John O’Donohue was an Irish poet, priest and philosopher, a proponent of a specific kind of Celtic spirituality which formed the lens through which his philosophy could be seen. His first and best known work is ‘Anam Cara’, published in 1997. ‘Anam cara’ is the Celtic phrase for ‘soul friend’.In a sense, this book is review proof. To anyone who has read my other reviews on fiction and non-fiction this may be seen as a departure. Personal philosophical contemplation of the big issues—life, death, eternity, etc.—are so subjective that to apply the same kind of critical analysis to them that I would apply to a novel misses the meat of the matter and becomes a stab in the air of Intellect. Just as all books are not created alike, so all reviews of those various books should also not be alike. The anam cara can be found in another person although, whether one finds THE anam cara or AN anam cara in another person or not, there is the presence that travels with the individual from birth to death. An individual’s life span, like the seasons, is a cycle. O’Donohue traces the phases of the cycle throughout the book in explorations of solitude, friendship, love and death. These are all big abstract concepts but O’Donohue brings them inside our eyelids with his intimate, poetic language.Donohue’s contemplation of the large themes is an intimate as poetry and as spiritual as any church service and yet this former priest never preaches. His pleasure in the novelties of creation and his meditations on the threshold of conscious and unconscious existence are contagious. He brought to my awareness a few insights that seem obvious except that I never thought to articulate them but here he has presented them to me.Consider what he says about the human face:“The human face carries mystery and is the exposure of the mystery of the individual life. It is where the private, inner world of a person protrudes into the anonymous world. While the rest of the body is covered, the face is naked. The vulnerability of this nakedness issues a profound invitation for understanding and compassion. The human face is a meeting place of two unknowns: the infinity of the outer world and the unchartered, inner world to which each individual alone has access…Your feet bring your private clay in touch with the ancient, mother clay from which you first emerged. Consequently, your face being at the top of your body signifies the ascent of your clay-life into intimacy and selfhood.”He invokes the cyclical view of life repeatedly. It is inherent in the fact that he was born and died a Celt:“The Celtic mind was never drawn to the single line; it avoided ways of seeing and being that seek satisfaction in certainty. The Celtic mind has a wonderful respect for the mystery of the circle and the spiral. The circle is one of the oldest and most powerful symbols. The world is a circle; the sun and moon are too. Even time itself has a circular nature; the day and the year build to a circle. At its most intimate level so is the life of the individual. The circle never gives itself completely to the eye or to the mind but offers a trusting hospitality to that which is complex and mysterious; it embraces depth and height together. The circle never reduces the mystery to a single direction or preference.”Generally, O’Donohue’s imagery and metaphor is fresh and vibrant although he does use a phrase such as ‘neon consciousness’ or ‘neon awareness’ a bit too frequently for my taste. Once was fresh; more than that the impact is diluted. He also quotes people without citation. He will write, “Dostoevsky said…” or “Goethe said” without providing the specific source of the quote. I don’t doubt O’Donohue; I believe in his integrity. I would just like to read the original for myself to see the context in which the quote appeared. Those are relatively minor quibbles. One of O’Donohue’s great achievements is to shed a fresh light on things we either take for granted or have never articulated. He presents them to us in a novel context, which is really what the best writers do for us.The chapter on death is worth the price of the book for me. It provides the wisest, most consoling, most clear-eyed outlook toward death that I have encountered. He describes the Irish mourning tradition in which women keen and provide a sad liturgy, a ritual for externalizing the loss of the departed. This is followed by the wake:“Its ritual affords the soul plenty of time to take its leave. The soul does not leave the body abruptly; this is a slow leave-taking.”He provides a calm reassurance that assuages any fear of dying that touches me more than most anything else I’ve read about death. He died unexpectedly in his sleep in 2008. The cause of death was not disclosed outside the family. Reading his calming words, I could imagine them echoing through his consciousness in his last moments. His cycle was complete.

