Everything the other reviewers have said is true, this is a wonderful story that will transport you straight out of the rat race and into nature. About a quarter way through, I was getting really curious about the snail, so I let my Kindle finger tap me to a video on YouTube that definitely 3D'd the snail for me. Just search for True Facts About Land Snails. Not your typical junior high science video! As the video and Ms. Bailey prove, those little guys really have a life. And so does she. Nice.

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating4What I thought I was going to be reading:I read this at the same time I began listening to another similarly themed nature memoir, “H is for Hawk.” I have not read any other nature memoirs, so I don’t have much of a background for the genre itself. I do, however, tend to enjoy personal memoirs, especially ones with emotional turmoil and grief. I saw that this was a rather quick read, so I downloaded the e-book and started reading. What I actually read:The book focuses on one woman’s journey to some semblance of recovery after experiencing a debilitating international infection that left her almost all the way paralyzed. The narrator receives a pet snail from a friend while she is at home on bed rest. The chapters switch from the author’s observations of the snail to actual scientific explanations of snails as a species to stories of the author’s illness and recovery. The author finds comfort in her observations of the snail, as she fights through mental and physical isolation. What to expect:This memoir offers a nice balance of scientific description on snails and a personal narrative of the author’s life and recovery. This was a light read, with chapters being only a few pages long. I enjoyed learning about snails and their habits and how the author weaves her story into her observations of her companion snail.

This is a review of The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. This book is extremely near and dear to my heart. I have never felt more like I may have written this book in another life. It is the story that I wish that I had had the bravery to tell about my own dealings with my health and autonomic dysfunction. It is startlingly endearing and brings to light many questions about our narrator that never get answered, however- it is a satisfying non-fiction story about a woman struggling to survive an illness that is eating away at her body and soul. One day and friend visits her on her sickbed and gives her a momentous gift: a potted violet with a small brown garden snail hidden in it's soil. The author is shocked to find it and realizes that this small gastropod is the only pet she could dream of being able to take care of in this moment. She then proceeds to study The Snail in a way that is deeply meaningful and scholarly and, most of all, poetic. It is not a book of poetry, but more like a field guide or naturalists story about a small but mighty creature that has a surprisingly deep way of touching your heart. I would give this book 5 stars, but that may be because of personal bias, having found it extremely hard to find books about people like myself. I would recommend it to lovers of fiction and non-fiction alike. This tranquil tale is best enjoyed with a large cup of chamomile tea while sitting in the garden.-Rosey the Reader.

Well, I finished reading "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating" by Elizabeth Tova Bailey. All I can say is everyone should read this book, and EVERY page of it - from the quotes, to prologue, each chapter, epilogue and appendix. The book starts with one of my favorite quotes about loving your questions and living in the answers, even when they are unclear. The book then shares the intimate thoughts and observations of a woman finds friendship with a woodland snail as she is forced to face changes in her life and body when she gets a chronic debilitating disease. Those who live with a chronic illness will hear their own voice in the author's words and experiences, while all the readers can learn the every day lessons of this snail.Lessons in life about slowing down to see and hear the littlest of things because every moment matters. Lessons reminding us that every living creature is here for a reason, even a person who is broken by pain and illness and living life at a snail's pace. And lessons of change, as something we battle, adapt to, survive and actually live through.

Elisabeth Tova Bailey was struck down, quite literally, by a virus. She spent long months unable to even turn over in bed without exhausting herself. She spent those months in a room with a window she couldn't see out of and surrounded by plain white walls. Her only solace came from a friend who inexplicably picked up a woodland snail and brought it to Bailey in a pot of wild violets. She became fascinated by this small mollusk. She spent hours observing it, and led by questions arising from her observation, she spent more hours reading heavy tomes about molluscan biology. She even became the first person known to witness a snail tending its eggs. Eventually, she was well enough to convalesce at home, and she chose to have the snail returned to its natural home, too. She missed it.The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is Elisabeth Tova Bailey's account of her time with the snail (she never gave it a name) and her illness. She shares her observations, her musings, and a bit about how she felt. Rather than being the morbid account of a bed-bound victim, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a creature most of us would never notice. The sound? Bailey describes it as little teeth nibbling celery.
