If you love horses and understand the bond that occurs between you and your horse...or if you desire to have that bond, you will love this book. I almost gave it four stars because, in my estimation, only one thing was missing; there are very few pictures in this book. Why do we not see more of what the book is telling us.; the winding miles of fence at Meadow Farm or Claiborne, Secretariat at play, at work, the faces of the people the author speaks about, etc? (If, by chance, they are located in the back of the book (I am reading the Kindle version and this review comes before the acknowledgements, etc. If there are pictures in the back, then please forgive me) I'm just sad about not being able to enjoy some of those photos of which the author speaks.This has whetted my appetite to read more about Secretariat (which I thought I knew already but so many more to learn) This books pulled a lot of emotion from me and I appreciated the author's desire to not only tell a story of Secretariat but of the unknown, seldom celebrated story of a man almost lost to the pages of time, Eddie Sweat...Secretariat's groom during the glory years. What a beautiful picture which has been painted by Mr. Scanlan of that man who loved "his" horse. Mr. Scanlan is a horse owner also and he states his desire to become a better horseman because of what he learned about the devotion of Mr. "Shorty" Sweat to "the Horse God Built."I was 18 the year Secretariat won the Triple Crown; I would be graduating HS in a few weeks. Too busy with my own horse in the way of any horse-crazy girl who lives and breathes the equine, I did not follow Thoroughbred racing though I could tell you, loving all things HORSE, the Triple Crown winners and the year they won. I owned a quarter horse named Barzal Bravo ("Bozo" for short) with thoroughbred racing blood making up half his pedigree. Helping my horse-centered world along, my family lived in the same equestrian subdivision as several of the Los Alamitos Race Course trainers and their "lay off" horses. I was often at those early morning workouts at the track with my horsey girlfriends; ethereal moments about which the author writes. My bedroom walls were covered with the daily race results from Los AL. Because I did not have access to much money on my own and most of what I did earn went to support my own horse's upkeep, I did not buy magazines or books to read and thus knew very littleabout this new "Big Red"...plus, I was a Man O' War purist in my heart. However, everyone had heard of Secretariat and I became a believer after watching him win the Derby and Preakness. As the day of the Belmont arrived, my parents had taken us camping. I only agreed to go if my dad made sure we had a working TV to watch the race. As Secretariat rounded the last turn pulling away, my emotions spilled out. As an equine artist, I appreciate the beauty of the horse and this was a thing of beauty...and history. I knew I was watching it being made right in front of me! I screamed! I jumped up in the air. Then as Big Red swept toward the finish line with the cameras struggling to even show the other horses in the race, I laid on the floor and wept like a baby.To this day I cannot watch that race without those emotions welling up inside me and weeping outloud...for the beauty, that wonderful horse, the history, his death and my youth long gone but remembered for a shining moment. Much like other transcendent moments in history when one can remember where theybwere or what they were doing, I

What a wonderful idea, to focus some well-deserved attention on Eddie Sweat, and all the people who work behind the scenes in the racing world. Unfortunately, the book promises more than it delivers, partly due, no doubt, to the fact that Eddie is dead, and any portrait drawn of him relies on second and third-hand accounts. But the book also falls short because of a lack of cohesiveness and structure. Add to that, numerous digressions about the author himself, and it's hard to maintain focus. I also found it a little ironic, in a sad way, that a book about someone who was overlooked, and kept in the background, overlooks Eddie's OTHER great horse, Riva Ridge. I understand the focus was supposed to be on the relationship between Eddie and Secretariat, but do you really think Eddie's pain didn't involve parting from Riva as well? Eddie himself makes it clear how he feels when he talks about going back to Claiborne, and how happy he was when Secretariat AND Riva greeted him. It would have taken only a paragraph or two to give a little consideration to Secretariat's stable-mate. After all, the author certainly gave more space than that to a number of other horses.By the way, if you want to get a sense of what Eddie was like, you can find a video of him with Riva Ridge on YouTube. It's only about five minutes long, but it's wonderful. Search Riva Ridge and Keeneland.

As a person who has been enamored with horses...I loved watching the Triple Crown races since I was a little kid. I fell in love with Big Red the moment I laid eyes on him. More important, I was in awe of the man who was able to take care of him. This book fills in all the information I could only imagine! A great read of the love between a great horse and the man who made and loved him.