I got this book as a gift from a man I had barely met, right in 2005 some weeks after I had been hospitalized with rampant anxiety. He sent it by snail mail, saying he felt I should have it. One of those small miracles. The book was my strength and you have to read it to understand why.John died too soon in 2008 but his spirit is as strong as ever, I feel. A few days ago my mother told me she likely has cancer again. And so I will look for quotes that may strengthen me for the coming time, whatever it may bring. I often find that I start with one that always moved me very much, although I am not sure it is his best known quote:“Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey.”Strange how this particular quote moves me. It makes me feel, as I read it, that Soul exists – that I am Soul. Not just as a concept or metaphor, but something real, yet … undefinable. And that is the power of all of John O’Donohue’s writings.I don't think I can put it better than this. John O'Donohues Anam Cara is an experience. You will have to experience it and see what it can give you. This book is thoughtful but reaches out to your feelings and invites you to reach out for them, too.

As a person of 87% Irish heritage (by Ancestry.com DNA match) and someone who has loved being in that other Celtic land, Scotland, the themes of O'Donohue's book resonate with me. Best is his final chapter on death as one's constant companion through life and on the continuing presence of the departed in our lives -- they are invisible but they are always there. I would recommend this book to anyone of any ethnicity who is struggling with the death of a close loved one. There are harmonies with Native American and West African cultural beliefs here.

This will be the one book you will want to keep on your bed side stand. John writes with poetic wisdom flowing from the tip of his pen. If the meander of your life has brought you to be reading this message. ... Buy this book and plan to visit Co Clare Ireland. Neither will disappoint.

Simply put, this beautiful writing gives you a different yet grounding way to look at life. Reading it is like taking a long walk with the author while he gently explains, "This is how the world works." I'm sorry he is no longer with us. I would have liked to hear him speak.

This is a book filled with profound insights on nature, friendship, emotional healing, aging and death. It is a book you will likely re-read many times to harvest the wisdom of John O'Donohue, a great Celtic Irish scholar, poet and philosopher. It has led me to a study of his other writings.

Bought to give to a gravely ill family member until I read it and realized that a whole lot of the book discussed death. Since the gift was too timely, I gave it to my mom. The writing is beautiful and full of amazing messages. Truly an inspiring read!

Bought 2 copies, one for me and one for my anam cara (soul friend). A seminal work on everything about the soul, life passages, longing and belonging, etc.

Everything was wonderful as to the delivery and the book as a product, but the translation took beautiful old English (middle English?), and translated it to modern speak. Julian of Norwich spoke of God as being "homely" as in family, kin, a loved one from home and reduced it to "familiar" or "friendly". It also had, perhaps a feminist angle as "men" was translated as "people". In doing so I believe the translators insistence that she was faithful to the intent was truthful as far as it goes, but it lost most of the charm, and warmth that a more readable translation, while keeping with as much of the original language would permit, would have conveyed.

"THE light is Charity, and the measuring of the light is done to us profitably by the wisdom of God. For neither is the light so large that we may see our blissful Day, nor is it shut from us; but it is such a light that we may live meedfully, with travail deserving the endless worship of God."Julian of Norwich was a true English mystic (c. 1342-1420). Her book is nothing more than the recapitulation of the Christian belief. That part of the above quote i. e. "it is such a light in which we may live meedfully (rewardingly), with travail deserving the endless worship of God." is just the saying of all of what I want to do in this life.I cannot praise Julian of Norwich enough for her English and also for how much as an example she has been in giving me direction to work, to live, and to heal. These are mainly what she says that might be worthwhile:"For our natural Will is to have God, and the Good Will of God is to have us.""God is all that is good, as to my sight, and the goodness that each thing hath, it is He.""the continual seeking of the Soul pleaseth God full greatly:""the cause while he suffereth (it to be so) is for [that] He will of His goodness make us the higher of Him in His bliss.""the more the soul seeth of God, the more it desireth Him by His grace.""He is the Head and we be His members. To which members the day and the time is unknown, when every passing woe and sorrow shall have an end, and the everlasting joy and bliss shall be fulfilled;""It is His office to save us: it is His worship to do [for] us, and it is His will [that] we know it.""Christ alone did all the works that belong to our salvation,"Thus we see the harmony of the interplaying of creation, fall, redemption, and salvation, ringing throughout.Probably one of the greatest books in my life.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, however, the newest edition of this beloved and wonderful text, Revelations of Divine Love by future Saint Julian of Norwich, ISBN 9781548722753 , as displayed in the "look inside" feature on the listing page, is, most unfortunately, an exceptionally cheap edition. To explain, the Warrack translation, by far the best in my opinion, has been printed time and again to various results. In this edition, existing as both paperback and digital, where the text in the digital version of this book is clean and crisp, the text in the physical, paperback edition, is exceptionally PALE. While the paper used to make this book appears, at first glance, to be of a decent quality, it is actually quite porous and a bit too thin, resulting in a great deal of bleed through, what readers often call "ghosting", such that you see a shadow of the text on the back of the paper cast very clearly through the page, as you are attempting to read it. Rather than use higher quality, thicker, denser paper, the publisher of this text chose to simply dial back the amount of ink they used in printing on the pages. And so, as to the end result, this text is very difficult to read. It is both pale, almost gray in appearance, and plagued by ghosting from the words printed on the back of the pages. I recommend selecting another edition of this wonderful text, if you actually wish to be able to read it. My search for the perfect edition continues. Where the layout of this volume is wonderful, the pale text and bleed through make it a failed attempt. They could fix it, using higher quality paper and slightly bolder text, even going up a font size, but the issue of the paper, governing the choice to use so little ink, would have to be dealt with first.Good luck in finding the right edition for you.

