rich images that capture an era that will never be forgotten with this tome.

Nothing will explain how my dad looked when he opened this book up. It took him back to an amazing time in his life and started a conversation that would have not occurred without it. This book covered his favorite music, from his favorite era, with his favorite artists. Now we both own copies.

Absolutely beautiful photographs!. I was overcome with nostalgia seeing all those magnificent R&B, Funk and Soul artists in their prime. Also, Taschen produces high quality well manufactured books.

The pictures are great!

As a pediatrician, I found the information about hormone-disrupting chemicals that impact children's health illuminating. This will certainly impact the way I think about anticipatory guidance. As a mother of an 8 month old, I found the practical tips for avoiding exposures empowering (using glass over plastic, how to look at labels). It's a scientist's advice on how to live healthfully in this world, and how to make it better.

The book, Sicker Fatter Poorer is simply excellent. It alerts people to the threats to their health from hormone-disrupting chemicals strewn throughout the environment.It begins with two Red Alerts: One, The basic biology and physiology of kids have been altered in one or two generations. Two, Studies have shown that environmental exposures can modify the expression of genes, leading to diseases and dysfunctions. These are solid reasons for young parents to read the book.Flame retardants are a sad tale of the power of industries and the slowness of government health agencies in responding. TRIS may be as bad as the brominated diphenyl ethers they replaced. A tip for readers: It is possible to buy furniture and children’s bedding without flame retardants – look for a label indicating their absence.The critique of the FDA’s so called CLARITY study of Bisphenol-A is worth the price of the book. Unfortunately, the chemical versatility of Bisphenol-A puts it in a large number of household products, even though its dangerous hormone-mimicking properties have been known for decades.The author points out that the basis for assuming that low-level pesticide exposures are safe to human is fatally flawed. He also point out that the evidence for the ability of organophosphate pesticides to disrupt thyroid function is as convincing as the evidence for lead poisoning – that is, beyond dispute.The increasing prevalence of obesity and type-2 diabetes in children is most alarming, and the book describes a convincing link to prenatal and early childhood exposures to pesticides, Bisphenol-A and phthalates. Obstetricians and pediatricians should talk to young mothers about this insidious danger.

This is a fantastic read! The science is accessible and I appreciate the practical tips for reducing exposures. Sometimes thinking about all the hidden dangers lurking in our air, food, water, etc. can be overwhelming, especially when early life exposures can have negative impacts on health for the rest of our lives. For this reason, I really appreciate the author’s optimism and also have hope that we can collectively make a difference.

An honest presentation of facts; does not lecture and points out opposing opinions as well as the author’s and lets the reader draw their own conclusions. Technical data but presented in a reader friendly and understandable format. Reminds us we must look at this topic from both sides. Well done!

This book is by a brilliant Harvard educated pediatrician who has done important research on the health and economic impacts of common environmental exposures that are impacting the health of our children, as well as adults. It is great overview of the science of endocrine-disrupting chemicals and the ways in which they are affecting our health for the worse plus practical advice for how to reduce exposure to them to protect yourself and your family. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in how environmental exposures are affecting our health and how to make changes in your life that will help prevent diseases ranging from ADHD to diabetes to cancer. We just listened to the audio book and already we are making changes to how we handle things in our home, like food storage. Highly recommended.
