This is a book about underwater photography from one of the leaders in this area. I found this book clear, with a lot of amazing photos, and nice "case studies" on the behind the scenes of making some of these.I gave it only four stars, since I think that given the amount of underwater photography guides out there, a new book should decide whether it is aimed at novices, or at advanced shooters looking to hone their techniques. I felt that this book was undecisive on some. I felt it glossed on some points that are not obvious to novices, and as an advanced photographer, I learned from the book, but not as much as I expected.I usually recommend The Underwater Photographer as the goto book for learning underwater photography. As an advanced book, I felt that Winning Images with Any Underwater Camera: The essential guide to creating engaging photos taught me more.
I brought this book on my flight to Spain from NY and I can honestly say that this was worth every cent. One of the many reasons why I love this book is the way the author communicates with you and explains his process. This is not just a gallery book, it is very informative giving the reader every detail of his shooting process. After reading this it completely changed the way I viewed under water photography. It is not easy or cheap to do but if you are patient you're able to capture a fascinating world. I also like the fact that the author included his photo along with an example of where he was positioned as well and the settings he used for each shot. He also includes a summery at the end of each chapter if you wanted to quickly understand the main details. This is a great book a lot of important information for people who are looking to get better knowledge about shooting subjects underwater.
I am a recreational diver and an amateur photographer; I learned of this book on a dive trip and picked it up upon returning. The book's main audience is those with better equipment and/or greater aspirations than I however I have still enjoyed and gotten a lot from it.The chapters start with choosing photography equipment and preparing for a dive trip, then cover topics all the way through editing and archiving. Each page has a photo or graphic illustrating the matter at hand and all photos have descriptive captions with info on the camera model, lens, and settings used. The text is easy to read while conveying a lot of information and tips. In the middle of the book is a Guest Photographers Gallery for five other professionals, and these too have detailed captions.Between each chapter is a case study with a gorgeous photograph and in-depth study covering the backstory, settings considerations, a diagram of positioning, and more. All in all a great book with beautiful photos coupled with many details and tips on how to achieve them yourself. This has improved my abilities with mid-grade land cameras and even my basic underwater point-and-shoots, while tempting me to upgrade gear to advance my hobby.
Its on my top 3 underwater photography books.
Excellent book, well written and very informative. A must for starting as well as more experienced underwater photographers.
I have a close friend who is an amazing underwater photographer and for a couple of years she has bee trying to get me into the art. I have been hesitant because of my lack of knowledge on the subject. This book convinces me to get my underwater photography wings! The book is beautifully written, well composed with fantastic imagery and highly technical, yet easy to understand. If you want to expand your photography horizon or just want to improve your underwater photography this book is a MUST read.
Book Review: Underwater PhotographyReviewer background: Open water diver since 2004, hobbyist photographerThis book is great for hobbyist and enthusiast photographers who are already proficient divers(those who have buoyancy control even with added weight of camera/strobe set-up). Havingfamiliarity with basic skills of DSLR cameras is also helpful, but information related to those skillsis covered briefly in this book. The author begins by covering the necessary (as well as the not so necessary, but nice to have)gear when going on a dive trip where you plan to photograph what you see. He then covers basicsof photography before diving deeper (pun intended) into specifics of photography unique tounderwater photography. He frequently gives valuable tips on the flash/strobe direction as well ashow to position yourself to utilize the sun as backlighting. He devoted a chapter to both macroand wide angle shooting. He does touch on post processing, but this chapter is really more of anoverview rather than truly being a post processing tutorial for underwater images.I like that he included a few guest galleries and case studies. Perhaps my favorite part of the bookis the appendix where he includes several checklists to help you get prepared for this equipmentintensive endeavor. As someone who has taken thousands of photos while diving, I have continued to be unhappywith the quality of my work. After reading this book, I feel more prepared to capture what I intendto, and I have a newfound excitement to go out and put this knowledge to use.J. RupleArkansas Outdoor Photography Club.
I was given this book as a gift and found it to be extremely helpful. I am trying to make the jump from a point and shoot to a Sony A7s camera however much of the information would be useful to the novice point and shoot underwater photographer also. The appendix at the back is extremely helpful to set basic settings depending on what you are shooting. Had the pleasure of meeting and diving with the author in Lembeh Strait Indonesia recently, in person he is a fantastic resource, no wonder his book is the next best thing.