Everything the other reviewers have said is true, this is a wonderful story that will transport you straight out of the rat race and into nature. About a quarter way through, I was getting really curious about the snail, so I let my Kindle finger tap me to a video on YouTube that definitely 3D'd the snail for me. Just search for True Facts About Land Snails. Not your typical junior high science video! As the video and Ms. Bailey prove, those little guys really have a life. And so does she. Nice.

The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating4What I thought I was going to be reading:I read this at the same time I began listening to another similarly themed nature memoir, “H is for Hawk.” I have not read any other nature memoirs, so I don’t have much of a background for the genre itself. I do, however, tend to enjoy personal memoirs, especially ones with emotional turmoil and grief. I saw that this was a rather quick read, so I downloaded the e-book and started reading. What I actually read:The book focuses on one woman’s journey to some semblance of recovery after experiencing a debilitating international infection that left her almost all the way paralyzed. The narrator receives a pet snail from a friend while she is at home on bed rest. The chapters switch from the author’s observations of the snail to actual scientific explanations of snails as a species to stories of the author’s illness and recovery. The author finds comfort in her observations of the snail, as she fights through mental and physical isolation. What to expect:This memoir offers a nice balance of scientific description on snails and a personal narrative of the author’s life and recovery. This was a light read, with chapters being only a few pages long. I enjoyed learning about snails and their habits and how the author weaves her story into her observations of her companion snail.

This is a review of The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. This book is extremely near and dear to my heart. I have never felt more like I may have written this book in another life. It is the story that I wish that I had had the bravery to tell about my own dealings with my health and autonomic dysfunction. It is startlingly endearing and brings to light many questions about our narrator that never get answered, however- it is a satisfying non-fiction story about a woman struggling to survive an illness that is eating away at her body and soul. One day and friend visits her on her sickbed and gives her a momentous gift: a potted violet with a small brown garden snail hidden in it's soil. The author is shocked to find it and realizes that this small gastropod is the only pet she could dream of being able to take care of in this moment. She then proceeds to study The Snail in a way that is deeply meaningful and scholarly and, most of all, poetic. It is not a book of poetry, but more like a field guide or naturalists story about a small but mighty creature that has a surprisingly deep way of touching your heart. I would give this book 5 stars, but that may be because of personal bias, having found it extremely hard to find books about people like myself. I would recommend it to lovers of fiction and non-fiction alike. This tranquil tale is best enjoyed with a large cup of chamomile tea while sitting in the garden.-Rosey the Reader.

Well, I finished reading "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating" by Elizabeth Tova Bailey. All I can say is everyone should read this book, and EVERY page of it - from the quotes, to prologue, each chapter, epilogue and appendix. The book starts with one of my favorite quotes about loving your questions and living in the answers, even when they are unclear. The book then shares the intimate thoughts and observations of a woman finds friendship with a woodland snail as she is forced to face changes in her life and body when she gets a chronic debilitating disease. Those who live with a chronic illness will hear their own voice in the author's words and experiences, while all the readers can learn the every day lessons of this snail.Lessons in life about slowing down to see and hear the littlest of things because every moment matters. Lessons reminding us that every living creature is here for a reason, even a person who is broken by pain and illness and living life at a snail's pace. And lessons of change, as something we battle, adapt to, survive and actually live through.