As the author states in his epilogue, he starts to write mostly about Secretariat.... and ends up interweaving the story of this horse's favorite person, his groom Eddie "Shorty" Sweat.Well worth the read, this book makes a very compelling argument for the respectful treatment of the horses we encounter and the people entrusted with their care and even more, their well-being.I highly recommend this story.

Very interesting. I didn't know much about the world of horse racing, so the details were all interesting to me. The relationship between Secretariat and his groom, Eddie Sweat, was very touching. I think any animal lover would like this book. I gave a copy as a gift, and that person loved the book as well.

This book was probably unnecessary.It is often rambling and frequently repetive. Poor quality of photographs doesn't help.I expected to find more anecdotes about the horse's day to day, maybe collected and shared by his special groom, Eddie Sweat, and others from shed row.Indeed, I've read a about a few examples of the Big Red's antics that aren't included here.There was too much about Eddie's family circumstances, on whether or not he received his due financially, too much about other famous horses, etc. Too much about the man, too little about the horse.

I read this back to back 2 times. It is that good! Very poignant and sad sometimes - especially at the end. Absolutely fascinating with the relationship between Secretariat and his groomer Eddie. It made me search on-line more videos and history of the great horse. This book really captures and describes Secretariat's character and playful personality. I highly highly reccomend this book to any and all horse fans and especially Secretariat lovers.

Pathetic excuse for a PR book. Stacks' word choice and attempts to explain different concepts are absolutely terrible. It's almost as if he wants confuse readers so as to prove his PR "intelligence" and make his field of study seem reserved for the academic and professional "elite." Get over yourself, Mr. Stacks. Try speaking like a human. You might actually enjoy it. So if you're wanting to learn more about PR and PR research, this book isn't for you. But if self-important authors, convoluted concepts, and wasted time are your thing, you've found an absolute masterpiece.

I bought this in preparation for the APR test. It has a lot of good information and I use it regularly.

The book was in decent condition but nothing close to the description. The book is marked up extensively with pens and markers, which is rather distracting. The book is much higher priced than other used books, so this level of usage is not really acceptable.

First let me confess that I am a print journalism professor in a communication department that is top-heavy with public relations and broadcast students. However in addition to being responsible for building a state-of-the-art print journalism program at my mid-sized university, I also have the enjoyment of teaching a communication theory course to upperclasspersons and a survey course in mass communications to freshmen, exploratory and non-communication students. (I even once actually went over to the "dark side" and taught PR writing one semester.) With that confession out on the table, I offer a second one; once I started reading Primer of Public Relations, I could not put it down, because it is timely, interdisciplinary, and filled with bottom-line strategies for producing "return on investment" research that will continue to strengthen communications as a discipline in higher education. Professors who teach theory or research methods may find Primer helpful as a supplementary text. Graduate PR students conducting research may also find it invaluable. For me, one of the most select ways to evaluate Don Stacks' timely book was to examine the traditional image of public relations in relation to journalism and media studies and also to re-visit the emerging place of research in public relations. Although the book deserves high marks for its writing style, at times it still falls into the conservative writing style that is too common in research literature. Inserting a few colorfully anecdotes or narratives may broaden its appeal and make it more student-friendly. In addition, as an African American professor, I found the book lacking frontline examples of diversity that would possibly lengthen its shelf life with scholars and practitioners interested in this as a research area. However, Stacks has demonstrated that much like advertising and journalism, public relations has become more research oriented in recent years.