Elisabeth Tova Bailey was struck down, quite literally, by a virus. She spent long months unable to even turn over in bed without exhausting herself. She spent those months in a room with a window she couldn't see out of and surrounded by plain white walls. Her only solace came from a friend who inexplicably picked up a woodland snail and brought it to Bailey in a pot of wild violets. She became fascinated by this small mollusk. She spent hours observing it, and led by questions arising from her observation, she spent more hours reading heavy tomes about molluscan biology. She even became the first person known to witness a snail tending its eggs. Eventually, she was well enough to convalesce at home, and she chose to have the snail returned to its natural home, too. She missed it.The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is Elisabeth Tova Bailey's account of her time with the snail (she never gave it a name) and her illness. She shares her observations, her musings, and a bit about how she felt. Rather than being the morbid account of a bed-bound victim, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a creature most of us would never notice. The sound? Bailey describes it as little teeth nibbling celery.

This is a book about underwater photography from one of the leaders in this area. I found this book clear, with a lot of amazing photos, and nice "case studies" on the behind the scenes of making some of these.I gave it only four stars, since I think that given the amount of underwater photography guides out there, a new book should decide whether it is aimed at novices, or at advanced shooters looking to hone their techniques. I felt that this book was undecisive on some. I felt it glossed on some points that are not obvious to novices, and as an advanced photographer, I learned from the book, but not as much as I expected.I usually recommend The Underwater Photographer as the goto book for learning underwater photography. As an advanced book, I felt that Winning Images with Any Underwater Camera: The essential guide to creating engaging photos taught me more.

I brought this book on my flight to Spain from NY and I can honestly say that this was worth every cent. One of the many reasons why I love this book is the way the author communicates with you and explains his process. This is not just a gallery book, it is very informative giving the reader every detail of his shooting process. After reading this it completely changed the way I viewed under water photography. It is not easy or cheap to do but if you are patient you're able to capture a fascinating world. I also like the fact that the author included his photo along with an example of where he was positioned as well and the settings he used for each shot. He also includes a summery at the end of each chapter if you wanted to quickly understand the main details. This is a great book a lot of important information for people who are looking to get better knowledge about shooting subjects underwater.

I am a recreational diver and an amateur photographer; I learned of this book on a dive trip and picked it up upon returning. The book's main audience is those with better equipment and/or greater aspirations than I however I have still enjoyed and gotten a lot from it.The chapters start with choosing photography equipment and preparing for a dive trip, then cover topics all the way through editing and archiving. Each page has a photo or graphic illustrating the matter at hand and all photos have descriptive captions with info on the camera model, lens, and settings used. The text is easy to read while conveying a lot of information and tips. In the middle of the book is a Guest Photographers Gallery for five other professionals, and these too have detailed captions.Between each chapter is a case study with a gorgeous photograph and in-depth study covering the backstory, settings considerations, a diagram of positioning, and more. All in all a great book with beautiful photos coupled with many details and tips on how to achieve them yourself. This has improved my abilities with mid-grade land cameras and even my basic underwater point-and-shoots, while tempting me to upgrade gear to advance my hobby.

Its on my top 3 underwater photography books.

Excellent book, well written and very informative. A must for starting as well as more experienced underwater photographers.

I have a close friend who is an amazing underwater photographer and for a couple of years she has bee trying to get me into the art. I have been hesitant because of my lack of knowledge on the subject. This book convinces me to get my underwater photography wings! The book is beautifully written, well composed with fantastic imagery and highly technical, yet easy to understand. If you want to expand your photography horizon or just want to improve your underwater photography this book is a MUST read.

Book Review: Underwater PhotographyReviewer background: Open water diver since 2004, hobbyist photographerThis book is great for hobbyist and enthusiast photographers who are already proficient divers(those who have buoyancy control even with added weight of camera/strobe set-up). Havingfamiliarity with basic skills of DSLR cameras is also helpful, but information related to those skillsis covered briefly in this book. The author begins by covering the necessary (as well as the not so necessary, but nice to have)gear when going on a dive trip where you plan to photograph what you see. He then covers basicsof photography before diving deeper (pun intended) into specifics of photography unique tounderwater photography. He frequently gives valuable tips on the flash/strobe direction as well ashow to position yourself to utilize the sun as backlighting. He devoted a chapter to both macroand wide angle shooting. He does touch on post processing, but this chapter is really more of anoverview rather than truly being a post processing tutorial for underwater images.I like that he included a few guest galleries and case studies. Perhaps my favorite part of the bookis the appendix where he includes several checklists to help you get prepared for this equipmentintensive endeavor. As someone who has taken thousands of photos while diving, I have continued to be unhappywith the quality of my work. After reading this book, I feel more prepared to capture what I intendto, and I have a newfound excitement to go out and put this knowledge to use.J. RupleArkansas Outdoor Photography Club.

I was given this book as a gift and found it to be extremely helpful. I am trying to make the jump from a point and shoot to a Sony A7s camera however much of the information would be useful to the novice point and shoot underwater photographer also. The appendix at the back is extremely helpful to set basic settings depending on what you are shooting. Had the pleasure of meeting and diving with the author in Lembeh Strait Indonesia recently, in person he is a fantastic resource, no wonder his book is the next best thing.

so-so. Hard to put together a good book like this. I live in a beautiful CT town, full of NY tourists and it's barely mentioned. Good, I guess, but shows how many good things were missed.

I bought this for my parents as they had recently moved from California to Conn. They love this book as it has allowed them to find some great bedroom communities nearby.A true review would be from someone who knows the area, but for outsiders this was a great purchase.

From Booklist

Pete the Cat, with his droopy eyes, doesn’t seem like the kind of dude to dig Valentine’s Day—and he’s not. But his feelings change quickly when he skateboards past his friend Callie, who tells him it’s her favorite holiday. After skating away, Pete thinks about how special each of his friends are and sets to making the perfect cards to celebrate them. Larry gets a valentine with a picture of a football; Trey gets a guitar; and John, a piano. Soon, he’s making a card for the school bus driver, the crossing guard, and the librarian. But there’s one bestie he’s forgot . . . Callie! This sweet book commemorates love between friends and gratitude for people who help you every day. Librarians, beware: this includes Valentine’s cards, stickers, and a poster, so, although it may not be right for all collections, some kid (or kids) is going to have fun with Pete this Valentine’s Day. As the title page says, I Meow You. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Ann Kelley

Pete the cat, too cool for school by Kimberly and James DeanAudio children's book Pete the cat. He has many choices of what to wear to school to be the cool guy.He asks others for their advice and they tell him their favorites. Silly tale and then after school he decides on what his favorites are...I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

We like the Pete the Cat books, which are part of Harper Collins' "My First Level, I Can Read!" series. Pete may not be as well known as Little Critter, Biscuit, Fancy Nancy, or the Berenstain Bears, but he has a kid-size groovy vibe that bests those slightly aging franchise bedrocks.Unlike some of the "I Can Read" books, the Pete books usually have a complete story, with a clear beginning, a couple of developments in the middle, and then a satisfying ending. I like that even in very early readers. What happens makes sense and the endings are satisfying. Each fully illustrated page has two sentences, running from four to seven words each. That's a nice length and a good and fair challenge for a little starting reader. The drawings fully support the text, and while they look a bit amateurish at first the characters are actually expressive and presented effectively. Many of the Pete books have a mild message, (be yourself, do your best). Here, Pete is choosing an outfit to wear to his first day at school. He takes advice from everyone and ends up way, way overdressed and rather silly looking. Finally, Pete takes off everything and puts on what he wants. Be yourself indeed. The message didn't strike me as terribly heavy-handed, but that's mostly because it was hidden under so many layers of silliness. The Pete books vary in their messageness, and this one does fall a bit to the obvious side of the balance. That said, it's fun and a bit ambitious, which is a nice touch for such an early reader. So, all in all, this is one of the few early readers books that strikes me as "set worthy" and we've been happy to collect them all over time. The paperback versions are particularly good value.

This book was disappointing. I bought it since my son is a major Pete The Cat fan but he wasnt interested in this book at all and frankly neither was I. There is no song, no asking questions, no fun story line. It was basically "hey its valentines day, watch me make cards for people, the end." The best part of the whole book was the valentines day cards inside. The poster was incredibly dumb and went in the trash pretty quickly. Its a picture of the cover of the book, and then its a picture of the book showing the cover. Pointless. I wouldn't recommend buying this unless you are only looking to get the valentines day cards.