He does this by intertwining scientific dialogues with graphic images, personal anecdotes, and interesting analogies.On one level, Climate Changed provides its readers with an overload of scientific information. Squarzoni quotes myriad scientists and researchers to present the reader with all of the research he has come across which he believes is essential for the readers to know. At times, these sections of the book dragged on and felt repetitive. However, I realize that this component of the book is entirely crucial for attaining a clear sense of what climate change truly is and how much it can affect our lives. With that being said, it felt to me that these sections of the book were not necessarily incorporated well with the “graphic novel” concept. Seeing 10 panels in a row of a scientist giving his or her statement about various aspects of climate change looked boring and bland in graphic form. I would not like to see this aspect of the book cut out entirely, though I would like to see the repetitive parts (the parts about nuclear energy and social inequality in a climate-changed world felt excruciatingly long to me) trimmed down a bit, and I would have liked to see a more graphically creative way of blending these sections into the book.On the other hand, there is the “personal journey” aspect of Climate Changed. In these sections of the book, Squarzoni tells his own story of how he approached the idea of writing about climate change. In addition, he talks about the changes that he personally makes in order to help the planet (e.g. limiting himself to one flight per year) and the difficulties that arise from this self-restraint. To me, these sections of the book felt much more visceral for numerous reasons. The graphics and images of his trips to America or his comparisons to movies and novels were much more captivating than merely images of French scientists sitting at a desk and spewing out facts. Additionally, in these sections Squarzoni was able to take difficult topics and break them down to a level which anyone could easily comprehend. He used analogies to a dish being pushed over the edge of a table or a man skydiving sans parachute to really illustrate the direness of this situation. Finally, hearing one man tell of how to make a personal change just seems much more convincing than hearing a scientist present us only with statistics and facts. In the personal journey sections, Squarzoni was truly able to bring this climate change narrative to life and leave an impact on the readers.In the end, there is no definitive answer to the climate change problem. However, this book provides readers with the necessary facts in order to make informed environmentally conscious decisions in life. While I cannot say that Squarzoni or any of the scientists he quotes have convinced me to ditch my car and go live simplistically out in the woods like Henry David Thoreau, I certainly feel inspired to try to make a series of small yet positive changes in life. While Climate Changed may not have been an entirely engrossing read, I would consider it severely important for anyone who wishes to be more aware about the global climate change issue.

While this graphic novel may fail people looking for a comic book in the way most comic books are written, it truly tackles the complexity of climate change and all the nuances that are apart of it, in a fairly easy-to-read format. If you need a movie comparison, it is a little bit like Koyaanisqatsi, but narrated by Werner Herzog. If it falters, it is perhaps a little too introspective as the scientist author voices his doubts and ponders great unknowns. All in all, I appreciate it very much, and found it to be a very human look at science from a man on the inside, with all the data in front of him.I have personally recommended it to an ecologist professor who uses excerpts for some of his classes. There is a considerable amount of detail here -- it goes way beyond carbon emissions, and looks at many factors behind the rise of global temperatures, as well as the far reaching impacts climate change will have on the planet.

I had to search for this graphic book on the climate crisis. And found this gem--500 pages of exquisite drawings, distilled conversations with leading scientists in economics, climate research, energy, and political thinking. In addition the author reports and shows his personal feelings, conflicts and ambivalences as he discovers the terrible truths of our changed world. The take home message for me now, in 2015, is that we can't undo the climate changes already in place but we have to work hard and smart to keep the crisis from becoming even worse.

We are all a part of this issue, and when one begins to see real, tangible ways that it impacts our day-to-day lives, climate change becomes less of a thing to shrug off and more of a threat to our species’ existence. Even if you do not like his story or approach you still have to appreciate how effective he is at getting his point across.

I use this book as a textbook for my college class that I teach on Artist Management. It is excellent. The author has done a good job updating it. My only complaint is that more space should be devoted to functioning in the "indie" world, which is where most artists spend their time. Many indies will never have the issue of having a manager who ALSO has a business manager. If you reach that level, then you're doing better than 99.9% of artists in the world. Most artists just want to get paid after a gig. So, I feel like each chapter should have a section for "major label world" and "indie world". Other than that, the book is comprehensive and accurate. It is an excellent authoritative source from which to teach.

I had a friend last year who was breaking into the music business and needed help. I had prior education in music industry, but as time went on...I needed information. She stated that she was going to need a manager and wanted me. Having never managed an artist before, I started studying. I ordered several books including this one to update and expand my knowledge.It's great! This book has the basis of everything a person breaking into artist management would need to get started. It has chapters on contracts, promotion, networking, and other things you really should know. I learned a lot. It also has sample contracts in the back that could be used as templates.I highly recommend it for anyone looking to work in any aspect of the industry. The friendship was a casualty to personal issues, but this book will remain in my library for future use.

It's an excellent overview for aspiring artists and managers alike, and it's full of advice and wisdom. Anyone studying this business would do well to begin their focused education here, if only to establish a working vocabulary for the industry. The end of each chapter provides an extensive list of resources for continued reading as well. If you read this, also read the books listed in the resource section of each chapter for an extensive self-education. There's nothing quite like a common vocabulary for efficient communication between all the facets of the music industry.