This is a fun book, and Pete the Cat and his friend Callie are lots of fun. I like how they make Valentine cards for everyone, but I can't help but be bothered that Pete makes fun cards for all the boys in his class and then makes heart cards for all the girls. Thankfully my son can't read yet, so I help that part of the story be more friendly towards the girls.

My 5 year old loved Pete the Cat after I introduced him to the "white shoes" book. We then purchased the Easter and Halloween books, which he enjoyed as much as the original. This was purchased as a Valentine gift that he was thrilled to receive and wouldn't put it down. It is written exactly the same as the other holiday books, which was disappointing to me and is the reason for a four star rating instead of five stars. However, if your child likes Pete, he/she will enjoy reading this book, too.

This was purchased for a barely 3 year old to give to her parents for Valentine's Day. There is a poster and stickers so it was challenging to discourage her from looking at those items as we prepared it as a gift. Once she opens the gift with her parents, I think it will be fun for them to read the book, play with the stickers, and to hang up the poster. It is a nice read also for a toddler/small child.

Can I give 10 stars? This $6.39 book is worth a million! The story is really cute & the tear out cards, stickers & poster come perforated for easy removal.I ordered LLAMA LLAMA valentines & If you give a mouse... Valentine’s also. They are all sweet books but the kids really loved the activity included.

I did not expect the quality of this book to be as good for the price. Hard bound book and larger than a typical book. Roughty 9x9" I had purchased it for a small valentine's gift but for the price, I'm going to keep it and just get a bigger bag. Who doesn't love Pete the Cat?

While not a big fan of the Old McDonald song, I grew to like it via Pete's interpretation and colorful art work. I also get to like the many repetition and different animal sounds the book suggests, with its corky drawing and easy to read layout. Thanks Pete for re-introducing me to this tiring old song.

The Leading Indicators: A Short History of the Numbers That Rule Our World, by Zachary Karabell

From Booklist

Karabell traces the history of “leading indicators,” economic statistics including unemployment; inflation; trade; consumer sentiment and spending; the stock market; housing; and Gross Domestic Product (briefly, total market value of all goods and services provided within a country during one year). Leading indicators were designed with limited goals “that describe one reality known as ‘the economy’ but not all reality known as ‘the world we live in.’” In the first half of the twentieth century, leading indicators measured industrial nation-states, while now they measure service-driven developed economies and emerging world industrial economies exporting the goods of multinational companies. Karabell recommends crafting tailored indicators for specific needs using the explosion of information in this era of “Big Data.” Governments should follow the example of the U.S. Federal Reserve in using wide-ranging data and numbers to enhance analysis, many well-run companies develop their own indicators for operational decisions, small businesses need specific indicators for corporate strategy, and individuals using smartphones should access data for creating indicators relating to personal goals. Challenging book. --Mary Whaley

Review

“Zachary Karabell’s lively account, The Leading Indicators, is a terrific introduction to the range of statistics economists and governments use to address these questions.” (The New York Times)“Karabell offers an engaging account of the history of these indicators, and his explanation of their flaws is both readable and useful for non-economists trying to make sense of the barrage of numbers with which they're pelted on a regular basis.” (The Wall Street Journal)"[The Leading Indicators] demystifies a lot of current debates, explains its subject matter clearly and shows that the major published macroeconomic statistics are neither nonsense nor conspiracy. Most people could read this book with enjoyment and profit.” (Tyler Cowen The Washington Post)“How did we get to the era of Big Data? Karabell…mines little known tidbits in the history of economics to explain how individuals, companies, and countries came to rely on statistics like unemployment, inflation, and gross domestic product to describe the wealth of nations….In Karabell's hands economics is no longer ‘the dismal science.’ More storyteller than analyst here, he succeeds in livening up how ‘the economy’ came to be” (Publishers Weekly)“The Leading Indicators presents a potentially dry but important topic in an engaging manner, with wit and intelligence.” (The Cleveland Plain Dealer)“[A] lucid measurement of how the United States is faring. . . . Readers of this intelligent introduction to iconic economic indices will agree that Karabell makes an excellent case.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Our understanding of the economy is shaped by the numbers we use to measure it. In this engaging and subversive history, Zachary Karabell tells the story of how the indicators came to rule us, who invented them, what they actually tell us, and why we need to rethink all of them if we are to make sense of the world today.” (Justin Fox, Executive Editor, Harvard Business Review)“To any who treat the government’s economic data as if it were Holy Writ, Zachary Karabell’s book will come as a revelation. The Leading Indicators is the fast-paced story of the statistics that occupy far too large a part of our national consciousness. If you always suspected that the GDP was a snare and the CPI a delusion, Karabell’s narrative will tell you just how right you were.” (James Grant, Editor, Grant’s Interest Rate Observer)“We live in a world of Big Data, and we are led to believe that it contains the truth of our lives. But the numbers that we use to tally our wealth, our productivity, and our very worth as human beings are based not on any absolute truth, but on the shifting sands of politics, culture, and the personal quirks of our leaders. Zachary Karabell is a thinker who understands why economics isn't a hard science. The Leading Indicators is a much needed book about economic numbers that tells us how much—and how little—they ultimately mean.” (Rana Foroohar, Assistant Managing Editor, Time Magazine; Global Economic Analyst, CNN)“An enchanting primer on the origins and foibles of our economic numbers, marked with biting critique—and building toward the case for something new, different and adapted to the digital age.” (James K. Galbraith, Professor, UT-Austin, and author of Inequality and Instability)

The book's first 4-5 chapters are interesting economic history but it trails off into a more philosophical discussion of the best uses for the indicators. It also gets increasingly repetitive, as the author repeats he same examples to reinforce his point. For instance, unemployment only measures those looking for work and excludes those who aren't looking for work. Got it, so no need to repeat it at least three times.A good read but could have been better.

Very good book for anyone interested in what the economic indicators mean. I would highly recommend it to economics students, journalists, pundits, and politicians. If one becomes familiar with these statistics - GDP, unemployment rate, jobs created - it would not be possible candidates to make statements like Donald Trump's recent proclamation that the "true unemployment rate is around 25 percent". With some knowledge of what the statistics mean and how they are prepared, an informed citizenry could easily spot the demagoguery that pervades our political discourse. Buy this one!

Overall: I recommend this book to people who have an intermediate knowledge of economics or work in finance. This is one of the more thought-provoking books I've read in a while. Karabell does a good job explaining where and why important economic indicators (e.g. GDP and inflation) arose. How the idea of "the economy" is relatively new. He then goes on to explain whether they measure what we think they (ought) to measure. Each of these important indicators has its limits in describing our well-being, but at the same time that's not why they were created.I could have done without chapters 10 and the conclusion. But since it's not a terribly long book anyway, it wasn't too much of a waste of time.Overall, a recommend for econ nerds.

This is a bright, breezy and readable little volume that clearly shows how the sphere of human action that we now call "the economy" is largely a figment of the statistical imagination. It's reported on ad nauseam as though it is a real "thing", but it isn't; and fixation on its numerical measures has caused a deterioration in our thinking and in the quality of the lives we lead. These measures were devised as "indicators" to help us assess whether our policies were working or not; instead they have become a media fetish and a political stick with which to beat us into line. An excellent little volume; highly recommended!

The information in the book was very detailed and interesting, giving me a much improved understanding of "Leading Indicators" (e.g. unemployment rates, etc).. It was a little above my "pay grade" but well worth the effort.Thomas Roe Los Angeles.

An excellent summary of the collection of economic data and the subsequent application of statistics to the data. The author repeats his theme but it is worth repeating; the "leading indicators" that become the headline news do not and were never intended to fully describe a country, its citizens or its true (whatever that may be) economic well being.

The book lives up to its title: "The Leading Indicators: A Short History of the Numbers That Rule Our World". It covers the development and shortcomings of "headline" statistics such as gross domestic product, unemployment, and international trade. Readers will learn some eye-opening things, unless they already know the basics of what measures underlie these statistics and why many such statistics suffer from potentially misleading imperfections. For example, headline unemployment (U-3) doesn't include people who have given up looking for work; so if all workers lose their jobs and decide not to look for new jobs, the headline unemployment rate would fall to zero. The book does get a bit repetitive as it goes along, repeating its basic assertions over and over.Bottom line: If everyone read this book, we'd have a much more informed citizenry.

Stumbled on to this very excellent book about how these numbers have been established and how they have exceeded the importance we all have put on them. I recemmend this book to every political expert and to all citizens who await the next expectation awaited when the numbers are annouced. Do they really represent what we think they do?