While I enjoyed both the book and the audio, the overall book seemed less developed than the past three on Kolt Raynor. In some ways the action was non-stop but at the same time, there were sequences which could have added to the story that were glossed over. For instance, it was never explained how the North Korean that Kolt was sent to rescue had as much specific information about the nukes and missile sites. In a country where secrecy and paranoia are practically a religion, this would have helped create additional depth. The two themes concerning Hawk and the combining of the unit with ST6 were sometimes covered well and at others sketchy. However, I did enjoy the book and hope his next is better written.

As long as we waited for this book to come out it seems poorly written. A couple more scrubs through the editor may have made some incoherent parts better.The story, really a very short plot. Almost played out like a bad action movie. Suit case nukes threaten the pacific fleet and kolt raynor, the squadron commander has to get the guy who may know something about them. Just seemed thin and less developed than past books. The real action in this book was glossed over. Could there not have been a hundred more pages on the SEALS, or the extraction or the actual resolve of the over arching plot? Nah, 4Pages here and there about one characters unimportant thoughts. Hope for a better plot next time

Great book! This series continues with Racer doing his own thing again this time trying to rescue a North Korean who has information on nukes that have targeted on our ships and West coast. I'm happy to see Hawk, Slap and Digger back on this adventure. There is so much action and different scenes taking place that to describe them all would take too much time, I highly recommend you read these books in order to get a feel for all the characters.

As usual this is another excellent book. In an effort to help improve the series I would like to focus on two issues that drive me nuts. The first is the one needles dialog and sometimes repetitive detail about what some one is wearing or seeing. The only benefit is I get to skip pages.The other thing is the poor editing for timeline. As one example the Korean with the teletype. The description of having to dust it off not having been used in years when in fact it was the third message sent from that machine in a sort time. Someone wasn't doing there job. This happens other times in the book. It's like someone won't take the time for a final read to insure flow. A similar timeline issue on the chopper.

Fury certainly knows how to spin a tale. His books are nearly nonstop action. However, that being said, Dalton forgets who his audience is.I'm a 20 year military vet, and even i can't understand huge portions of the book. Dalton seems to assume that his readers consist of Seals or Delta. He uses language that only they would understand, with absolutely no explanation given to the average reader.Dalton, if you truly want to be a successful author, LEARN and understand who your readers are.

Dalton Fury [nom de plume] delivers again a fast paced powerful story that is both hard to put down but rather uncomfortable in that it portrays a world that the mass media chooses to ignore.It makes one appreciate the tier one men and women who are fighting for us in the shadows.I found it left me as always in admiration of our warriors and disgusted with our politicos in and out of the military who seek only to advance their careers. Be in no doubt this is a true action novel with I presume more truth than fiction.

Like everything else he writes... personally I'd give it a 4.5 because it's not as good as the first three but still great. It's sad he passed away. I hope he has a friend who can take over who is just as creative who can write just as good as him.R.I.P. Dalton Fury

I really loved this book. Vlad and Chloe are magnificent together. Vlad saves Chloe. She is unsure of him at first but as she settles down from the shock and really takes a moment to appreciate Vlad; it is inst-lust and love and so much more. This was a unique story but it did grab me from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. Great book by a magnificent author.

I am very impressed with this His Captive Virgin book. This book is really well organized! I loved this book. I thought it was a well thought out! I especially appreciate the Her Most Prized Possession. I feel as if I'm an expert now! The book was written in an exceedingly clear, simple to understand format. This is not only the best book I've ever read in terms of storywriting, but honestly the best book I've read in general.Definitely worth the read, you can tell this was written by an advanced level scriptwriter. Not on sentence doesn't have some significance to the entire book and concepts being explained. highly recommended this book for everyone.

Too unreal to capture or keep my attention. Ethan was a class A jerk and he never changed. I skipped over much of it hoping he would turn into a nicer guy but nope, never did.

This is an interesting novel that I loved to read.All of the details, scenes, and stories that I need to know about how to get what I want are already included and well written inside. Sylvia Tara Dyer has done an incredible awesome job in compiling and creating this book.Overall, this book is great and worth reading!

This book is awesome. I slanted such tremendous quantities of effective things from this book. An astonishing novel which is about his hostage virgin, prevailing alpha male sentiment. This sentimental novel is described impeccably which propelled me to peruse every one of this book page. I truly appreciated this novel, suggested.
